Multiscale Patterning from Competing Interactions and Length Scales

We live in a research era marked by impressive new tools powering the scientific method to accelerate the discovery, prediction, and control of increasingly complex systems. In common with many disciplines and societal challenges and opportunities, materials and condensed matter sciences are beneficiaries. The volume and fidelity of experimental, computational, and visualization data available, and tools to rapidly interpret them, are remarkable. Conceptual frameworks, including multiscale, multiphysics modeling of this complexity, are fueled by the data and, in turn, guide directions for future experimental and computational strategies. In this spirit, I discuss the importance of competing interactions, length scales, and constraints as pervasive sources of spatiotemporal complexity. I use representative examples drawn from materials and condensed matter, including the important role of elasticity in some technologically important quantum materials. Relaxation and physical aging in network glasses: a review

Recent progress in the description of glassy relaxation and aging are reviewed for the wide class of network-forming materials such as GeO2, Ge x Se1-x , silicates (SiO2-Na2O) or borates (B2O3-Li2O), all of which have an important usefulness in domestic, geological or optoelectronic applications. A brief introduction of the glass transition phenomenology is given, together with the salient features that are revealed both from theory and experiments. Standard experimental methods used for the characterization of the slowing down of the dynamics are reviewed. We then discuss the important role played by aspects of network topology and rigidity for the understanding of the relaxation of the glass transition, while also permitting analytical predictions of glass properties from simple and insightful models based on the network structure. We also emphasize the great utility of computer simulations which probe the dynamics at the molecular level, and permit the calculation of various structure-related functions in connection with glassy relaxation and the physics of aging which reveal the non-equilibrium nature of glasses. We discuss the notion of spatial variations of structure which leads to the concept of 'dynamic heterogeneities', and recent results in relation to this important topic for network glasses are also reviewed.

Abrupt boundaries of intermediate phases and space filling in oxide glasses

Modulated differential scanning calorimetry measurements on bulk (Na(2)O)(x)(GeO(2))(1-x) glasses show a sharp reversibility window in the 14%<x<19% soda range, which correlates well with a broad global minimum in molar volumes. Raman and IR reflectance transverse- and longitudinal-optic mode frequencies exhibit anomalies between x(c)(1) = 14% (stress transition) and x(c)(2) = 19% (rigidity transition), with optical elasticity power laws confirming the nature of the transitions. Birefringence measurements dramatize the macroscopically stress-free nature of the intermediate phase in the reversibility window.

Adaptability and "intermediate phase" in randomly connected networks

We present a simple model that enables us to analytically characterize a floppy to rigid transition and an associated self-adaptive intermediate phase in a random bond network. In this intermediate phase, the network adapts itself to lower the stress due to constraints. Our simulations verify this picture. We use these insights to identify applications of these ideas in computational problems such as vertex cover and K-satisfiability.

Ageing, fragility and the reversibility window in bulk alloy glasses

Non-reversing relaxation enthalpies (ΔH(nr)) at glass transitions T(g)(x) in the P(x)Ge(x)Se(1-2x) ternary display wide, sharp and deep global minima ([Formula: see text]) in the 0.09<x<0.145 range, within which T(g) s become thermally reversing. In this reversibility window, glasses are found not to age, in contrast to ageing observed for fragile glass compositions outside the window. Thermal reversibility and lack of ageing seem to be paradigms of self-organization which molecular glasses share with protein structures which repetitively and reversibly change conformation near T(g) and the folding temperature respectively.

Network rigidity and properties of SiO2 and GeO2 glasses under pressure

We report in situ studies of SiO2 glass under pressure and find that temperature-induced densification takes place in a pressure window. To explain this effect, we study how rigidity of glasses changes under pressure, with rigidity percolation affecting the dynamics of local relaxation events. We link rigidity percolation in glasses to other effects, including a large increase of crystallization temperature and logarithmic relaxation under pressure.

Fibrillar templates and soft phases in systems with short-range dipolar and long-range interactions

We analyze the thermal fluctuations of particles that have a short-range dipolar attraction and a long-range repulsion. In an inhomogeneous particle density region, or "soft phase," filamentary patterns appear which are destroyed only at very high temperatures. The filaments act as a fluctuating template for correlated percolation in which low-energy excitations can move through the stable pattern by local rearrangements. At intermediate temperatures, dynamically averaged checkerboard states appear. We discuss possible implications for doped cuprate oxides and related materials.
