First observation of ion acoustic waves produced by the langmuir decay instability

Physical regimes of electrostatic wave-wave nonlinear interactions generated by an electron beam propagating in a background plasma

Electron-beam plasma interaction has long been a topic of great interest. Despite the success of the quasilinear and weak turbulence theories, their validities are limited by the requirements of a sufficiently dense mode spectrum and a small wave amplitude. In this paper, we extensively study the collective processes of a mono-energetic electron beam emitted from a thermionic cathode propagating through a cold plasma by performing high-resolution two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and using analytical theories. We confirm that, during the initial stage of two-stream instability between the beam and background cold electrons, it is saturated due to the well-known wave-trapping mechanism. Further evolution occurs due to strong wave-wave nonlinear processes. We show that the beam-plasma interaction can be classified into four different physical regimes in the parameter space for the plasma and beam parameters. The differences between the regimes are analyzed in detail. We identify a new regime in the strong Langmuir turbulence featured by what we call electron modulational instability (EMI) that could create a local Langmuir wave packet growing faster than the ion plasma frequency. Ions do not have time to respond to EMI in the initial growing stage. On a longer timescale, the action of the ponderomotive force produces very strong ion density perturbations, and eventually, the beam-plasma wave interaction stops being resonant due to the strong ion density perturbations. Consequently, in this EMI regime, electron beam-plasma interaction occurs in a repetitive (intermittent) process. The beam electrons are strongly scattered by waves, and the Langmuir wave spectrum is significantly broadened, which in turn gives rise to strong heating of bulk electrons. Associated energy transfer from the beam to the background plasma electrons has been studied. A resulting kappa (κ) distribution and a wave-energy spectrum E^{2}(k)∼k^{-5} are observed in the strong turbulent regime.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering of backward stimulated Raman scattering

The rescattering of backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is found in the high electron density region by relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell simulation and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, where the BSRS is in the regime of absolute instability and dominates in all the scatterings. Both one dimension (1D) Vlasov simulation and two dimension (2D) PIC simulation have been given to verify that there exists SBS of BSRS in the regime of absolute instability for BSRS. The SBS of BSRS will be even stronger than forward stimulated Raman scattering (FSRS) and SBS in regime of absolute instability for BSRS. Thus, besides Langmuir decay instability and laser energy absorption, the SBS of BSRS is also an important saturation mechanism of BSRS in high electron density region.

Mini-Review of Intra-Stark X-ray Spectroscopy of Relativistic Laser–Plasma Interactions

Intra-Stark spectroscopy (ISS) is the spectroscopy within the quasi-static Stark profile of a spectral line. The present paper reviews the X-ray ISS-based studies recently advanced for the diagnostics of the relativistic laser–plasma interactions. By improving experiments performed on the Vulcan Petawatt (PW) laser facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), the simultaneous production of the Langmuir waves and of the ion acoustic turbulence at the surface of the relativistic critical density gave the first probe by ISS of the parametric decay instability (PDI) predicted by PIC simulations. The reliable reproducibility of the experimental signatures of PDI—i.e., the Langmuir-wave-induced dips—allowed measurements of the fields of the Langmuir and ion acoustic waves. The parallel theoretical study based on a rigorous condition of the dynamic resonance depending on the relative values of the ion acoustic and the Langmuir fields could explain the disappearance of the Langmuir dips as the Langmuir wave field increases. The ISS used for the diagnostic of the PDI process in relativistic laser–plasma interactions has reinforced the reliability of the spectral line shape while allowing for all broadening mechanisms. The results can be used for a better understanding of intense laser–plasma interactions and for laboratory modelling of physical processes in astrophysical objects.

Laser light triggers increased Raman amplification in the regime of nonlinear Landau damping

Stimulated Raman backscattering (SRS) has many unwanted effects in megajoule-scale inertially confined fusion (ICF) plasmas. Moreover, attempts to harness SRS to amplify short laser pulses through backward Raman amplification have achieved limited success. In high-temperature fusion plasmas, SRS usually occurs in a kinetic regime where the nonlinear response of the Langmuir wave to the laser drive and its host of complicating factors make it difficult to predict the degree of amplification that can be achieved under given experimental conditions. Here we present experimental evidence of reduced Landau damping with increasing Langmuir wave amplitude and determine its effects on Raman amplification. The threshold for trapping effects to influence the amplification is shown to be very low. Above threshold, the complex SRS dynamics results in increased amplification factors, which partly explains previous ICF experiments. These insights could aid the development of more efficient backward Raman amplification schemes in this regime.

Stimulated Raman scattering is one of the methods being explored to generate ultrahigh intensity short laser pulses. Depierreux et al. explore a new regime, also relevant to inertial confinement thermonuclear fusion, in which nonlinear kinetic response of a hot plasma enhances Raman amplification.

Exploring the saturation levels of stimulated Raman scattering in the absolute regime

This Letter reports new experimental results that evidence the transition between the absolute and convective growth of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Significant reflectivities were observed only when the instability grows in the absolute regime. In this case, saturation processes efficiently limit the SRS reflectivity that is shown to scale linearly with the laser intensity, and the electron density and temperature. Such a scaling agrees with the one established by T. Kolber et al. [Phys. Fluids B 5, 138 (1993)10.1063/1.860861] and B Bezzerides et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2569 (1993)10.1103/PhysRevLett.70.2569], from numerical simulations where the Raman saturation is due to the coupling of electron plasma waves with ion waves dynamics.

Observation of a transition from fluid to kinetic nonlinearities for langmuir waves driven by stimulated Raman backscatter

Thomson scattering is used to measure Langmuir waves (LW) driven by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a diffraction limited laser focal spot. For SRS at wave numbers klambda(D) less similar 0.29, where k is the LW number and lambda(D) is the Debye length, multiple waves are detected and are attributed to the Langmuir decay instability (LDI) driven by the primary LW. At klambda(D) greater similar 0.29, a single wave, frequency-broadened spectrum is observed. The transition from the fluid to the kinetic regime is qualitatively consistent with particle-in-cell simulations and crossing of the LDI amplitude threshold above that for LW self-focusing.

Langmuir decay instability cascade in laser-plasma experiments

Thomson scattering has been used to investigate the nonlinear evolution of electron plasma waves (EPWs) generated by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Two complementary diagnostics demonstrate the occurrence of the cascade of Langmuir decay instabilities (LDI). The EPW wave-number spectrum displays an asymmetric broadening towards small wave numbers, interpreted as a signature of the secondary EPWs produced in the LDI cascade. The number of cascade steps is in agreement with the broadening of the associated ion-acoustic-waves' spectra. The total energy transferred in the EPWs cascade is found to be either less than or of the same order of magnitude as the energy of the primary EPW.
