Unified description of NN and YN interactions in a quark model with effective meson-exchange potentials

Ab initio description of p-shell hypernuclei

We present the first ab initio calculations for p-shell single-Λ hypernuclei. For the solution of the many-baryon problem, we develop two variants of the no-core shell model with explicit Λ and Σ(+),Σ(0),Σ(-) hyperons including Λ-Σ conversion, optionally supplemented by a similarity renormalization group transformation to accelerate model-space convergence. In addition to state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, we use leading-order chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions and a recent meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon interaction. We validate the approach for s-shell hypernuclei and apply it to p-shell hypernuclei, in particular to (Λ)(7)Li, (Λ)(9)Be, and (Λ)(13)C. We show that the chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions provide ground-state and excitation energies that generally agree with experiment within the cutoff dependence. At the same time we demonstrate that hypernuclear spectroscopy provides tight constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interactions.

Ab initio approach to s-shell hypernuclei 3lambdaH, 4lambdaH, 4lambdaHe, and 5lambdaHe with a lambdaN-sigmaN interaction

Variational calculations for s-shell hypernuclei are performed by explicitly including Sigma degrees of freedom. Four sets of YN interactions [SC97d(S), SC97e(S), SC97f(S), and SC89(S)] are used. The bound-state solution of 5lambdaHe is obtained and a large energy expectation value of the tensor lambdaN-sigmaN transition part is found. The internal energy of the 4He subsystem is strongly affected by the presence of a Lambda particle with the strong tensor lambdaN-sigmaN transition potential.

Hypernuclear fine structure in (9)(lambda)Be

With a germanium detector array (Hyperball), we observed two gamma-ray peaks corresponding to the two transitions (5/2(+)-->1/2(+) and 3/2(+)-->1/2(+)) in the (9)(Lambda)Be hypernucleus which was produced by the 9Be(K-,pi(-)) reaction. The energies of the gamma rays are 3029 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV and 3060 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV. The energy difference was measured to be 31.4(+2.5)(-3.6) keV, which indicates a very small Lambda-spin-dependent spin-orbit force between a Lambda and a nucleon. This is the smallest level splitting by far ever measured in a hypernucleus.

Observation of spin-orbit splitting in lambda single-particle states

The spin-orbit splitting of Lambda single-particle states in (13)(Lambda)C was measured. The 13C(K-,pi(-))(13)(Lambda)C reaction was used to excite both the 1/2(-) and 3/2(-) states simultaneously, which have predominantly 12C(0(+)) x p(Lambda) configuration. gamma rays from the states to the ground state were measured in coincidence with the pi(-)'s, by which ls splitting was found to be 152+/-54(stat)+/-36(syst) keV. The value is 20-30 times smaller than exhibited by the ls splitting in the nuclear shell model. This value gives us new insight into the YN interaction.

LambdaN spin-orbit splittings in (9)(Lambda)Be and (13)(Lambda)C studied with one-boson-exchange LambdaN interactions

Movitated by the on-going gamma-ray experiments at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory, we discuss the energy splittings of the 5/2(+)(1)-3/2(+)(1) doublet in (9)(Lambda)Be and the 3/2(-)(1)-1/2(-)(1) doublet in (13)(Lambda)C for which the LambdaN spin-orbit ( LS) and antisymmetric spin-orbit ( ALS) forces are relevant. In the microscopic 2alpha+Lambda ( 3alpha+Lambda) model for (9)(Lambda)Be ( (13)(Lambda)C), all the available Nijmegen one-boson-exchange (OBE) model LambdaN interactions lead to a wide range of splittings of 0.08-0.20 MeV in (9)(Lambda)Be and 0.39-0.96 MeV in (13)(Lambda)C. On the other hand, if we use information from quark-model LambdaN interactions which have generally large ALS force, the splittings become about half of the smallest OBE model prediction.
