Helium-4 Bose fluids formed in one-dimensional 18 A diameter pores

Experimental realization of one dimensional helium

As the spatial dimension is lowered, locally stabilizing interactions are reduced, leading to the emergence of strongly fluctuating phases of matter without classical analogues. Here we report on the experimental observation of a one dimensional quantum liquid of 4He using nanoengineering by confining it within a porous material preplated with a noble gas to enhance dimensional reduction. The resulting excitations of the confined 4He are qualitatively different than bulk superfluid helium, and can be analyzed in terms of a mobile impurity allowing for the characterization of the emergent quantum liquid beyond the Luttinger liquid paradigm. The low dimensional helium system offers the possibility of tuning via pressure—from weakly interacting, all the way to the super Tonks-Girardeau gas of strongly interacting hard-core particles.

Limited Quantum Helium Transportation through Nano-channels by Quantum Fluctuation

Helium at low temperatures has unique quantum properties such as superfluidity, which causes it to behave differently from a classical fluid. Despite our deep understanding of quantum mechanics, there are many open questions concerning the properties of quantum fluids in nanoscale systems. Herein, the quantum behavior of helium transportation through one-dimensional nanopores was evaluated by measuring the adsorption of quantum helium in the nanopores of single-walled carbon nanohorns and AlPO4-5 at 2-5 K. Quantum helium was transported unimpeded through nanopores larger than 0.7 nm in diameter, whereas quantum helium transportation was significantly restricted through 0.4-nm and 0.6-nm nanopores. Conversely, nitrogen molecules diffused through the 0.4-nm nanopores at 77 K. Therefore, quantum helium behaved as a fluid comprising atoms larger than 0.4-0.6 nm. This phenomenon was remarkable, considering that helium is the smallest existing element with a (classical) size of approximately 0.27 nm. This finding revealed the presence of significant quantum fluctuations. Quantum fluctuation determined the behaviors of quantum flux and is essential to understanding unique quantum behaviors in nanoscale systems.

NMR signature of one-dimensional behavior of 3He in nanopores

We have performed thermodynamic and NMR relaxation time measurements of 3He adsorbed in the pores of the mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 at temperatures down to 1.7 K and at a range of frequencies up to 240 kHz. The MCM-41 substrate comprises a uniform array of quasi-1D straight pores with a diameter of 2.3 nm. We preplated the pores with a monolayer of 4He to achieve an effective diameter of 1.6 nm at low temperatures. We made NMR measurements as a function of line density and frequency to investigate the spin dynamics and the effect of dimensionality. We observed T(1) is proportional to ω1/2, which is characteristic of one-dimensional diffusion. At these temperatures this arises from a classical size effect in the narrow pores. Our results demonstrate the possibility to study the spin dynamics of a 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at lower temperatures, where the 3He liquid will constitute a quantum 1D system.

Thermodynamic evidence for nanoscale bose-einstein condensation in (4)He confined in nanoporous media

We report the measurements of the heat capacity of (4)He confined in nanoporous Gelsil glass that has nanopores of 2.5-nm diameter at pressures up to 5.3 MPa. The heat capacity has a broad peak at a temperature much higher than the superfluid transition temperature obtained using the torsional oscillator technique. The peak provides definite thermodynamic evidence for the formation of localized Bose-Einstein condensates on nanometer length scales. The temperature dependence of the heat capacity is described well by the excitations of phonons and rotons, supporting the existence of localized Bose-Einstein condensates.

Superfluidity of 4He in one and three dimensions realized in nanopores

Superfluidity in one and three dimensions has been studied for 4He fluid films adsorbed in nanopores which are straight channels and three-dimensionally connected pores, respectively. We observed the superfluid in one and three dimensions where thermal phonon wavelengths are much longer than the channel diameter and the period of the pore connection, respectively, and found that the superfluid onset depends on the pore connection. In the straight channels, the observed superfluid density disappears at a temperature far below the heat capacity anomaly of the Ginzburg-Landau transition, while in the pores connected in three dimension, the adsorbed 4He films show an evident three-dimensional transition where the superfluid onset occurs at the heat capacity peak.

Possible one-dimensional 3He quantum fluid formed in nanopores

Heat capacity measurements have been made down to 5 mK for 3He fluid films adsorbed in one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-scale pores, 28 A in diameter, preplated with 4He of 1.47 atomic layers. At low 3He density, the heat capacity shows a density-dependent, Schottky-like peak near 150 mK asymptoting to the value corresponding to a 2D Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. The peak behavior is attributed to the crossover from a 2D gas to a 1D state at low temperatures. The degenerate state of the 1D 3He fluid is indicated by a predominantly linear temperature dependence below about 30 mK.

Anomalous suppression of superfluidity in 4He confined in a nanoporous glass

We explore the superfluidity of 4He confined in a porous glass, which has nanopores of 2.5 nm in diameter, at pressures up to 5 MPa. With increasing pressure, the superfluidity is drastically suppressed, and the superfluid transition temperature approaches 0 K at some critical pressure, Pc approximately 3.4 MPa. The feature suggests that the extreme confinement of 4He into the nanopores induces a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a nonsuperfluid at 0 K and at Pc.
