Unusual electronic structure of PrBa2Cu3O7

Chemical design of electronic and magnetic energy scales of tetravalent praseodymium materials

Lanthanides in the trivalent oxidation state are typically described using an ionic picture that leads to localized magnetic moments. The hierarchical energy scales associated with trivalent lanthanides produce desirable properties for e.g., molecular magnetism, quantum materials, and quantum transduction. Here, we show that this traditional ionic paradigm breaks down for praseodymium in the tetravalent oxidation state. Synthetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical tools deployed on several solid-state Pr4+-oxides uncover the unusual participation of 4f orbitals in bonding and the anomalous hybridization of the 4f1 configuration with ligand valence electrons, analogous to transition metals. The competition between crystal-field and spin-orbit-coupling interactions fundamentally transforms the spin-orbital magnetism of Pr4+, which departs from the Jeff = 1/2 limit and resembles that of high-valent actinides. Our results show that Pr4+ ions are in a class on their own, where the hierarchy of single-ion energy scales can be tailored to explore new correlated phenomena in quantum materials.

Effects of rare-earth magnetism on the superconducting upper critical field in infinite-layer nickelates

The search for superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates was motivated by analogy to the cuprates, and this perspective has framed much of the initial consideration of this material. However, a growing number of studies have highlighted the involvement of rare-earth orbitals; in that context, the consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting nickelates have been much debated. Here, we show notable differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These distinctions originate from the 4f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: They are absent for La³⁺, nonmagnetic for the Pr³⁺ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd³⁺ Kramer's doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be understood to arise from the magnetic contribution of the Nd³⁺ 4f moments. Such robust and tunable superconductivity suggests potential in future high-field applications.

Room-temperature valence transition in a strain-tuned perovskite oxide

Cobalt oxides have long been understood to display intriguing phenomena known as spin-state crossovers, where the cobalt ion spin changes vs. temperature, pressure, etc. A very different situation was recently uncovered in praseodymium-containing cobalt oxides, where a first-order coupled spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transition occurs, driven by a remarkable praseodymium valence transition. Such valence transitions, particularly when triggering spin-state and metal-insulator transitions, offer highly appealing functionality, but have thus far been confined to cryogenic temperatures in bulk materials (e.g., 90 K in Pr_1-xCa_xCoO₃). Here, we show that in thin films of the complex perovskite (Pr_1-yY_y)_1-xCa_xCoO_3-δ, heteroepitaxial strain tuning enables stabilization of valence-driven spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transitions to at least 291 K, i.e., around room temperature. The technological implications of this result are accompanied by fundamental prospects, as complete strain control of the electronic ground state is demonstrated, from ferromagnetic metal under tension to nonmagnetic insulator under compression, thereby exposing a potential novel quantum critical point.

Stabilization of three-dimensional charge order through interplanar orbital hybridization in PrxY1-xBa2Cu3O6+δ

The shape of 3d-orbitals often governs the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated transition metal oxides. In the superconducting cuprates, the planar confinement of the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${d}_{{x}^{2}-{y}^{2}}$$\end{document}dx2−y2 orbital dictates the two-dimensional nature of the unconventional superconductivity and a competing charge order. Achieving orbital-specific control of the electronic structure to allow coupling pathways across adjacent planes would enable direct assessment of the role of dimensionality in the intertwined orders. Using Cu L₃ and Pr M₅ resonant x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we report a highly correlated three-dimensional charge order in Pr-substituted YBa₂Cu₃O₇, where the Pr f-electrons create a direct orbital bridge between CuO₂ planes. With this we demonstrate that interplanar orbital engineering can be used to surgically control electronic phases in correlated oxides and other layered materials.

External perturbations can induce 3D charge order in cuprates, but the 3D correlation length is limited and the mechanism is not well understood. Ruiz et al. show that Pr substitution in YBa₂Cu₃O₇ enhances interplanar orbital coupling and stabilizes coherent 3D charge order that coexists with superconductivity.

Thermodynamic model of the coupled valence and spin state transition in cobaltates

A class of cobalt-based oxides exhibits a peculiar type of transition, entangling valence and spin state degrees of freedom of 4f and 3d elements. It constitutes one of the most spectacular illustrations of the interplay between charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in strongly correlated materials. In this work, we present a thermodynamic model capable to reproduce the main features of this transition. Our approach is based on the minimization of a free energy combining the contributions of two sublattices and the interaction between them. The coupling energies introduced in the model are related to well-known chemical pressure effects in the perovskite structure. The results of this model are compared to experimental data derived from x-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Magnetic ordering at anomalously high temperatures in selected lanthanides: what about Pr?

