Multiple-charge-quanta shot noise in superconducting atomic contacts

Why Shot Noise Does Not Generally Detect Pairing in Mesoscopic Superconducting Tunnel Junctions

The shot noise in tunneling experiments reflects the Poissonian nature of the tunneling process. The shot-noise power is proportional to both the magnitude of the current and the effective charge of the carrier. Shot-noise spectroscopy thus enables us, in principle, to determine the effective charge q of the charge carriers of that tunnel. This can be used to detect electron pairing in superconductors: In the normal state, the noise corresponds to single electron tunneling (q=1e), while in the paired state, the noise corresponds to q=2e. Here, we use a newly developed amplifier to reveal that in typical mesoscopic superconducting junctions, the shot noise does not reflect the signatures of pairing and instead stays at a level corresponding to q=1e. We show that transparency can control the shot noise, and this q=1e is due to the large number of tunneling channels with each having very low transparency. Our results indicate that in typical mesoscopic superconducting junctions, one should expect q=1e noise and lead to design guidelines for junctions that allow the detection of electron pairing.

Superfluid Signatures in a Dissipative Quantum Point Contact

We measure superfluid transport of strongly interacting fermionic lithium atoms through a quantum point contact with local, spin-dependent particle loss. We observe that the characteristic non-Ohmic superfluid transport enabled by high-order multiple Andreev reflections transitions into an excess Ohmic current as the dissipation strength exceeds the superfluid gap. We develop a model with mean-field reservoirs connected via tunneling to a dissipative site. Our calculations in the Keldysh formalism reproduce the observed nonequilibrium particle current, yet do not fully explain the observed loss rate or spin current.

Photon-Assisted Tunneling of High-Order Multiple Andreev Reflections in Epitaxial Nanowire Josephson Junctions

Semiconductor/superconductor hybrids exhibit a range of phenomena that can be exploited for the study of novel physics and the development of new technologies. Understanding the origin of the energy spectrum of such hybrids is therefore a crucial goal. Here, we study Josephson junctions defined by shadow epitaxy on InAsSb/Al nanowires. The devices exhibit gate-tunable supercurrents at low temperatures and multiple Andreev reflections (MARs) at finite voltage bias. Under microwave irradiation, photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) of MARs produces characteristic oscillating sidebands at quantized energies, which depend on MAR order, n, in agreement with a recently suggested modification of the classical Tien-Gordon equation. The scaling of the quantized energy spacings with microwave frequency provides independent confirmation of the effective charge, ne, transferred by the nth-order tunneling process. The measurements suggest PAT as a powerful method for assigning the origin of low-energy spectral features in hybrid Josephson devices.

Signatures of Interactions in the Andreev Spectrum of Nanowire Josephson Junctions

We performed microwave spectroscopy of an InAs nanowire between superconducting contacts implementing a finite-length, multichannel Josephson weak link. Certain features in the spectra, such as the splitting by spin-orbit interactions of the transition lines among Andreev states, have been already understood in terms of noninteracting models. However, we identify here additional transitions, which evidence the presence of Coulomb interactions. By combining experimental measurements and model calculations, we reach a qualitative understanding of these very rich Andreev spectra.

Shot-noise measurements of single-atom junctions using a scanning tunneling microscope

Current fluctuations related to the discreteness of charge passing through small constrictions are termed shot noise. This unavoidable noise provides both advantages-being a direct measurement of the transmitted particles' charge-and disadvantages-a main noise source in nanoscale devices operating at low temperature. While better understanding of shot noise is desired, the technical difficulties in measuring it result in relatively few experimental works, especially in single-atom structures. Here, we describe a local shot-noise measurement apparatus and demonstrate successful noise measurements through single-atom junctions. Our apparatus, based on a scanning tunneling microscope, operates at liquid helium temperatures. It includes a broadband commercial amplifier mounted in close proximity to the tunnel junction, thus reducing both the thermal noise and input capacitance that limit traditional noise measurements. The full capabilities of the microscope are maintained in the modified system, and a quick transition between different measurement modes is possible.

