High spin systems with orbital degeneracy

Fingerprints of spin-orbital entanglement in transition metal oxides

The concept of spin-orbital entanglement on superexchange bonds in transition metal oxides is introduced and explained on several examples. It is shown that spin-orbital entanglement in superexchange models destabilizes the long-range (spin and orbital) order and may lead either to a disordered spin-liquid state or to novel phases at low temperature which arise from strongly frustrated interactions. Such novel ground states cannot be described within the conventionally used mean field theory which separates spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Even in cases where the ground states are disentangled, spin-orbital entanglement occurs in excited states and may become crucial for a correct description of physical properties at finite temperature. As an important example of this behaviour we present spin-orbital entanglement in the RV O(3) perovskites, with R = La,Pr,…,Y b,Lu, where the finite temperature properties of these compounds can be understood only using entangled states: (i) the thermal evolution of the optical spectral weights, (ii) the dependence of the transition temperatures for the onset of orbital and magnetic order on the ionic radius in the phase diagram of the RV O(3) perovskites, and (iii) the dimerization observed in the magnon spectra for the C-type antiferromagnetic phase of Y V O(3). Finally, it is shown that joint spin-orbital excitations in an ordered phase with coexisting antiferromagnetic and alternating orbital order introduce topological constraints for the hole propagation and will thus radically modify the transport properties in doped Mott insulators where hole motion implies simultaneous spin and orbital excitations.

Spin-orbital entanglement and violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules

We point out that large composite spin-orbital fluctuations in Mott insulators with t(2g) orbital degeneracy are a manifestation of quantum entanglement of spin and orbital variables. This results in a dynamical nature of the spin superexchange interactions, which fluctuate over positive and negative values, and leads to an apparent violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules.

Hole dynamics in spin and orbital ordered vanadium perovskites

A theory of doped perovskite vanadates with spin and orbital orders is presented. Mobile holes are strongly renormalized by spin excitations (magnons) in the spin G-type and orbital C-type (SG-OC) order, and orbital excitations (orbitons) in the spin C-type and orbital G-type (SC-OG) one. Hole dynamics in a staggered t(2g) orbital array is distinguished from that in the antiferromagnetic order and the e(g) orbital one. The fragile character of the (SG-OC) order in Y1-xCaxVO3 is attributed to the orbiton softening induced by a reduction of the spin order parameter.

Dimerization versus orbital-moment ordering in a Mott insulator YVO3

We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of t(2g) orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO6 octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO3. At finite temperature, an orbital instability in the C-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in the absence of lattice distortions. The calculated spin structure factor shows a magnon splitting at q-->=(0,0,pi / 2) due to the orbital dimerization.

Magnetic neutron scattering study of YVO3: evidence for an orbital Peierls state

Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO3, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature-induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a quasi-one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO3 with the "orbital Peierls state," a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bonds.
