Towards quantum telescopes: demonstration of a two-photon interferometer for precision astrometry

Classical optical interferometry requires maintaining live, phase-stable links between telescope stations. This requirement greatly adds to the cost of extending to long baseline separations and limits on baselines will in turn limit the achievable angular resolution. Here we describe a novel type of two-photon interferometer for astrometry, which uses photons from two separate sky sources and does not require an optical link between stations. Such techniques may make large increases in interferometric baselines practical, even by orders of magnitude, with a corresponding improvement in astrometric precision benefiting numerous fields in astrophysics. We tested a benchtop analogue version of the two-source interferometer and unambiguously observe correlated behavior in detections of photon pairs from two thermal light sources, in agreement with theoretical predictions. This work opens new possibilities in future astronomical measurements.

Single-shot measurement of quantum optical phase

Although the canonical phase of light, which is defined as the complement of photon number, has been described theoretically by a variety of distinct approaches, there have been no methods proposed for its measurement. Indeed doubts have been expressed about whether or not it is measurable. Here we show how it is possible, at least in principle, to perform a single-shot measurement of the canonical phase using beam splitters, mirrors, phase shifters, and photodetectors.

Measurements of the probability distribution of the phase difference between two quantum fields

We have measured the probability distribution of the phase difference Phi(2) - Phi(1) between two signal fields produced by parametric downconversion from two cascaded nonlinear crystals for several different values of the degree of mutual coherence. The experimental results are compared with theory, based on our operational approach to phase operators for quantum fields, and good agreement is obtained. These results are of interest because they constitute what we believe is the first experimental test of our phase theory for nonclassical states of light.
