Optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators

Stochastic scattering theory for excitation-induced dephasing: Time-dependent nonlinear coherent exciton lineshapes

We develop a stochastic theory that treats time-dependent exciton-exciton s-wave scattering and that accounts for dynamic Coulomb screening, which we describe within a mean-field limit. With this theory, we model excitation-induced dephasing effects on time-resolved two-dimensional coherent optical lineshapes and we identify a number of features that can be attributed to the many-body dynamics occurring in the background of the exciton, including dynamic line narrowing, mixing of real and imaginary spectral components, and multi-quantum states. We test the model by means of multidimensional coherent spectroscopy on a two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductor that hosts tightly bound excitons and biexcitons that feature strong polaronic character. We find that the exciton nonlinear coherent lineshape reflects many-body correlations that give rise to excitation-induced dephasing. Furthermore, we observe that the exciton lineshape evolves with the population time over time windows in which the population itself is static in a manner that reveals the evolution of the multi-exciton many-body couplings. Specifically, the dephasing dynamics slow down with time, at a rate that is governed by the strength of exciton many-body interactions and on the dynamic Coulomb screening potential. The real part of the coherent optical lineshape displays strong dispersive character at zero time, which transforms to an absorptive lineshape on the dissipation timescale of excitation-induced dephasing effects, while the imaginary part displays converse behavior. Our microscopic theoretical approach is sufficiently flexible to allow for a wide exploration of how system-bath dynamics contribute to linear and non-linear time-resolved spectral behavior.

Unusual electronic and vibrational properties in the colossal thermopower material FeSb2

The iron antimonide FeSb₂ possesses an extraordinarily high thermoelectric power factor at low temperature, making it a leading candidate for cryogenic thermoelectric cooling devices. However, the origin of this unusual behavior is controversial, having been variously attributed to electronic correlations as well as the phonon-drag effect. The optical properties of a material provide information on both the electronic and vibrational properties. The optical conductivity reveals an anisotropic response at room temperature; the low-frequency optical conductivity decreases rapidly with temperature, signalling a metal-insulator transition. One-dimensional semiconducting behavior is observed along the b axis at low temperature, in agreement with first-principle calculations. The infrared-active lattice vibrations are also symmetric and extremely narrow, indicating long phonon relaxation times and a lack of electron-phonon coupling. Surprisingly, there are more lattice modes along the a axis than are predicted from group theory; several of these modes undergo significant changes below about 100 K, hinting at a weak structural distortion or phase transition. While the extremely narrow phonon line shapes favor the phonon-drag effect, the one-dimensional behavior of this system at low temperature may also contribute to the extraordinarily high thermopower observed in this material.

Coherence and superconductivity in coupled one-dimensional chains: a case study of YBa2Cu3Oy

We report the infrared (IR) response of Cu-O chains in the high-T(c) superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(y) over the doping range spanning y=6.28-6.75. We find evidence for a power law scaling at mid-IR frequencies consistent with predictions for Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, thus supporting the notion of one-dimensional transport in the chains. We analyze the role of coupling to the CuO2 planes in establishing metallicity and superconductivity in disordered chain fragments.

Ground-state phase diagram of a half-filled one-dimensional extended hubbard model

The density-matrix renormalization group is used to study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsion and hopping t. A critical line V(c)(U) approximately U/2 separates a Mott insulating phase from a charge-density-wave phase. The formation of bound charge excitations for V>2t changes the phase transition from continuous to first-order at a tricritical point U(t) approximately 3.7t, V(t)=2t. A frustrating effective antiferromagnetic spin coupling induces a bond-order-wave phase on the critical line V(c)(U) for U(t)<U less, similar 7t.

Spectral function of a quarter-filled one-dimensional charge density wave insulator

We consider a one-dimensional charge density wave insulator formed by umklapp processes in a quarter-filled band. The spectrum of the model consists of gapless, uncharged excitations carrying spin +/- 1/2 (spinons) and gapped, spinless excitations carrying charge -/+ signe/2 (solitons and antisolitons). We calculate the low-energy behavior of the single-electron Green's function at zero temperature. The spectral function exhibits a featureless scattering continuum of two solitons and many spinons. The theory predicts that the gap observed by angle resolved photoemission is twice the activation gap in the dc conductivity. We comment on possible applications to PrBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) and to the Bechgaard salts.