Transport of pseudothermal photons through an anharmonic cavity

Under nonequilibrium conditions, quantum optical systems reveal unusual properties that might be distinct from those in condensed matter. The fundamental reason is that photonic eigenstates can have arbitrary occupation numbers, whereas in electronic systems these are limited by the Pauli principle. Here, we address the steady-state transport of pseudothermal photons between two waveguides connected through a cavity with Bose–Hubbard interaction between photons. One of the waveguides is subjected to a broadband incoherent pumping. We predict a continuous transition between the regimes of Lorentzian and Gaussian chaotic light emitted by the cavity. The rich variety of nonequilibrium transport regimes is revealed by the zero-frequency noise. There are three limiting cases, in which the noise-current relation is characterized by a power-law, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$S\propto J^\gamma$$\end{document}S∝Jγ. The Lorentzian light corresponds to Breit-Wigner-like transmission and \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\gamma =2$$\end{document}γ=2. The Gaussian regime corresponds to many-body transport with the shot noise (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\gamma =1$$\end{document}γ=1) at large currents; at low currents, however, we find an unconventional exponent \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\gamma =3/2$$\end{document}γ=3/2 indicating a nontrivial interplay between multi-photon transitions and incoherent pumping. The nonperturbative solution for photon dephasing is obtained in the framework of the Keldysh field theory and Caldeira-Leggett effective action. These findings might be relevant for experiments on photon blockade in superconducting qubits, thermal states transfer, and photon statistics probing.

Suppression of shot noise in a spin-orbit coupled quantum dot

We study theoretically the transport properties of electrons in a quantum dot system with spin-orbit coupling. By using the quantum master equation approach, the shot noise and skewness of the transport electrons are calculated. We obtain super-Poisson noise behaviour by investigating the full counting statistics of the transport system. We discover super-Poisson behaviour is more obvious with the spin polarization increasing. More importantly, we discover the suppression of shot noise induced by spin-orbit coupling. The value of shot noise is gradually decreasing when spin-orbit coupling strength increases.

A non-oxidizing fabrication method for lithographic break junctions of sensitive metals

Electrochemically active metals offer advanced functionalities with respect to the well-established gold electrode arrangements in various electronic transport experiments on atomic scale objects. Such functionalities can arise from stronger interactions with the leads which provide better coupling to specific molecules and may also facilitate metallic filament formation in atomic switches. However, the higher reactivity of the electrode metal also imposes challenges in the fabrication and reliability of nanometer scale platforms, limiting the number of reported applications. Here we present a high-yield lithographic fabrication procedure suitable to extend the experimental toolkit with mechanically controllable break junctions of oxygen sensitive metallic electrodes. We fabricate and characterize silver break junctions exhibiting single-atomic conductance and superior mechanical and electrical stability at room temperature. As a proof-of-principle application, we demonstrate resistive switching between metastable few-atom configurations at finite voltage bias.

Dynamical Coulomb Blockade as a Local Probe for Quantum Transport

Quantum fluctuations are imprinted with valuable information about transport processes. Experimental access to this information is possible, but challenging. We introduce the dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB) as a local probe for fluctuations in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and show that it provides information about the conduction channels. In agreement with theoretical predictions, we find that the DCB disappears in a single-channel junction with increasing transmission following the Fano factor, analogous to what happens with shot noise. Furthermore we demonstrate local differences in the DCB expected from changes in the conduction channel configuration. Our experimental results are complemented by ab initio transport calculations that elucidate the microscopic nature of the conduction channels in our atomic-scale contacts. We conclude that probing the DCB by STM provides a technique complementary to shot noise measurements for locally resolving quantum transport characteristics.

