Controlling chaos by the system size

Despite the ubiquity of physical systems evolving on time-dependent spatial domains, understanding their regular and chaotic dynamics is still in a rudimentary state. While chaos implies that the system's behavior can be altered by small perturbations, this sensitivity proves to be useful for control purposes. Here we report on the experimental discovery of a novel mechanism to control chaos by time-variation of the system (spatial domain) size: depending upon the rate of the latter, the chaotic state may be completely prevented. Our experimental observations are disentangled with theoretical insights and numerical modeling, which also reveals the ability to control spatio-temporal chaos, thus making the findings relevant to a wide range of natural phenomena.

Dynamics of traveling waves in the transverse section of a laser

We analyze the general features of the formation and interaction of transverse traveling waves and the appearance of filamentation in broad area semiconductor lasers with current profiling. For small apertures, the emitted profile is symmetric consisting of two counterpropagating transverse traveling waves, both emanating from the center of the device. For larger apertures, the emission becomes asymmetric as one of the traveling waves expands to occupy an increased area while the other occupies the remaining, smaller spatial region. In both devices, the pattern becomes unstable at higher injection currents due to optical filamentation, although an intermediate state is present in the wider device whereby the dominant wave undergoes a Hopf bifurcation before filamentation occurs.

Time-resolved dynamics of two-dimensional transverse patterns in broad area lasers

We report the first direct experimental observation of the fast dynamics (nanosecond scale) of complex two-dimensional transverse patterns in broad area lasers. The laser emission bright peaks forming the transverse patterns are observed to be aperiodically flashing in time with different growing rates. These optical filaments do not move along the cross section during their lifetime, which is close to 2 ns. The experimental observations have also been reproduced by numerical integration of the Maxwell-Bloch equations.

From nearly tilted waves to cavity phase solitons in broad area lasers with squeezed vacuum

Phase domains and phase solitons in two-level amplifying media damped by a squeezed vacuum are predicted for the first time. Two different types of pattern formation are found depending on the relative value of the cavity detuning to the squeezed parameter: the usual one in lasers via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and a new one via pitchfork bifurcation.

Transition to space-time chaos in an optical loop with translational transport

We describe the transition from regular patterns to space-time chaos in an optical system with nonlocal feedback. The nonlocality introduced breaks the rotational symmetry of the system, resulting in a scenario for the transition from regular patterns to a disordered dynamics. The different regimes are characterized both in terms of spatial and temporal correlation functions, and by means of a Kahrunen-Loeve decomposition. This allows the determination of the structures participating in the dynamics, and an estimation of the active degrees of freedom versus the control parameter.

Cellular automaton model for the simulation of laser dynamics

The classical modeling approach for laser study relies on the differential equations. In this paper, a cellular automaton model is proposed as an alternative for the simulation of population dynamics. Even though the model is simplified it captures the essence of laser phenomenology: (i) there is a threshold pumping rate that depends inversely on the decaying lifetime of the atoms and the photons; and (ii) depending on these lifetimes and on the pumping rate, a constant or an oscillatory behavior can be observed. More complex behaviors such as spiking and pattern formation can also be studied with the cellular automaton model.

Experimental observation of traveling waves in the transverse section of a laser

The selection of a transverse traveling wave by an inhomogeneous pump profile has been experimentally observed in a class B laser structure. The laser structure consisted of a wide-aperture edge-emitting laser diode operating in pulsed mode to avoid thermal guiding effects. The injection current's profile was modified from the usual top-hat configuration to a Lorentzian-like profile by the inclusion of a 10-mum p-type expitaxial spreading layer. Spatial dependance of the far field on the near field was observed. The same behavior is also demonstrated numerically by use of Maxwell-Bloch equations for semiconductor lasers.
