Experimental evidence of the acousticlike character of the high frequency excitations in glasses

Sound damping in soft particle packings: the interplay between configurational disorder and inelasticity

We numerically investigate sound damping in disordered two-dimensional soft particle packings. We simulate evolution of standing waves of particle displacements and analyze time correlation functions of particle velocities and power spectra. We control the strength of inelastic interactions between the particles in contact to show how the inelasticity affects anomalous sound characteristics of disordered systems: Increasing the strength of inelastic interactions, we find that (i) sound softening vanishes and (ii) attenuation coefficients exhibit a transition from the Rayleigh law to quadratic growth. We also report (iii) how the Ioffe-Regel limit frequencies depend on the strength of inelasticity as useful information for experiments and applications of the sound in disordered media. Our findings suggest that sound damping in soft particle packings is determined by the interplay between elastic heterogeneities and inelasticity.

Long-wavelength structural anomalies in jammed systems

The structural properties of static, jammed packings of monodisperse spheres in the vicinity of the jamming transition are investigated using large-scale computer simulations. At small wave number k , we argue that the anomalous behavior in the static structure factor, S(k) approximately k , is consequential of an excess of low-frequency, collective excitations seen in the vibrational spectrum. This anomalous feature becomes more pronounced closest to the jamming transition, such that S(0)-->0 at the transition point. We introduce an appropriate dispersion relation that accounts for these phenomena that leads us to relate these structural features to characteristic length scales associated with the low-frequency vibrational modes of these systems. When the particles are frictional, this anomalous behavior is suppressed providing yet more evidence that the jamming transitions for frictional spheres lie at lower packing fractions than for frictionless spheres. These results suggest that the mechanical properties of jammed and glassy media may therefore be inferred from measurements of both the static and dynamical structure factors.

Evidence for a crossover in the frequency dependence of the acoustic attenuation in vitreous silica

We report measurements of the sound attenuation coefficient in vitreous silica, for sound waves of wavelength between 50 and 80 nm, performed with the new inelastic UV light scattering technique. These data indicate that in silica glass a crossover between a temperature-dependent (at low frequency) and a temperature-independent (at high frequency) acoustic attenuation mechanism occurs at Q approximately equal to 0.15 nm(-1). The absence of any signature in the static structure factor at this Q value suggests that the observed crossover should be associated with local elastic constant fluctuations.

Correlation of fragility of supercooled liquids with elastic properties of glasses

We present a detailed analysis of correlations between fragility and other parameters of glass-forming systems. The analysis shows the importance of the ratio between the instantaneous bulk and shear modulus of glass-forming systems, or their Poisson ratio, for structural alpha relaxation and fast dynamics. In particular, for simple glass formers, the bulk to shear modulus ratio in the glassy state correlates with fragility in the liquid state and is inversely proportional to the intensity of the boson peak. A simple relationship between the temperature dependence of the viscosity of liquids at high temperatures and near the glass transition is used to rationalize these correlations. We argue that the ratio of the moduli controls the high-temperature activation energy of the structural relaxation and in this way affects the fragility. The ratio also defines the amplitude of the structural relaxation (i.e., the nonergodicity parameter) and the latter influences the strength of the boson peak. These observations might explain the puzzling correlation observed between the fragility and fast dynamics in glass-forming systems.

Collective nature of the boson peak and universal transboson dynamics of glasses

Using probe molecules with resonant nuclei and nuclear inelastic scattering, we are able to measure the density of states exclusively for collective motions with a correlation length of more than approximately 20 A. Such spectra exhibit an excess of low-energy modes (boson peak). This peak behaves in the same way as that observed by conventional methods. This shows that a significant part of the modes constituting the boson peak is of collective character. At energies above the boson peak, the reduced density of states of the collective motions universally exhibits an exponential decrease.

Single-particle and collective dynamics of protein hydration water: a molecular dynamics study

We present an analysis based on molecular dynamics simulations of water single particle and collective density fluctuations in a protein crystal at 150 and 300 K. For the collective dynamics, the calculations predict the existence of two sound modes. The first one around 35 meV is highly dispersive and the second one around 9 meV is weakly dispersive in the k range studied here (0.5<k<4.2 A(-1)). We provide evidence that the boson peak around 4 meV in the single particle spectra arises from translational motion, is present in the coherent spectra, and is distinct from the two sound modes.

Equilibration times in numerical simulation of structural glasses: comparing parallel tempering and conventional molecular dynamics

Generation of equilibrium configurations is the major obstacle for numerical investigation of the slow dynamics in supercooled liquid states. The parallel tempering (PT) technique, originally proposed for the numerical equilibration of discrete spin-glass model configurations, has recently been applied in the study of supercooled structural glasses. We present an investigation of the ability of parallel tempering to properly sample the liquid configuration space at different temperatures, by mapping the PT dynamics into the dynamics of the closest local potential energy minima (inherent structures). Comparing the PT equilibration process with the standard molecular dynamics equilibration process we find that the PT does not increase the speed of equilibration of the (slow) configurational degrees of freedom.

Microscopic dynamics of molecular liquids and glasses: role of orientations and translation-rotation coupling

We investigate the dynamics of a fluid of dipolar hard spheres in its liquid and glassy phases, with emphasis on the microscopic time or frequency regime. This system shows rather different glass transition scenarios related to its rich equilibrium behavior, which ranges from a simple hard sphere fluid to long range ferroelectric orientational order. In the liquid phase close to the ideal glass transition line and in the glassy regime a medium range orientational order occurs leading to a softening of an orientational mode. To investigate the role of this mode we use the molecular mode-coupling equations to calculate the spectra straight phi"lm(q,omega) and chi"lm(q,omega). In the center of mass spectra straight phi"00(q,omega) and chi"00(q,omega) we found, besides a high frequency peak at omega(hf), a peak at omega(op), about one decade below omega(hf) x omega(op) has almost no q dependence and exhibits an "isotope" effect omega(op) proportional to I(-1/2), with I the moment of inertia. We give evidence that the existence of this peak is related to the occurrence of medium range orientational order. It is shown that some of these features also exist for schematic mode coupling models.