Breaking the Quantum PIN Code of Atomic Synapses

Atomic synapses represent a special class of memristors whose operation relies on the formation of metallic nanofilaments bridging two electrodes across an insulator. Due to the magnifying effect of this narrowest cross section on the device conductance, a nanometer-scale displacement of a few atoms grants access to various resistive states at ultimately low energy costs, satisfying the fundamental requirements of neuromorphic computing hardware. However, device engineering lacks the complete quantum characterization of such filamentary conductance. Here we analyze multiple Andreev reflection processes emerging at the filament terminals when superconducting electrodes are utilized. Thereby, the quantum PIN code, i.e., the transmission probabilities of each individual conduction channel contributing to the conductance of the nanojunctions, is revealed. Our measurements on Nb₂O₅ resistive switching junctions provide profound experimental evidence that the onset of the high conductance ON state is manifested via the formation of truly atomic-sized metallic filaments.

Electron pairing in the pseudogap state revealed by shot noise in copper oxide junctions

In the quest to understand high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, debate has been focused on the pseudogap-a partial energy gap that opens over portions of the Fermi surface in the 'normal' state above the bulk critical temperature¹. The pseudogap has been attributed to precursor superconductivity, to the existence of preformed pairs and to competing orders such as charge-density waves^1-4. A direct determination of the charge of carriers as a function of temperature and bias could help resolve among these alternatives. Here we report measurements of the shot noise of tunnelling current in high-quality La_2-xSr_xCuO₄/La₂CuO₄/La_2-xSr_xCuO₄ (LSCO/LCO/LSCO) heterostructures fabricated using atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy at several doping levels. The data delineate three distinct regions in the bias voltage-temperature space. Well outside the superconducting gap region, the shot noise agrees quantitatively with independent tunnelling of individual charge carriers. Deep within the superconducting gap, shot noise is greatly enhanced, reminiscent of multiple Andreev reflections^5-7. Above the critical temperature and extending to biases much larger than the superconducting gap, there is a broad region in which the noise substantially exceeds theoretical expectations for single-charge tunnelling, indicating pairing of charge carriers. These pairs are detectable deep into the pseudogap region of temperature and bias. The presence of these pairs constrains current models of the pseudogap and broken symmetry states, while phase fluctuations limit the domain of superconductivity.

Enhanced Shot Noise of Multiple Andreev Reflections in a Carbon Nanotube Quantum Dot in SU(2) and SU(4) Kondo regimes

The sensitivity of shot noise to the interplay between Kondo correlations and superconductivity is investigated in a carbon nanotube quantum dot connected to superconducting electrodes. Depending on the gate voltage, the SU(2) and SU(4) Kondo unitary regimes can be clearly identified. We observe enhancement of the shot noise via the Fano factor in the superconducting state. Its divergence at low bias voltage, which is more pronounced in the SU(4) regime than in the SU(2) one, is larger than what is expected from proliferation of multiple Andreev reflections predicted by the existing theories. Our result suggests that the Kondo effect is responsible for this strong enhancement.

Anomalous Nonlinear Shot Noise at High Voltage Bias

Since the work of Walter Schottky, it is known that the shot-noise power for a completely uncorrelated set of electrons increases linearly with the time-averaged current. At zero temperature and in the absence of inelastic scattering, the linearity relation between noise power and average current is quite robust, in many cases even for correlated electrons. Through high-bias shot-noise measurements on single Au atom point contacts, we find that the noise power in the high-bias regime shows highly nonlinear behavior even leading to a decrease in shot noise with voltage. We explain this nonlinearity using a model based on quantum interference of electron waves with varying path difference due to scattering from randomly distributed defect sites in the leads, which makes the transmission probability for these electrons both energy and voltage dependent.