Recent experiments have given evidence that for elemental Nd, Tb, and Dy the application of sufficient pressure pushes their magnetic ordering temperatures to anomalously high values. Pr metal has a dhcp structure and is trivalent with the 4f² configuration. Its singlet ground state suppresses magnetic order from the 15 K anticipated from de Gennes scaling to 50 mK. Four-point electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on Pr for temperatures 1.5-295 K under pressures to 48 GPa. Although no clear evidence for magnetic order (or superconductivity) is observed above 1.5 K, the temperature dependence of the resistivity gives evidence that Pr may enter a dense Kondo state above 10 GPa.

Peculiarities of pseudogap in Y0.95Pr0.05Ba2Cu3O7-δ single crystals under pressure up to 1.7 GPa

The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to P = 1.7 GPa on the fluctuation conductivity σ'(T) and pseudogap ∆*(T) in Y0.95Pr0.05Ba2Cu3O7-δ single crystal with critical temperature Тс = 85.2 K (at P = 0) was investigated. The application of pressure leads to the increase in Tc with dTc/dP = +1.82 K∙GPa-1 while the resistance decreases as dlnρ(100 K)/dP = -(10.5 ± 0.2) %∙GPa-1. Regardless of the pressure, in the temperature interval from Tc to T0 (~88 K at P = 0) the behaviour of σ'(T) is well described by the Aslamazov - Larkin (AL - 3D) fluctuation theory, and above the T0 by the Lawrence - Doniach theory (LD). The Maki-Thompson (MT - 2D) fluctuation contribution is not observed. This indicates the presence of structural defects in the sample induced by Pr. Here it is determined for the first time that when the pressure is applied to the Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-δ single crystal, the pseudogap increases as dlnΔ*/dP = 0.17 GPa-1.

An efficiently tuned d-orbital occupation of IrO2 by doping with Cu for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction activity

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been regarded as a key half reaction for energy conversion technologies and requires high energy to create O[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) seem to be a promising and appealing solution to the challenge because of the diversity of their d-orbital states. We chose IrO2 as a model because it is universally accepted as a current state-of-the-art OER catalyst. In this study, copper-doped IrO2, particularly Cu0.3Ir0.7O δ , is shown to significantly improve the OER activity in acidic, neutral and basic solutions compared to un-doped IrO2. The substituted amount of Cu in IrO2 has a limit described by the Cu0.3Ir0.7O δ composition. We determined that the performance of Cu0.3Ir0.7O δ is due primarily to an increase in the Jahn-Teller effect in the CuO6 octahedra, and partially to oxygen defects in the lattice induced by the IrO6 octahedral geometric structure distortions, which enhance the lift degeneracy of the t2g and eg orbitals, making the d z 2 orbital partially occupied. This phenomenon efficiently reduces the difference between ΔG2 and ΔG3 in the free energy from the density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations and can yield a lower theoretical overpotential comparable to that of IrO2. The proposed method of doping with foreign elements to tune the electron occupation between the t2g and eg orbital states of Ir creates an opportunity for designing effective OER catalysts using the TMO groups.

Percolative nanostructure and superconductivity in the mixed crystalline cuprate Nd(1 - x)Pr(x)Ba2Cu3O(7 - δ)

The Pr-substituted cuprate Nd(1 - x)Pr(x)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7 - δ) (NdPr-123) has been investigated with particular attention on the relationship between the solid solution structure and the superconducting properties concerning the resistivity ρ and diamagnetic susceptibility χ. The compound NdPr-123 is regarded as a mixed crystalline solid solution that consists of unit-cells of Nd-123 and Pr-123, where a percolative nanostructure is constructed. The properties ρ and χ are largely characterized by such structural inhomogeneity. Several characteristic points (x(1), x(2), x(3)) are observed in χ as a function of x. Occurrence of these characteristic points is well explained in terms of a nonclassical percolation process, where the Nd-123 cell adjacent to the Pr-123 cells is converted into a different cell, thereby creating virtual percolation thresholds that appear as the characteristic points. The effective Pr-concentration x* is newly considered in reference to the cell-conversion. The concept of x* will provide clues for understanding various issues on the Pr-substituted cuprates. In addition, as an alternative case, a thoroughly different type of effective Pr-concentration has also been discussed in reference to the irregular substitution of Pr at Ba sites, which may happen to take place in RPr-123 (R = rare earth including Nd).

