Order-disorder transition in a two-dimensional associating lattice gas

We study an associating lattice gas (ALG) using Monte Carlo simulation on the triangular lattice and semianalytical solutions on Husimi lattices. In this model, the molecules have an orientational degree of freedom and the interactions depend on the relative orientations of nearest-neighbor molecules, mimicking the formation of hydrogen bonds. We focus on the transition between the high-density liquid (HDL) phase and the isotropic phase in the limit of full occupancy, corresponding to chemical potential μ→∞, which has not yet been studied systematically. Simulations yield a continuous phase transition at τ_{c}=k_{B}T_{c}/γ=0.4763(1) (where -γ is the bond energy) between the low-temperature HDL phase, with a nonvanishing mean orientation of the molecules, and the high-temperature isotropic phase. Results for critical exponents and the Binder cumulant indicate that the transition belongs to the three-state Potts model universality class, even though the ALG Hamiltonian does not have the full permutation symmetry of the Potts model. In contrast with simulation, the Husimi lattice analyses furnish a discontinuous phase transition, characterized by a discontinuity of the nematic order parameter. The transition temperatures (τ_{c}=0.51403 and 0.51207 for trees built with triangles and hexagons, respectively) are slightly higher than that found via simulation. Since the Husimi lattice studies show that the ALG phase diagram features a discontinuous isotropic-HDL line for finite μ, three possible scenarios arise for the triangular lattice. The first is that in the limit μ→∞ the first-order line ends in a critical point; the second is a change in the nature of the transition at some finite chemical potential; the third is that the entire line is one of continuous phase transitions. Results from other ALG models and the fact that mean-field approximations show a discontinuous phase transition for the three-state Potts model (known to possess a continuous transition) lends some weight to the third alternative.

Phase transition properties of the Bell-Lavis model

Using Monte Carlo calculations we analyze the order and the universality class of phase transitions into a low-density (honeycomb) phase of a triangular antiferromagnetic three-state Bell-Lavis model. The results are obtained in a whole interval of chemical potential μ corresponding to the honeycomb phase. Our results demonstrate that the phase transitions might be attributed to the three-state Potts universality class for all μ values except for the edges of the honeycomb phase existence. At the honeycomb phase and the low-density gas phase boundary the transitions become of the first order. At another, honeycomb-to-frustrated phase boundary, we observe the approach to the crossover from the three-state Potts to the Ising model universality class. We also obtain the Schottky anomaly in the specific heat close to this edge. We show that the intermediate planar phase, found in a very similar antiferromagnetic triangular Blume-Capel model, does not occur in the Bell-Lavis model.

Hydration of an apolar solute in a two-dimensional waterlike lattice fluid

In a previous work, we investigated a two-dimensional lattice-fluid model, displaying some waterlike thermodynamic anomalies. The model, defined on a triangular lattice, is now extended to aqueous solutions with apolar species. Water molecules are of the "Mercedes Benz" type, i.e., they possess a D3 (equilateral triangle) symmetry, with three equivalent bonding arms. Bond formation depends both on orientation and local density. The insertion of inert molecules displays typical signatures of hydrophobic hydration: large positive transfer free energy, large negative transfer entropy (at low temperature), strong temperature dependence of the transfer enthalpy and entropy, i.e., large (positive) transfer heat capacity. Model properties are derived by a generalized first order approximation on a triangle cluster.

Thermodynamic anomalies in a lattice model of water

We investigate a lattice-fluid model of water, defined on a three-dimensional body centered cubic lattice. Model molecules possess a tetrahedral symmetry, with four equivalent bonding arms, aiming to mimic the formation of hydrogen bonds. The model is similar to the one proposed by Roberts and Debenedetti [J. Chem. Phys. 105, 658 (1996)], simplified in that no distinction between bond "donors" and "acceptors" is imposed. Bond formation depends both on orientation and local density. In the ground state, we show that two different ordered (ice) phases are allowed. At finite temperature, we analyze homogeneous phases only, working out phase diagram, response functions, the temperature of maximum density locus, and the Kauzmann line. We make use of a generalized first-order approximation on a tetrahedral cluster. In the liquid phase, the model exhibits several anomalous properties observed in real water. In the low temperature region (supercooled liquid), there are evidences of a second critical point and, for some range of parameter values, this scenario is compatible with the existence of a reentrant spinodal.

Two-dimensional lattice-fluid model with waterlike anomalies

We investigate a lattice-fluid model defined on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, with the aim of reproducing qualitatively some anomalous properties of water. Model molecules are of the "Mercedes Benz" type, i.e., they possess a D3 (equilateral triangle) symmetry, with three bonding arms. Bond formation depends both on orientation and local density. We work out phase diagrams, response functions, and stability limits for the liquid phase, making use of a generalized first order approximation on a triangle cluster, whose accuracy is verified, in some cases, by Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram displays one ordered (solid) phase which is less dense than the liquid one. At fixed pressure the liquid phase response functions show the typical anomalous behavior observed in liquid water, while, in the supercooled region, a reentrant spinodal is observed.

Phase behavior of lattice associating binary mixtures: a Monte Carlo study

The lattice gas model is used to study effects of molecular association on the phase behavior of binary symmetric mixtures, in which only dimers consisting of different particles can form. It is demonstrated that the increase of the association energy leads to qualitative changes of the phase diagrams. In particular, the demixing transition is observed only for sufficiently low association energy. That demixing transition can be either first order or continuous. For sufficiently high energy of association the condensed phase shows a very well ordered structure even at high temperatures.
