Coherent atom interactions mediated by dark-state polaritons

Photon-Mediated Spin-Exchange Dynamics of Spin-1 Atoms

We report direct observations of photon-mediated spin-exchange interactions in an atomic ensemble. Interactions extending over a distance of 500  μm are generated within a cloud of cold rubidium atoms coupled to a single mode of light in an optical resonator. We characterize the system via quench dynamics and imaging of the local magnetization, verifying the coherence of the interactions and demonstrating optical control of their strength and sign. Furthermore, by initializing the spin-1 system in the m_{f}=0 Zeeman state, we observe correlated pair creation in the m_{f}=±1 states, a process analogous to spontaneous parametric down-conversion and to spin mixing in Bose-Einstein condensates. Our work opens new opportunities in quantum simulation with long-range interactions and in entanglement-enhanced metrology.

Dissipative preparation of spin squeezed atomic ensembles in a steady state

We present and analyze a new approach for the generation of atomic spin-squeezed states. Our method involves the collective coupling of an atomic ensemble to a decaying mode of an open optical cavity. We demonstrate the existence of a collective atomic dark state, decoupled from the radiation field. By explicitly constructing this state we find that it can feature spin squeezing bounded only by the Heisenberg limit. We show that such dark states can be deterministically prepared via dissipative means, thus turning dissipation into a resource for entanglement. The scaling of the phase sensitivity taking realistic imperfections into account is discussed.

Manipulation of nonclassical atomic spin states

We report successful manipulation of nonclassical atomic spin states. We apply an off-resonant noncircularly-polarized light pulse to a measurement-induced squeezed spin state of a cold atomic ensemble. By changing the pulse duration, we clearly observe a rotation of the anisotropic quantum-noise distribution in good contrast with the case of manipulation of a coherent spin state where the quantum-noise distribution is always isotropic. This is an important step for quantum state tomography, quantum swapping, and precision spectroscopic measurement.

Resonance beating of light stored using atomic spinor polaritons

We investigate the storage of light in atomic rubidium vapor using a multilevel-tripod scheme. In the system, two collective dark polariton modes exist, forming an effective spinor quasiparticle. Storage of light is performed by dynamically reducing the optical group velocity to zero. After releasing the stored pulse, a beating of the two reaccelerated optical modes is monitored. The observed beating signal oscillates at an atomic transition frequency, opening the way to novel quantum limited measurements of atomic resonance frequencies and quantum switches.

A High-Brightness Source of Narrowband, Identical-Photon Pairs

We generated narrowband pairs of nearly identical photons at a rate of 5 x 10(4) pairs per second from a laser-cooled atomic ensemble inside an optical cavity. A two-photon interference experiment demonstrated that the photons could be made 90% indistinguishable, a key requirement for quantum information-processing protocols. Used as a conditional single-photon source, the system operated near the fundamental limits on recovery efficiency (57%), Fourier transform-limited bandwidth, and pair-generation-rate-limited suppression of two-photon events (factor of 33 below the Poisson limit). Each photon had a spectral width of 1.1 megahertz, ideal for interacting with atomic ensembles that form the basis of proposed quantum memories and logic.

Unconditional two-mode squeezing of separated atomic ensembles

We propose schemes for the unconditional preparation of a two-mode squeezed state of effective bosonic modes realized in a pair of atomic ensembles interacting collectively with optical cavity and laser fields. The scheme uses Raman transitions between stable atomic ground states and under ideal conditions produces pure entangled states in the steady state. The scheme works both for ensembles confined within a single cavity and for ensembles confined in separate, cascaded cavities.

Spin squeezing via one-axis twisting with coherent light

We propose a new method of spin squeezing of atomic spin, based on the interactions between atoms and off-resonant light which are known as paramagnetic Faraday rotation and the fictitious magnetic field of light. Since the projection process, squeezed light, or special interactions among the atoms are not required in this method, it can be widely applied to many systems. The attainable range of the squeezing parameter is zeta greater, similarS(-2/5), where S is the total spin, which is limited by additional fluctuations imposed by coherent light and the spherical nature of the spin distribution.
