Gd(0001): A semi-infinite three-dimensional heisenberg ferromagnet with ordinary surface transition

Boundary Critical Behavior of the Three-Dimensional Heisenberg Universality Class

We study the boundary critical behavior of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class, in the presence of a bidimensional surface. By means of high-precision Monte Carlo simulations of an improved lattice model, where leading bulk scaling corrections are suppressed, we prove the existence of a special phase transition, with unusual exponents, and of an extraordinary phase with logarithmically decaying correlations. These findings contrast with naïve arguments on the bulk-surface phase diagram, and allow us to explain some recent puzzling results on the boundary critical behavior of quantum spin models.

Self-induced spin glass state in elemental and crystalline neodymium

Spin glasses are a highly complex magnetic state of matter intricately linked to spin frustration and structural disorder. They exhibit no long-range order and exude aging phenomena, distinguishing them from quantum spin liquids. We report a previously unknown type of spin glass state, the spin-Q glass, observable in bulk-like crystalline metallic neodymium thick films. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy combined with ab initio calculations and atomistic spin-dynamics simulations, we visualized the variations in atomic-scale noncolinear order and its response to magnetic field and temperature. We quantified the aging phenomena relating the glassiness to crystalline symmetry and the energy landscape. This result not only resolves the long-standing debate of the magnetism of neodymium, but also suggests that glassiness may arise in other magnetic solids lacking extrinsic disorder.

Spin-dependent low-energy 4He+ ion scattering from nonmagnetic surfaces

We investigated electron-spin-polarized (4)He(+) ion scattering on various nonmagnetic surfaces at kinetic energies below 2 keV. It was observed that the scattered He(+) ion yield depends on the He(+) ion spin. We interpret this spin-dependent scattering in terms of the spin-orbit coupling that acts transiently on the He(+)1s electron spin in the He(+)-target binary collision. This interpretation qualitatively explains the relationship between the spin-dependent scattering and the scattering geometry, incident velocity, and magnetic field arrangement. This is the first study to report spin-orbit coupling caused by projectile electron spin in ion scattering.

Magnetic surface nanostructures

Recent trends in the emerging field of surface-supported magnetic nanostructures are reviewed. Current strategies for nanostructure synthesis are summarized, followed by a predominantly theoretical description of magnetic phenomena in surface magnetic structures and a review of experimental research in this field. Emphasis is on Fe- or Co-based nanostructures in various low-dimensional geometries, which are studied as model systems to explore the effects of dimensionality, atomic coordination, chemical bonds, alloying and, most importantly, interactions with the supporting substrate on the magnetism. This review also includes a discussion of closely related systems, such as 3d element impurities integrated into organic networks, surface-supported Fe-based molecular magnets, Kondo systems or 4d element nanostructures that exhibit emergent magnetism, thereby bridging the traditional areas of surface science, molecular physics and nanomagnetism.

Surface and bulk uniaxial to biaxial smectic-A transition in a bent core liquid crystal

A null transmission ellipsometer was employed to study the uniaxial to biaxial smectic-A phase transition of a bent core liquid crystal material. Free-standing films of thicknesses ranging from 5 molecular layers to more than 300 were prepared and studied. Critical exponents for both the surface and interior biaxiality were obtained. The results were discussed in the general framework of phase transition in lower dimensions.

Nonequilibrium magnetization dynamics of gadolinium studied by magnetic linear dichroism in time-resolved 4f core-level photoemission

The magnetic linear dichroism of the gadolinium 4f core level is studied in a time-resolved photoemission experiment employing laser pump- and synchrotron-radiation probe pulses. Upon optical excitation of the 5d6s valence electrons with femtosecond laser pulses, the magnetic order in the 4f spin system is reduced. Remarkably, the linear dichroism remains at 80% of the equilibrium contrast while the lattice temperature reaches the Curie temperature due to electron-phonon scattering. Contrasting itinerant ferromagnets, this shows that equilibration between the lattice and spin subsystems takes in Gd about 80 ps and is established in parallel with heat diffusion.

Finite temperature magnetism in Gd: evidence against a Stoner behavior

The temperature dependence of the rare-earth valence bands has been regarded as a realization of the Stoner behavior. The exchange splitting of the electronic states appears to scale as the magnetic order parameter for T<T(C) and to vanish at T = T(C). We report here a spin-resolved photoemission study on the evolution of Gd bulk bands for 0.5< or =T/T(C)< or=1. The spin-polarized spectral line shapes display a complex temperature dependence, which clearly contrasts with the interpretation of previous experimental results. The spin-resolved photoemission data demonstrate the inadequacy of the Stoner model to the description of magnetism in rare earths.
