Aging in 1D discrete spin models and equivalent systems

Spontaneous energy-barrier formation in entropy-driven glassy dynamics

The description of activated relaxation of glassy systems in the multidimensional configurational space is a long-standing open problem. We develop a phenomenological description of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a model with a rough potential energy landscape and we analyze it both numerically and analytically. The model provides an example of dynamics where typical relaxation channels go over finite-potential energy barriers despite the presence of less-energy-demanding escaping paths in configurational space; we expect this phenomenon to be also relevant in the thermally activated regime of realistic models of glass-formers. In this case, we found that typical dynamical paths episodically reach an high-fixed-threshold energy, unexpectedly giving rise to a simple thermally activated aging phenomenology. In order to unveil this peculiar aging behavior, we introduce a novel description of the dynamics in terms of spontaneously emerging dynamical basins.

Nature versus nurture: predictability in low-temperature Ising dynamics

Consider a dynamical many-body system with a random initial state subsequently evolving through stochastic dynamics. What is the relative importance of the initial state ("nature") versus the realization of the stochastic dynamics ("nurture") in predicting the final state? We examined this question for the two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet following an initial deep quench from T=∞ to T=0. We performed Monte Carlo studies on the overlap between "identical twins" raised in independent dynamical environments, up to size L=500. Our results suggest an overlap decaying with time as t(-θ)(h) with θ(h)=0.22 ± 0.02; the same exponent holds for a quench to low but nonzero temperature. This "heritability exponent" may equal the persistence exponent for the two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet, but the two differ more generally.

Correlation function and generalized master equation of arbitrary age

We study a two-state statistical process with a non-Poisson distribution of sojourn times. In accordance with earlier work, we find that this process is characterized by aging and we study three different ways to define the correlation function of arbitrary age of the corresponding dichotomous fluctuation. These three methods yield exact expressions, thus coinciding with the recent result by Godrèche and Luck [J. Stat. Phys. 104, 489 (2001)]. Actually, non-Poisson statistics yields infinite memory at the probability level, thereby breaking any form of Markovian approximation, including the one adopted herein, to find an approximated analytical formula. For this reason, we check the accuracy of this approximated formula by comparing it with the numerical treatment of the second of the three exact expressions. We find that, although not exact, a simple analytical expression for the correlation function of arbitrary age is very accurate. We establish a connection between the correlation function and a generalized master equation of the same age. Thus this formalism, related to models used in glassy materials, allows us to illustrate an approach to the statistical treatment of blinking quantum dots, bypassing the limitations of the conventional Liouville treatment.

The Brownian web

Arratia, [Arratia, R. (1979) Ph.D. thesis (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and unpublished work] and later Toth and Werner [Toth, B. & Werner, W. (1998) Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 111, 375-452] constructed random processes that formally correspond to coalescing one-dimensional Brownian motions starting from every space-time point. We extend their work by constructing and characterizing what we call the Brownian Web as a random variable taking values in an appropriate (metric) space whose points are (compact) sets of paths. This leads to general convergence criteria and, in particular, to convergence in distribution of coalescing random walks in the scaling limit to the Brownian Web.