Nonlocal supercurrent of quartets in a three-terminal Josephson junction

A novel nonlocal supercurrent, carried by quartets, each consisting of four electrons, is expected to appear in a voltage-biased three-terminal Josephson junction. This supercurrent results from a nonlocal Andreev bound state (ABS), formed among three superconducting terminals. While in a two-terminal Josephson junction the usual ABS, and thus the dc Josephson current, exists only in equilibrium, the ABS, which gives rise to the quartet supercurrent, persists in the nonlinear regime. In this work, we report such resonance in a highly coherent three-terminal Josephson junction made in an InAs nanowire in proximity to an aluminum superconductor. In addition to nonlocal conductance measurements, cross-correlation measurements of current fluctuations provided a distinctive signature of the quartet supercurrent. Multiple device geometries had been tested, allowing us to rule out competing mechanisms and to establish the underlying microscopic origin of this coherent nondissipative current.

Fast and accurate shot noise measurements on atomic-size junctions in the MHz regime

Shot noise measurements on atomic and molecular junctions provide rich information about the quantum transport properties of the junctions and on the inelastic scattering events taking place in the process. Dissipation at the nanoscale, a problem of central interest in nano-electronics, can be studied in its most explicit and simplified form. Here, we describe a measurement technique that permits extending previous noise measurements to a much higher frequency range, and to much higher bias voltage range, while maintaining a high accuracy in noise and conductance. We also demonstrate the advantages of having access to the spectral information for diagnostics.

Super-Poissonian Shot Noise of Squeezed-Magnon Mediated Spin Transport

The magnetization of a ferromagnet (F) driven out of equilibrium injects pure spin current into an adjacent conductor (N). Such F|N bilayers have become basic building blocks in a wide variety of spin-based devices. We evaluate the shot noise of the spin current traversing the F|N interface when F is subjected to a coherent microwave drive. We find that the noise spectrum is frequency independent up to the drive frequency, and increases linearly with frequency thereafter. The low frequency noise indicates super-Poissonian spin transfer, which results from quasiparticles with effective spin ℏ^{*}=ℏ(1+δ). For typical ferromagnetic thin films, δ∼1 is related to the dipolar interaction-mediated squeezing of F eigenmodes.

Charge of a quasiparticle in a superconductor

Nonlinear charge transport in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions has a unique signature in the shuttled charge quantum between the two superconductors. In the zero-bias limit Cooper pairs, each with twice the electron charge, carry the Josephson current. An applied bias VSD leads to multiple Andreev reflections (MAR), which in the limit of weak tunneling probability should lead to integer multiples of the electron charge ne traversing the junction, with n integer larger than 2Δ/eVSD and Δ the superconducting order parameter. Exceptionally, just above the gap eVSD ≥ 2Δ, with Andreev reflections suppressed, one would expect the current to be carried by partitioned quasiparticles, each with energy-dependent charge, being a superposition of an electron and a hole. Using shot-noise measurements in an SIS junction induced in an InAs nanowire (with noise proportional to the partitioned charge), we first observed quantization of the partitioned charge q = e*/e = n, with n = 1-4, thus reaffirming the validity of our charge interpretation. Concentrating next on the bias region eVSD ~ 2Δ, we found a reproducible and clear dip in the extracted charge to q ~ 0.6, which, after excluding other possibilities, we attribute to the partitioned quasiparticle charge. Such dip is supported by numerical simulations of our SIS structure.

Shot noise as a probe of spin-polarized transport through single atoms

Single atoms on Au(111) surfaces have been contacted with the Au tip of a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The shot noise of the current through these contacts has been measured up to frequencies of 120 kHz and Fano factors have been determined to characterize the transport channels. The noise at Fe and Co atoms, the latter displaying a Kondo effect, indicates spin-polarized transport through a single channel. Transport calculations reproduce this observation.

Superconducting atomic contacts inductively coupled to a microwave resonator

We describe and characterize a microwave setup to probe the Andreev levels of a superconducting atomic contact. The contact is part of a superconducting loop inductively coupled to a superconducting coplanar resonator. By monitoring the resonator reflection coefficient close to its resonance frequency as a function of both flux through the loop and frequency of a second tone we perform spectroscopy of the transition between two Andreev levels of highly transmitting channels of the contact. The results indicate how to perform coherent manipulation of these states.

