Magnetic nanofluids (Ferrofluids): Recent advances, applications, challenges, and future directions

Impelled by the need to find solutions to new challenges of modern technologies new materials with unique properties are being explored. Among various new materials that emerged over the decades, magnetic fluids exhibiting interesting physiochemical properties (optical, thermal, magnetic, rheological, apparent density, etc.) under a magnetic stimulus have been at the forefront of research. In the initial phase, there has been a fervent scientific curiosity to understand the field-induced intriguing properties of such fluids but later a plethora of technological applications emerged. Magnetic nanofluid, popularly known as ferrofluid, is a colloidal suspension of fine magnetic nanoparticles, has been at the forefront of research because of its magnetically tunable physicochemical properties and applications. Due to their stimuli-responsive behaviour, they have been finding more applications in biology and other engineering disciplines in recent years. Therefore, a critical review of this topic highlighting the necessary background, the potential of this material for emerging technologies, and the latest developments is warranted. This review also provides a summary of various applications, along with the key challenges and future research directions. The first part of the review addresses the different types of magnetic fluids, the genesis of magnetic fluids, their synthesis methodologies, properties, and stabilization techniques are discussed in detail. The second part of the review highlights the applications of magnetic nanofluids and nanoemulsions (as model systems) in probing order-disorder transitions, scattering, diffraction, magnetically reconfigurable internal structures, molecular interaction, and weak forces between colloidal particles, conformational changes of macromolecules at interfaces and polymer-surfactant complexation at the oil-water interface. The last part of the review summarizes the interesting applications of magnetic fluids such as heat transfer, sensors (temperature, pH, urea detection, cations, defect detection sensors), tunable optical filters, removal of dyes, dynamic seals, magnetic hyperthermia-based cancer therapy and other biomedical applications. The applications of magnetic nanofluids in diverse disciplines are growing day by day, yet there are challenges in their practical adaptation as field-worthy or packaged products. This review provides a pedagogical description of magnetic fluids, with the necessary background, key concepts, physics, experimental protocols, design of experiments, challenges and future directions.

Electromagnetic energy within coated cylinders at oblique incidence and applications to graphene coatings

We address electromagnetic (EM) wave scattering by an infinite coated cylinder at an arbitrary incidence angle. The time-averaged EM energy stored inside the core-shell cylinder is analytically calculated for TM- and TE-polarized incident plane waves. An analytical expression relating the internal energy to the absorption cross section is derived. As an application, the EM energy inside dielectric cylinders coated with isotropic graphene layers epitaxially grown on silicon carbide (SiC) is studied. We find that off-resonance field enhancement occurs in graphene SiC microshells for TM-polarized terahertz waves, a phenomenon that can be explained in terms of Fano resonances.

Electromagnetic energy within single-resonance chiral metamaterial spheres

We derive an exact expression for the time-averaged electromagnetic (EM) energy inside a chiral dispersive sphere irradiated by a plane wave. The dispersion relations correspond to a chiral metamaterial consisting of uncoupled single-resonance helical resonators. Using a field decomposition scheme and a general expression for the EM energy density in bianisotropic media, we calculate the Lorenz-Mie solution for the internal fields in a medium that is simultaneously magnetic and chiral. We also obtain an explicit analytical relation between the internal EM energy and the absorption cross section. This result is applied to demonstrate that strong chirality leads to an off-resonance field enhancement within weakly absorbing spheres.

Energy transport velocity in bidispersed magnetic colloids

Study of energy transport velocity of light is an effective background for slow, fast, and diffuse light and exhibits the photonic property of the material. We report a theoretical analysis of magnetic field dependent resonant behavior in forward-backward anisotropy factor, light diffusion constant, and energy transport velocity for bidispersed magnetic colloids. A bidispersed magnetic colloid is composed of micrometer size magnetic spheres dispersed in a magnetic nanofluid consisting of magnetic nanoparticles in a nonmagnetic liquid carrier. Magnetic Mie resonances and reduction in energy transport velocity accounts for the possible delay (longer dwell time) by field dependent resonant light transport. This resonant behavior of light in bidispersed magnetic colloids suggests a novel magnetophotonic material.

