Collisions of doubly spin-polarized, ultracold 85Rb atoms

High sensitive trap loss spectroscopic detection of the lowest vibrational levels of ultracold molecules

We present a controllable three-dimensional fluorescence modulation technique for the high sensitive trap loss detection of ultracold molecules. The lowest vibrational levels (v = 0 and 1) of the pure long-range state 0(-)(g) (6S(1/2) + 6P(3/2)) of a cesium molecule are detected directly with high rotational resolution. Our technique proved to be a robust tool for effectively improving the detection sensitivity of trap loss spectroscopy.

Spectroscopic determination of the s-wave scattering lengths of 86Sr and 88Sr

We report the use of photoassociative spectroscopy to determine the ground-state s-wave scattering lengths for the main bosonic isotopes of strontium, 86Sr and 88Sr. Photoassociative transitions are driven with a laser red detuned by up to 1400 GHz from the 1S0-1P1 atomic resonance at 461 nm. A minimum in the transition amplitude for 86Sr at -494 +/- 5 GHz allows us to determine the scattering lengths 610a0 < a86 < 2300a0 for 86Sr and a much smaller value of -1a0 < a88 < 13a0 for 88Sr.

Giant helium dimers produced by photoassociation of ultracold metastable atoms

We produce giant, purely long-range helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is detuned close to the atomic 2(3)S1-2(3)P0 line and produces strong heating of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the five bound states belonging to a 0(+)(u) purely long-range potential well. These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about 150a(0) and outer turning points as large as 1150a(0).

Interisotope determination of ultracold rubidium interactions from three high-precision experiments

Combining the measured binding energies of four of the most weakly bound rovibrational levels of the 87Rb2 molecule with results of two other recent high-precision experiments, we obtain exceptionally strong constraints on the atomic interaction parameters in a highly model independent analysis. The comparison of (85)Rb and (87)Rb data, where the two isotopes are related by a mass scaling procedure, plays a crucial role. We predict scattering lengths, clock shifts, and Feshbach resonances with an unprecedented level of accuracy. Two of the Feshbach resonances occur at easily accessible magnetic fields in mixed-spin channels. One is related to a d-wave shape resonance.

Photoassociation of cold Ca atoms

We present the first measurement of a photoassociative spectrum of an alkaline earth element near the dissociation limit. The observed spectrum of Ca2 formed from cold atoms shows the regular vibrational series with the characteristic spacing of the 1/R3 asymptotic potential. The interpretation is in principle simplified compared to previous measurements on alkali metals by the nondegenerate ground state and the missing hyperfine structure of 40Ca. As an example, we derive the natural decay rate of the excited atomic 4p 1P1 state from the positions of the observed vibrational and rotational resonances with reduced uncertainty compared to previous measurements.

Photoassociation spectroscopy of cold He(2 3S) atoms

We observe vibrational states by photoassociation spectroscopy of cold He(2 3S) atoms. Photoassociation resonances are detected as peaks in the Penning ionization rate over a frequency range of 20 GHz below the atomic 2 3S1-2 3P2 transition frequency. We have observed three vibrational series, of which two can be identified. A possible mechanism to explain the observed increase of the Penning ionization rate is discussed.

Molecules in a bose-einstein condensate

State-selected rubidium-87 molecules were created at rest in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate of rubidium-87 atoms with coherent free-bound stimulated Raman transitions. The transition rate exhibited a resonance line shape with an extremely narrow width as small as 1.5 kilohertz. The precise shape and position of the resonance are sensitive to the mean-field interactions between the molecules and the atomic condensate. As a result, we were able to measure the molecule-condensate interactions. This method allows molecular binding energies to be determined with unprecedented accuracy and is of interest as a mechanism for the generation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate.

Photoassociation of Ultracold Atoms: A New Spectroscopic Technique

The new spectroscopic technique of photoassociation of ultracold atoms is reviewed, with an emphasis on connecting this area to traditional bound-state molecular spectroscopy. In particular, in contrast to photoassociative spectra at thermal energies, which are broad and of low information content, photoassociative spectra of ultracold atoms are high resolution, permitting observation of small vibrational and rotational spacings of long-range molecular levels near dissociation (typically with outer classical turning points >20 Å). The types of detection and theoretical analysis employed are illustrated, primarily using the example of 39K2. Future directions and applications of this field (e.g., to ultracold molecular formation) are also discussed. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Observation of Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute Atomic Vapor

A Bose-Einstein condensate was produced in a vapor of rubidium-87 atoms that was confined by magnetic fields and evaporatively cooled. The condensate fraction first appeared near a temperature of 170 nanokelvin and a number density of 2.5 x 10(12) per cubic centimeter and could be preserved for more than 15 seconds. Three primary signatures of Bose-Einstein condensation were seen. (i) On top of a broad thermal velocity distribution, a narrow peak appeared that was centered at zero velocity. (ii) The fraction of the atoms that were in this low-velocity peak increased abruptly as the sample temperature was lowered. (iii) The peak exhibited a nonthermal, anisotropic velocity distribution expected of the minimum-energy quantum state of the magnetic trap in contrast to the isotropic, thermal velocity distribution observed in the broad uncondensed fraction.