Probing the orbital origin of conductance oscillations in atomic chains

We investigate periodical oscillations in the conductance of suspended Au and Pt atomic chains during elongation under mechanical stress. Analysis of conductance and shot noise measurements reveals that the oscillations are mainly related to variations in a specific conduction channel as the chain undergoes transitions between zigzag and linear atomic configurations. The calculated local electronic structure shows that the oscillations originate from varying degrees of hybridization between the atomic orbitals along the chain as a function of the zigzag angle. These variations are highly dependent on the directionally and symmetry of the relevant orbitals, in agreement with the order-of-magnitude difference between the Pt and Au oscillation amplitudes observed in experiment. Our results demonstrate that the sensitivity of conductance to structural variations can be controlled by designing atomic-scale conductors in view of the directional interactions between atomic orbitals.

Enhanced noise at high bias in atomic-scale Au break junctions

Heating in nanoscale systems driven out of equilibrium is of fundamental importance, has ramifications for technological applications, and is a challenge to characterize experimentally. Prior experiments using nanoscale junctions have largely focused on heating of ionic degrees of freedom, while heating of the electrons has been mostly neglected. We report measurements in atomic-scale Au break junctions, in which the bias-driven component of the current noise is used as a probe of the electronic distribution. At low biases (<150 mV) the noise is consistent with expectations of shot noise at a fixed electronic temperature. At higher biases, a nonlinear dependence of the noise power is observed. We consider candidate mechanisms for this increase, including flicker noise (due to ionic motion), heating of the bulk electrodes, nonequilibrium electron-phonon effects, and local heating of the electronic distribution impinging on the ballistic junction. We find that flicker noise and bulk heating are quantitatively unlikely to explain the observations. We discuss the implications of these observations for other nanoscale systems, and experimental tests to distinguish vibrational and electron interaction mechanisms for the enhanced noise.

Current noise in three-terminal hybrid quantum point contacts

We investigate the current noise of three-terminal hybrid structures at arbitrary bias voltages. Our results indicate that the noise can be a useful tool to extract dynamical information in multi-terminal hybrid structures. The zero-frequency noise is sensitive to the coupling with a normal lead. As a result, the characteristic multiple-step structure of the noise Fano factor due to multiple Andreev reflection will be suppressed as we increase this coupling. In addition, the internal dynamics due to processes of Andreev reflection and multiple Andreev reflection raises rich features in the noise spectrum corresponding to the energy differences of various dynamical processes.

Fundamental quantum noise mapping with tunnelling microscopes tested at surface structures of subatomic lateral size

We present a measurement scheme that enables quantitative detection of the shot noise in a scanning tunnelling microscope while scanning the sample. As test objects we study defect structures produced on an iridium single crystal at low temperatures. The defect structures appear in the constant current images as protrusions with curvature radii well below the atomic diameter. The measured power spectral density of the noise is very near to the quantum limit with Fano factor F = 1. While the constant current images show detailed structures expected for tunnelling involving d-atomic orbitals of Ir, we find the current noise to be without pronounced spatial variation as expected for shot noise arising from statistically independent events.

The number of transmission channels through a single-molecule junction

We calculate transmission eigenvalue distributions for Pt-benzene-Pt and Pt-butadiene-Pt junctions using realistic state-of-the-art many-body techniques. An effective field theory of interacting π-electrons is used to include screening and van der Waals interactions with the metal electrodes. We find that the number of dominant transmission channels in a molecular junction is equal to the degeneracy of the molecular orbital closest to the metal Fermi level.

