Electron-impact ionization cross section measurements out of the 5(2)P excited state of rubidium

Electron collisions with laser cooled and trapped metastable helium atoms: total scattering cross sections

Absolute measurements of total scattering cross sections for low energy (5-70 eV) electrons by metastable helium (2(3)S) atoms are presented. The measurements are performed using a magneto-optical trap which is loaded from a laser-cooled, bright beam of slow He(2(3)S) atoms. The data are compared with predictions from convergent close coupling and R matrix with pseudostate calculations, and we find good agreement between experiment and theory.

Electron impact ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms below 2 eV

We have observed electron impact ionization of highly excited sodium Rydberg atoms in ns and nd states, n=35-51, below E=2 eV electron kinetic energy with energy resolution 0.25 eV. Measured absolute cross sections near 0 eV range from sigma(35d) approximately 7 x 10(-10) to sigma(50d) approximately 4 x 10(-9) cm(2). The energy dependence is consistent with that of widely used binary encounter approximation cross sections, and sigma(n) follows a power law in n. The measured cross sections are 14 to 24 times larger than theoretically predicted values. This enhancement may signal the effect of large polarizabilities of high Rydberg states not yet accounted for in ionization theories.

Benchmark nonperturbative calculations for the electron-impact ionization of Li(2s) and Li(2p)

Three independent nonperturbative calculations are reported for the electron-impact ionization of both the ground and first excited states of the neutral lithium atom. The time-dependent close-coupling, the R matrix with pseudostates, and the converged close-coupling methods yield total integral cross sections that are in very good agreement with each other, while perturbative distorted-wave calculations yield cross sections that are substantially higher. These nonperturbative calculations provide a benchmark for the continued development of electron-atom experimental methods designed to measure both ground and excited state ionization.
