Single-Electron Qubits Based on Quantum Ring States on Solid Neon Surface

Single electrons trapped on solid-neon surfaces have recently emerged as a promising platform for charge qubits. Experimental results have revealed their exceptionally long coherence times, yet the actual quantum states of these trapped electrons, presumably on imperfectly flat neon surfaces, remain elusive. In this Letter, we examine the electron's interactions with neon surface topography, such as bumps and valleys. By evaluating the surface charges induced by the electron, we demonstrate its strong perpendicular binding to the neon surface. The Schrödinger equation for the electron's lateral motion on the curved 2D surface is then solved for extensive topographical variations. Our results reveal that surface bumps can naturally bind an electron, forming unique quantum ring states that align with experimental observations. We also show that the electron's excitation energy can be tuned using a modest magnetic field to facilitate qubit operation. This study offers a leap in our understanding of electron-on-solid-neon qubit properties and provides strategic insights on minimizing charge noise and scaling the system to propel forward quantum computing architectures.

Crystallization seeds favour crystallization only during initial growth

Crystallization represents the prime example of a disorder-order transition. In realistic situations, however, container walls and impurities are frequently present and hence crystallization is heterogeneously seeded. Rarely the seeds are perfectly compatible with the thermodynamically favoured crystal structure and thus induce elastic distortions, which impede further crystal growth. Here we use a colloidal model system, which not only allows us to quantitatively control the induced distortions but also to visualize and follow heterogeneous crystallization with single-particle resolution. We determine the sequence of intermediate structures by confocal microscopy and computer simulations, and develop a theoretical model that describes our findings. The crystallite first grows on the seed but then, on reaching a critical size, detaches from the seed. The detached and relaxed crystallite continues to grow, except close to the seed, which now prevents crystallization. Hence, crystallization seeds facilitate crystallization only during initial growth and then act as impurities.

Direct observation of prefreezing at the interface melt-solid in polymer crystallization

Crystallization is almost always initiated at an interface to a solid. This observation is classically explained by the assumption of a reduced barrier for crystal nucleation at the interface. However, an interface can also induce crystallization by prefreezing (i.e., the formation of a crystalline layer that is already stable above the bulk melting temperature). We present an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based in situ observation of a prefreezing process at the interface of a polymeric model system and a crystalline solid. Explicitly, we show an interfacial ordered layer that forms well above the bulk melting temperature with thickness that increases on approaching melt-solid coexistence. Below the melting temperature, the ordered layer initiates crystal growth into the bulk, leading to an oriented, homogeneous semicrystalline structure.

Effects of carbon coating and pore corrugation on capillary condensation of nitrogen in SBA-15 mesoporous silica

To examine the origin of an ink-bottle-like structure in SBA-15 formed by carbon coating and the effects of pore corrugation on capillary condensation and evaporation of a vapor in the cylindrical pores, we measured the adsorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77 K on 10 kinds of SBA-15 samples before and after a carbon coating process by the exposure to acetylene at 1073 K, as well as desorption scanning curves and subloops on the untreated samples. These SBA-15 samples were synthesized under the different conditions of initial SiO2/P123 ratio and hydrothermal treatment. SBA-15 with relatively large microporosity tends to form easily constrictions inside the main channels by the carbon coating. This strongly suggests that the rough pore walls of SBA-15 may induce the incomplete wetting of carbon layers on the pore walls to form the constrictions inside the cylindrical pores. A comparison of two subloops implies that the pores of SBA-15 synthesized with a SiO2/P123 ratio of 75 consist of an assembly of connecting domains of different diameters; that is, the pores are highly corrugated. For SBA-15 synthesized with a SiO2/P123 ratio of 60, the amplitude of the pore corrugation is significantly decreased by the prolonged hydrothermal treatment at 373 K. On the other hand, for SBA-15 synthesized with a SiO2/P123 ratio of 45, the amplitude of the corrugation is negligibly small, although the cylindrical pores are interconnected through narrow necks with each other. It is found that the smaller the amplitude of the pore corrugation, the smaller the width of the hysteresis loop.

Partial dewetting of polyethylene thin films on rough silicon dioxide surfaces

The effect of roughness on the dewetting behavior of polyethylene thin films on silicon dioxide substrates is presented. Smooth and rough silicon dioxide substrates of 0.3 and 3.2-3.9 nm root-mean-square roughness were prepared by thermal oxidation of silicon wafers and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition on silicon wafers, respectively. Polymer thin films of approximately 80 nm thickness were deposited by spin-coating on these substrates. Subsequent dewetting and crystallization of the polyethylene were observed by hot-stage optical microscopy in reflection mode. During heating, the polymer films melt and dewet on both substrates. Further observations after cooling indicate that, whereas complete dewetting occurs on the smooth substrate surface, partial dewetting occurs for the polymer film on the rough surface. The average thickness of the residual film on the rough surface was determined by ellipsometry to be a few nanometers, and the spatial distribution of the polymer in the cavities of the rough surface could be obtained by X-ray reflectometry. The residual film originates from the impregnation of the porous surface by the polymer fluid, leading to the observed partial dewetting behavior. This new type of partial dewetting should have important practical consequences, as most real surfaces exhibit significant roughness.

Triple-point wetting of van der Waals films on self-affine and mound rough surfaces

The influence of random self-affine and mound substrate roughness on the wetting scenario of adsorbed van der Waals films is investigated as a function of characteristic roughness parameters. The roughness influence, which leads to triple-point wetting, is calculated by the bending free energy penalty of a solid film picking up the substrate morphology. For self-affine roughness, an increment of the roughness exponent H and/or a decrement of the roughness ratio w/xi (with w being the rms roughness amplitude and xi the in-plane correlation length) leads to a noticeable increment of the thickness of adsorbed solid films. Similarly for mound roughness the thickness dependence of the solid wetting layer on the average mound separation lambda and system correlation length zeta follow the general scenario that smoother substrates (w/zeta<<1 and/or w/lambda<<1) lead to thicker solid films. Nevertheless, in this case the thickness increment is a highly nonmonotonic function of zeta and lambda for lambda<or=zeta.