Shot noise in Fabry-Perot interferometers based on carbon nanotubes

We report on shot noise measurements in carbon nanotube based Fabry-Perot electronic interferometers. As a consequence of quantum interference, the noise power spectral density oscillates as a function of the voltage applied to the gate electrode. The quantum shot noise theory accounts for the data quantitatively and allows us to determine directly the transmissions of the two channels characterizing the nanotube. In the weak backscattering regime, the dependence of the noise on the backscattering current is found weaker than expected, pointing either to electron-electron interactions or to weak decoherence.

Divergence at low bias and down-mixing of the current noise in a diffusive superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junction

We present current noise measurements in a long diffusive superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junction in the low voltage regime, in which transport can be partially described in terms of coherent multiple Andreev reflections. We show that, when decreasing voltage, the current noise exhibits a strong divergence together with a broad peak. We ascribe this peak to the mixing between the ac-Josephson current and the noise of the junction itself. We show that the junction noise corresponds to the thermal noise of a nonlinear resistor 4k B T/R with R=V/I(V) and no adjustable parameters.

Shot noise measurements on a single molecule

We report measurements of shot noise in the current through a single D2 molecule. The molecular junctions were formed by means of the mechanically controllable break junction technique. The configuration of the D2 molecule bridging the gap between two Pt tips is verified by use of point contact spectroscopy. Maintaining the same junction shot noise measurements were performed and the observed quantum suppression shows that conductance is carried dominantly by a single, almost fully transparent conductance channel. This observation allows us to decide between conflicting model calculations for this system, and this may serve as a benchmark for further computations on molecular junctions.

Dynamical coulomb blockade of multiple Andreev reflections

We analyze the dynamical Coulomb blockade of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in a superconducting quantum point contact coupled to a macroscopic impedance. We find that at very low transmission the blockade scales as n2 with n = Int(2delta/eV), where V is the bias voltage and delta is the superconducting gap, as it would correspond to the occurrence of shots of charge ne. For higher transmission the blockade is reduced because of both the Pauli principle and the elastic renormalization of the MAR probability, and for certain voltage regions it may even become an anti-blockade; i.e., the current is enhanced due to the coupling with the electromagnetic environment.

Coherent multiple charge transfer in a superconducting NbN tunnel junction

We measured shot noise and submillimeter-wave response in a superconducting NbN tunnel junction that had a subharmonic gap structure on the current-voltage (I-V) curve. We found that the observed effective charge, defined from the noise-current ratio, tends to a steplike function of voltage. In the presence of submillimeter-wave radiation of frequency v, novel step structures spaced by hv/2e below and above the half-gap voltage clearly appeared on the I-V curve, overlapping the ordinary photon-assisted tunneling steps spaced by hv/e. Observation of these features provides clear evidence that coherent multiple Andreev reflection processes occur in the NbN tunnel junction with low barrier transparency.

Noise and full counting statistics of incoherent multiple Andreev reflection

We present a general theory for the full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflections in incoherent superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. The theory, based on a stochastic path integral approach, is applied to a superconductor-double-barrier system. It is found that all cumulants of the current show a pronounced subharmonic gap structure at voltages V=2Delta/en. For low voltages V<<Delta/e, the counting statistics results from diffusion of multiple charges in energy space, giving the pth cumulant Q(p) proportional, variantV(2-p), diverging for p> or =3. We show that this low-voltage result holds for a large class of incoherent superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts.

Coulomb-blockade-induced bound quasiparticle states in a double-island structure

We determine the low temperature shape of the Coulomb-blockade staircase in a superconducting double-island device. For an odd number of electrons, in the ground state the intrinsic quasiparticle is bound to the tunneling contact. For a single channel contact the gap between the ground state and the continuum of excited states is of the order of the Josephson energy E(J). The temperature dependence of the Coulomb-blockade step width is nonmonotonic, with the minimal width occurring at T(i) approximately E(J)/ln(square root DeltaE(J)/delta), where Delta and delta are, respectively, the superconducting gap and mean level spacing in the island. For an even number of electrons, the Coulomb enhancement of the Josephson energy is shown to be significantly stronger than that for a single grain coupled to a lead. If the electrostatic energy favors a single broken Cooper pair, the resulting quasiparticles are bound to the contact at T=0.

