Abrupt but continuous antiferromagnetic transition in nearly stoichiometric La2CuO4+ delta

Two-dimensional magnetic and superconducting phases in metal-insulator La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) superlattices measured by muon-spin rotation

We show, by means of low-energy muon-spin rotation measurements, that few-unit-cells thick La(2)CuO(4) layers synthesized digitally by molecular beam epitaxy are antiferromagnetically ordered. Below a thickness of about 5 CuO(2) layers the long-range ordered state breaks down, and a magnetic state appears with enhanced quantum fluctuations and a reduced spin stiffness. This magnetic state can exist in close proximity (few Å) to high-temperature superconducting layers, without transmitting supercurrents.

Electronic structure, magnetic ordering, and formation pathway of the transition metal oxide hydride LaSrCoO(3)H(0.7)

The role of the hydride anion in controlling the electronic properties of the transition metal oxide hydride LaSrCoO(3)H(0.7) is investigated theoretically by full potential DFT band structure calculation and experimentally by determination of the Neel temperature for three-dimensional magnetic ordering. The mechanism by which hydrogen is introduced into the solid is addressed by in situ X-ray diffraction studies of the formation of the oxide hydride, which reveal both a relationship between the microscopic growth of the observed oxide hydride order and the anisotropic broadening of the diffraction profile, and the existence of a range of intermediate compositions.

First time determination of the microscopic structure of a stripe phase: low temperature NMR in La(2)NiO(4.17)

The experimental observations of stripes in superconducting cuprates and insulating nickelates clearly show the modulation in charge and spin density. However, these have proven to be rather insensitive to the harmonic structure and (site or bond) ordering. Using (139)La NMR in La(2)NiO(4+delta) with delta = 0.17, we show that in the 1/3 hole doped nickelate below the freezing temperature the stripes are strongly solitonic and site ordered with Ni(3+) ions carrying S = 1/2 in the domain walls and Ni(2+) ions with S = 1 in the domains.

LiVGe2O6, an anomalous quasi-1D, S = 1 system, as revealed by NMR

We report the results of 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of LiVGe2O6, a quasi-one-dimensional spin S = 1 model system, at low temperatures. Our data, including NMR spectra and the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate T-11, indicate that a first-order phase transition occurs at T(c) approximately 23 K. The NMR response of LiVGe2O6 below T(c) suggests that the ordered phase is antiferromagnetic and has unusual features. Possible reasons for this unexpected behavior are discussed.
