Common energy scale for magnetism and superconductivity in underdoped cuprates: a muon spin resonance investigation of (Ca(x)La(1-x)) (Ba(1.75-x)La(0.25+x))Cu3O(y)

Chiral superconductivity in the alternate stacking compound 4Hb-TaS2

Van der Waals materials offer unprecedented control of electronic properties via stacking of different types of two-dimensional materials. A fascinating frontier, largely unexplored, is the stacking of strongly correlated phases of matter. We study 4Hb-TaS2, which naturally realizes an alternating stacking of 1T-TaS2 and 1H-TaS2 structures. The former is a well-known Mott insulator, which has recently been proposed to host a gapless spin-liquid ground state. The latter is a superconductor known to also host a competing charge density wave state. This raises the question of how these two components affect each other when stacked together. We find a superconductor with a T c of 2.7 Kelvin and anomalous properties, of which the most notable one is a signature of time-reversal symmetry breaking, abruptly appearing at the superconducting transition. This observation is consistent with a chiral superconducting state.

High-field μSR studies of superconducting and magnetic correlations in cuprates above T(c)

The advent of high transverse field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) has led to recent μSR investigations of the magnetic field response of cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature T(c). Here the results of such experiments on hole-doped cuprates are reviewed. Although these investigations are currently ongoing, it is clear that the effects of high field on the internal magnetic field distribution of these materials is dependent upon competition between superconductivity and magnetism. In La(2 - x)Sr(x)CuO(4) the response to the external field above T(c) is dominated by heterogeneous spin magnetism. However, the magnetism that dominates the observed inhomogeneous line broadening below x ∼ 0.19 is overwhelmed by the emergence of a completely different kind of magnetism in the heavily overdoped regime. The origin of the magnetism above x ∼ 0.19 is probably related to intrinsic disorder, but the systematic evolution of the magnetism with doping changes in the doping range beyond the superconducting 'dome'. In contrast, the width of the internal field distribution of underdoped Y Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) above T(c) is observed to track T(c) and the density of superconducting carriers. This observation suggests that the magnetic response above T(c) is not dominated by electronic moments, but rather inhomogeneous fluctuating superconductivity. The spatially inhomogeneous response of Y Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) to the applied field may be a means of minimizing energy, rather than being caused by intrinsic disorder.

Magnetic ordering in CuO from first principles: a cuprate antiferromagnet with fully three-dimensional exchange interactions

We investigate the interplay of bonding and magnetism in CuO by a first-principles self-interaction-free density-functional approach. Our analysis reveals that, at variance with typical low-dimensional cuprates, a fully three-dimensional view of the exchange interactions is needed to describe accurately the magnetic ground state and low-energy excitations in CuO. The apparent one-dimensional behavior of antiferromagnetic order is due to the presence of a single spin-polarized hole of d(z)2 character. This induces a strongly anisotropic magnetic ordering built up by ferromagnetic (x,y) layers, and antiferromagnetic chains along z, with exchange interactions of similar magnitude.

Nanoscopic coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6+x detected by muon spin rotation

We performed zero and transverse field muon spin rotation experiments on a large number of YBa2Cu3O6+x samples. We detect the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) short range magnetism with superconductivity below T(f) < or = 10 K in compositions 0.37 < or = x < or = 0.39. Most muons experience local AF fields, even when a SQUID detects a full superconducting volume fraction, which points to a local minimal interference organization of short AF stripes embedded in the superconductor. A detailed phase diagram is produced and the consequences of the minimal interference are discussed.

Superconductivity and field-induced magnetism in Pr2-xCexCuO4 single crystals

We report muon-spin rotation and relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the electron-doped high-T(c) superconductor Pr2-xCexCuO4. In a zero external magnetic field, superconductivity is found to coexist with dilute Cu spins that are static on the muSR time scale. In an applied field, we observe a mu(+)-Knight shift that is primarily due to the magnetic moment induced on the Pr ions. Below the superconducting transition temperature T(c), an additional source of local magnetic field appears throughout the volume of the sample. This finding is shown to be consistent with field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cu spins. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth lambda(ab) in the vortex state are also presented.