Charge density studies utilizing powder diffraction and MEM. Exploring of high Tc superconductors, C60 superconductors and manganites

The recent progress of the accurate charge density studies by the Maximum Entropy Method(MEM) utilizing X-ray powder diffraction is reviewed with some examples. Results for PrBCO (PrBa2Cu3O7-δ), YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7-δ), C60 superconductors (Rb2CsC60, K2RbC60, Na2RbC60) and the layered manganite, NdSr2Mn2O7, which is well known as colossal magnetoresistive (CMR)-related material, are given. For non-super conductor, PrBCO, it is found in the MEM charge density that there exist directional robes of the charge density from Pr atom toward the O atoms in the CuO2 conduction planes. On the other hand, for a very well known high Tc super conductor, YBCO, appreciable charge densities in the interatomic region around the Y atom is not recognized in the MEM charge density. The distinct difference of the charge densities between PrBCO and YBCO presents clear experimental evidence of the hybridization between Pr(4f)–O(2pπ) orbitals which supports the idea that the hole trapping by the hybridizes states suppresses the superconductivity in PrBCO. The MEM charge densities of the fullerene superconductors, Rb2CsC60, K2RbC60 and Na2RbC60, show distinct structural differences from that of non-superconductors, C60 and Li2CsC60, reflecting the superconducting properties. And the charge deficiencies of the doped metal atoms, which should be associated with charge transfer from the metal atoms to the C60 molecule seems to have strong correlation to the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. As the bigger the charge charge trnsfer, the higher the Tc. In the accurate MEM charge density of antiferromagnetic manganite, NdSr2Mn2O7,the direct imaging of spontaneous ordering of the dx 2-y 2 orbital indicating anisotropic exchange couplings between the local-spins on the Mn sites, which causes an unique layered-type spin order. The theoretical background of the MEM is also mentioned in some detail.

Charge freezing in the zigzag chain PrBa2Cu4O8 cuprate

We report nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on the chain Cu sites of PrBa2Cu4O8, a quasi-one-dimensional conductor with a nearly quarter-filled band. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows a pronounced peak near 100 K caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient. Similar peak was observed for the spin-echo decay rate 1/T2, however, at a different temperature near 50 K. These results and broadening of the NQR spectrum at low temperatures indicate that slow charge fluctuations of either electronic or ionic origin freeze gradually at low temperatures.

Three-dimensional fermi-liquid ground state in the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8)

The interchain resistivity of PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8) has been measured in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. Co-herent interchain transport at low temperatures is destroyed by a large magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO chains. Comparisons with quasiclassical transport theory provide strong experimental support for a three-dimensional Fermi-liquid ground state in PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8), despite extreme anisotropy in its electronic properties and the presence of strong electron correlations.

Coupled magnetic excitations in single crystal PrBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.2)

The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in PrBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.2) is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the Cu spin waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic system. This model enables values for the principal exchange constants to be determined. The results suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice. Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the interlayer Cu-Cu exchange is significantly lower than in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.2).

Localized 4f states and dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in PrO2

Neutron spectroscopic measurements of the magnetic excitations in PrO2 reveal (1) sharp peaks characteristic of transitions between levels of the 4f(1) configuration of Pr4+ split by the cubic crystal field, and (2) broad bands of scattering centered near 30 and 160 meV. We present a simple model based on a vibronic Hamiltonian that accounts for these contrasting features of the data. The analysis shows that 90%+/-10% of the Pr ions have a localized 4f(1) configuration and provides strong evidence for a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the gamma(8) electronic ground state.

Anisotropic optical spectra of PrBa2Cu4O8: possible Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid response of the quasi-one-dimensional metallic CuO double chains

The optical spectra of PrBa2Cu4O8 show large in-plane anisotropy. For the a polarization (E perpendicular chain), the spectrum is characterized by a gap of 1.4 eV, indicating the charge-transfer insulating nature of the CuO2 planes. For the metallic chain direction (E // b), the spectrum deviates from a simple Drude response; reflectivity R(b)(omega) shows a sharp edge at approximately 1 eV but it also shows a dip at approximately 15 meV, which splits the conductivity spectrum into two parts--a zero-energy mode with small weight and a pronounced 40 meV mode. These features are discussed in terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in a doped 1D Mott insulator and compared with 1D Bechgaard salts.

THE NEW GENERATION HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS

▪ Abstract  The layered perovskite cuprate materials are a unique class of superconductors with unusual normal-state and superconducting properties. The common physics to all these materials is that of the underlying CuO2 planes. This review provides a survey of and guide to their physical properties as it relates to the superconductivity of this interesting group of conducting oxides.
