Sharp spectral lines observed in gamma-ray ionized parahydrogen crystals

Communication: Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of the H6+ cation in the gas phase

The H₆⁺ cation was generated in a pulsed-discharge supersonic expansion of hydrogen and mass-selected in a time-of-flight spectrometer. Its vibrational spectrum was measured in the region of 2050-4550 cm^-1 using infrared photodissociation with a tunable OPO/OPA laser system. The H₆⁺ photodissociates, producing H₅⁺, H₄⁺, and H₃⁺ fragments; each of these fragment channels has a different spectrum. Computational studies identify two low-lying isomers described in previous work, whose energies were evaluated at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//MP2/cc-pVTZ level of theory. A D_2d species having an H₂⁺ cation bridging between two perpendicular H₂ molecules is the global minimum structure. A C_s structure with an H₃⁺ core ion bound to both H₂ and an H atom lies 4.0 kcal mol^-1 higher in energy. Anharmonic vibrational spectra were computed for each of these isomers with second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) in combination with density functional theory at the B2PLYP/cc-pVTZ level. The comparison between experimental and predicted spectra confirms the presence of both the D_2d and C_s structures and explains the spectra in different fragmentation channels. Although we find reasonable agreement between the experiment and the spectra predicted by VPT2 computations, a more sophisticated computational approach is needed to better understand this complex system.

Electron spin resonance study on H6+, H5D+, H4D2+, and H2D4+ in solid parahydrogen

We carried out an electron spin resonance (ESR) study on hydrogen ion radicals produced by radiolysis of solid para-H(2). In addition to quartet ESR lines proposed to be H(2) (+)-core H(6) (+) (D(2d)) ions in solid para-H(2) [T. Kumada et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 7, 776 (2005)], we newly observed totally more than 50 resolved lines in gamma-ray irradiated solid para-H(2)-ortho-D(2) (1 mol %) and para-H(2)-HD (1 mol %) mixtures. We assigned these lines to be isotope substituents of H(2) (+)-core H(6) (+) ions such as H(5)D(+), H(4)D(2) (+), and H(2)D(4) (+) throughout the comparison of their ESR parameters with theoretical results. These results provide a conclusive evidence that H(2) (+)-core H(6) (+) ions are generated in irradiated solid hydrogens. Analysis of the EPR spectrum and ab initio calculations predicts D(2d) symmetry of the H(6) (+) ions, whereas a lowering symmetry (D(2d)-->C(2v)) induced by asymmetric nuclear wave function is observed in H(5)D(+) and H(4)D(2) (+). We also observed isotope-substitution reactions such as H(6) (+)+D(2)-->H(4)D(2) (+)+H(2) and H(6) (+)+HD-->H(5)D(+)+H(2), which are analogous to the well-known isotope-condensation reactions of H(3) (+) in dark nebula, H(3) (+)+HD-->HD(2) (+)+H(2) and HD(2) (+)+HD-->D(3) (+)+H(2).

Multipole moments and polarizabilities of nonpolar diatomic molecules through quantum solvation in solid parahydrogen: The quadrupole moment of N2

It is shown in this paper that from the study of the induced infrared absorption spectra of homonuclear diatomic molecules solvated as impurities in a molecular quantum solid, it is possible to extract information about the rovibrational matrix elements of the multipole moments and polarizability of the embedded molecule. Theoretical expressions are derived for the integrated absorption coefficients of various multipole-field-induced double transitions involving guest-host pairs in a solid para-H(2) matrix. The intensities of some of the quadrupole moment induced transitions involving the N(2)-para-H(2) pair have been measured. From a comparison of the experimental and theoretical intensities, rovibrational matrix elements of the quadrupole moment of N(2) are determined in its ground vibrational state.