Full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflection

We derive the full counting statistics of charge transfer through a voltage biased superconducting junction. We find that, for measurement times much longer than the inverse Josephson frequency, the counting statistics describes a correlated transfer of quanta of multiple electron charges, each quantum associated with the transfer of a single quasiparticle. An expression for the counting statistics in terms of the quasiparticle scattering amplitudes is derived.

Full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflections

We derive the full distribution of transmitted particles through a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transparency under voltage bias. The charge transport is dominated by multiple Andreev reflections. The counting statistics is a multinomial distribution of processes, in which multiple charges ne (n=1,2,3, ...) are transferred through the contact. For zero temperature we obtain analytical expressions for the probabilities of the multiple Andreev reflections. The current, shot noise, and high current cumulants in a variety of situations can be obtained from our result.

Quantum partition noise of photon-created electron-hole pairs

We show experimentally that even when no bias voltage is applied to a quantum conductor, the electronic quantum partition noise can be investigated with GHz radio frequency excitation. Using a quantum point contact configuration as the ballistic conductor we are able to make an accurate determination of the partition noise Fano factor resulting from the photon-assisted shot noise. Applying both voltage bias and rf irradiation we are able to make a definitive quantitative test of the scattering theory of photon-assisted shot noise.

Shot noise and multiple Andreev reflections in d-wave superconductors

We present a theoretical analysis of the shot noise in d-wave/d-wave contacts with arbitrary transparency, including the contribution of multiple Andreev reflections. The multiple charge quanta transferred in these processes are revealed as a huge enhancement of the noise-current ratio at low voltages, which survives for all crystal misorientations. We also show how different ingredients such as nonmagnetic impurities or a magnetic field produce very characteristic hallmarks in the shot noise, which can be used as a further test of the d-wave scenario in superconducting cuprates.

Spontaneous formation of a pi soliton in a superconducting wire with an odd number of electrons

We consider a one-dimensional superconducting wire where the total number of electrons can be controlled in the Coulomb blockade regime. We predict that a pi soliton (kink) will spontaneously form in the system when the number of electrons is odd, because this configuration has a lower energy. If the wire with an odd number of electrons is closed in a ring, the phase difference on the two sides of the soliton will generate a supercurrent detectable by a SQUID. The two degenerate states with the current flowing clockwise or counterclockwise can be utilized as a qubit.

Circuit theory for full counting statistics in multiterminal circuits

We propose a theory that treats the current, noise, and, generally, the full current statistics of electron transfer in a mesoscopic system in a unified, simple, and efficient way. The theory appears to be a circuit theory of 2 x 2 matrices associated with Keldysh Green functions. We illustrate the theory by considering the big fluctuations of currents in various three-terminal circuits.

Subharmonic shapiro steps and assisted tunneling in superconducting point contacts

We analyze the current in a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transmission in the presence of a microwave radiation. The interplay between the ac Josephson current and the microwave signal gives rise to Shapiro steps at voltages V = (m/n)h(omega)(r)/2e, where n,m are integer numbers and omega(r) is the radiation frequency. The subharmonic steps (n not equal 1) are a consequence of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) and provide a signature of the peculiar ac Josephson effect at high transmission. Moreover, the dc current exhibits a rich subgap structure due to photon-assisted MARs.

Direct link between Coulomb blockade and shot noise in a quantum-coherent structure

We analyze the current-voltage characteristic of a quantum conduction channel coupled to an electromagnetic environment with arbitrary frequency-dependent impedance. In the weak blockade regime the correction to the Ohmic behavior is directly related to the channel current fluctuations, vanishing at perfect transmission in the same way as shot noise. This relation can be generalized to describe the environmental Coulomb blockade in a generic mesoscopic conductor coupled to an external impedance, as the response of the latter to the current fluctuations in the former.