Field-induced columnar transition of biocompatible magnetic colloids: An aging study by magnetotransmissivity

The field dependence of the optical transmission of tartrate-coated and polyaspartate-coated magnetite-based aqueous colloids was studied. The colloidal stock samples were diluted to prepare a series of samples containing different particle volume fractions ranging from 0.17% up to 1.52% and measured at distinct times after preparation (1, 30, 120, 240, and 1460 days). We show that the magneto-transmissivity behavior is mainly described by the rotation of linear chains, at the low-field range, whereas the analysis of the data provided the measurement of the average chain length. Results also reveal that the optical transmissivity has a minimum at a particular critical field, whose origin is related to the onset of columns of chains built from isolated particle chains, i.e., due to a columnar phase transition. We found the critical field reducing as the particle volume fraction increases and as the sample's aging time increases. To investigate the origin of this phenomenon we used phase condensation models and Mie's theory applied to a chain of spheres and to an infinite cylinder. Possible implications for magnetophotonic colloidal-based devices and biomedical applications were discussed.

Electromagnetic energy within a magnetic infinite cylinder and scattering properties for oblique incidence

We analytically calculate the time-averaged electromagnetic energy stored inside a nondispersive magnetic isotropic cylinder that is obliquely irradiated by an electromagnetic plane wave. An expression for the optical-absorption efficiency in terms of the magnetic internal coefficients is also obtained. In the low absorption limit, we derive a relation between the normalized internal energy and the optical-absorption efficiency that is not affected by the magnetism and the incidence angle. This relation, indeed, seems to be independent of the shape of the scatterer. This universal aspect of the internal energy is connected to the transport velocity and consequently to the diffusion coefficient in the multiple scattering regime. Magnetism favors high internal energy for low size parameter cylinders, which leads to a low diffusion coefficient for electromagnetic propagation in 2D random media.

Electromagnetic energy within magnetic spheres

Consider that an incident plane wave is scattered by a homogeneous and isotropic magnetic sphere of finite radius. We determine, by means of the rigorous Mie theory, an exact expression for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within this particle. For magnetic scatterers, we find that the value of the average internal energy in the resonance picks is much larger than the one associated with a scatterer with the same nonmagnetic medium properties. This result is valid even, and especially, for low size parameter values. Expressions for the contributions of the radial and angular field components to the internal energy are determined. For the analytical study of the weak absorption regime, we derive an exact expression for the absorption cross section in terms of the magnetic Mie internal coefficients. We stress that, although the electromagnetic scattering by particles is a well-documented topic, almost no attention has been devoted to magnetic scatterers. Our aim is to provide some new analytical results, which can be used for magnetic particles, and emphasize the unusual properties of the magnetic scatters, which could be important in some applications.

Magnetically induced Mie resonance in a magnetic sphere suspended in a ferrofluid

Mie scattering functions for a magnetizable sphere whose relative refractive index is dependent on the externally applied magnetic field are computed for four different sizes of the sphere. It is found that Mie resonances are observed at certain critical fields when the incident light is polarized with its electric vector perpendicular to the applied field. The width of resonance as well as the critical fields shifts with the increase in size of the spheres. Results are compared with the experimentally observed scattering effects in a dispersion of magnetite spheres in a ferrofluid.

Light scattering in a magnetically polarizable nanoparticle suspension

We investigate magnetic-field-induced changes on transmitted light intensity in a magnetic disordered phase of iron oxide nanoparticle suspension. We observe a dramatic decrease in the transmitted light intensity at a critical magnetic field. The critical magnetic field follows power-law dependence with the volume fraction of the nanoparticles suggesting a disorder-order structural transition. The light intensity recovers fully when the magnetic field is switched off. We discuss the possible reasons for the reduction in the light intensity under the influence of magnetic field. Among the various mechanisms such as Kerker's condition for zero forward scattering, Faraday effect, Christiansen effect, photoinduced refractive index mismatch between the two components of the dispersion, etc., the resonances within the magnetic scatterers appear to be the plausible cause for the extinction of light. The circular pattern observed on a screen placed perpendicular to the incident beam confirms the formation of rodlike structures along the direction of propagation of the light.

Experimental evidence of zero forward scattering by magnetic spheres

Magnetically induced diffraction patterns by micron sized magnetic spheres dispersed in a ferrofluid disappear at a certain critical magnetic field. This critical field is found to depend on the concentration of the ferrofluid and on the volume of the magnetic spheres. We attribute this effect to the zero forward scattering by magnetic spheres as predicted by Kerker, Wang, and Giles [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 73, 765 (1983)]. We suggest that such a dispersion can be used to study the optical analogues of localization of electrons in condensed matter, the Hall effect, and the anisotropic diffusion, etc. The combination of the micron sized magnetic spheres and the ferrofluid will also be useful to design magnetically tunable photonic devices.
