Direct evidence of spin polarization oscillations in the Cu layers of Fe/Cu multilayers observed by NMR

Monolayer resolved oscillating hyperfine fields in epitaxial face-centered-tetragonal Co(001) films

Ultrahigh-quality thin fct-Co films grown on Cu(001) have been investigated by 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance. The influence of the spin-dependent electron scattering at the interfaces is observed for at least four Co atomic layers from the interface with monolayer resolution. An oscillatory effect on the Co hyperfine field with a period of several monolayers is measured, corresponding to the oscillating conduction electron polarization. The observation is exclusively possible in this system due to its very narrow resonance lines, corresponding to a virtually perfect Co structure.

Observation of the conduction electron spin polarization in the Ag spacer of a Fe/Fg/Fe trilayer

The spatially oscillating electron spin polarization in the Ag spacer of a 4 nm Fe/20 nmAg/4 nm Fe(001) epitaxial trilayer has been determined by means of low energy muon spin rotation. It oscillates with the same period as the interlayer exchange coupling, but shows a much weaker attenuation at large distances x from the interface. The measured magnetization profile from the inner 14 nm of the spacer is described by an oscillating polarization decaying as x(-0.8(1)). This unusual behavior may arise from a full confinement of electron states within the spacer.
