Abstract
Optical pumping of molecules provides unique opportunities for control of chemical reactions at a wide range of rotational energies. This work reports a chemical reaction with extreme rotational excitation of a reactant and its kinetic characterization. We investigate the chemical reactivity for the hydrogen abstraction reaction SiO+ + H2 → SiOH+ + H in an ion trap. The SiO+ cations are prepared in a narrow rotational state distribution, including super-rotor states with rotational quantum number (j) as high as 170, using a broad-band optical pumping method. We show that the super-rotor states of SiO+ substantially enhance the reaction rate, a trend reproduced by complementary theoretical studies. We reveal the mechanism for the rotational enhancement of the reactivity to be a strong coupling of the SiO+ rotational mode with the reaction coordinate at the transition state on the dominant dynamical pathway.

Abstract
The O(1D) + H2 reaction is a prototype for simple atom-diatom insertion type mechanisms considered to involve deep potential wells. While exact quantum mechanical methods can be applied to describe the dynamics, such calculations are challenging given the numerous bound quantum states involved. Consequently, efforts have been made to develop alternative theoretical strategies to portray accurately the reactive process. Here we report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the O(1D) + D2 reaction over the 50-296 K range. The calculations employ three conceptually different approaches - mean potential phase space theory, the statistical quantum mechanical method and ring polymer molecular dynamics. The calculated rate constants are in excellent agreement over the entire temperature range, exhibiting only weak temperature dependence. The agreement between experiment and theory is also very good, with discrepancies smaller than 26%. Taken together, the present and previous theoretical results validate the hypothesis that long-lived complex formation dominates the reaction dynamics at low temperature.

Abstract
The concept of the transition state has played an important role in the field of chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics. Reactive resonances in the transition-state region can dramatically enhance the reaction probability; thus investigation of the reactive resonances has attracted great attention from chemical physicists for many decades. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress made in probing the elusive resonance phenomenon in the simple A + BC reaction and understanding its nature, especially in the benchmark F/Cl + H2 and their isotopic variants. The signatures of reactive resonances in the integral cross section, differential cross section (DCS), forward- and backward-scattered DCS, and anion photodetachment spectroscopy are comprehensively presented in individual prototype reactions. The dynamical origins of reactive resonances are also discussed in this review, based on information on the wave function in the transition-state region obtained by time-dependent quantum wave-packet calculations.

Abstract
[Reaction: see text]. The concept of transition state has played a crucial role in the field of chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics. Resonances in the transition state region are important in many chemical reactions at reaction energies near the thresholds. Detecting and characterizing isolated reaction resonances, however, have been a major challenge in both experiment and theory. In this Account, we review the most recent developments in the study of reaction resonances in the benchmark F + H 2 --> HF + H reaction. Crossed molecular beam scattering experiments on the F + H 2 reaction have been carried out recently using the high-resolution, highly sensitive H-atom Rydberg tagging technique with HF rovibrational states almost fully resolved. Pronounced forward scattering for the HF (nu' = 2) product has been observed at the collision energy of 0.52 kcal/mol in the F + H 2 (j = 0) reaction. Quantum dynamical calculations based on two new potential energy surfaces, the Xu-Xie-Zhang (XXZ) surface and the Fu-Xu-Zhang (FXZ) surface, show that the observed forward scattering of HF (nu' = 2) in the F + H 2 reaction is caused by two Feshbach resonances (the ground resonance and first excited resonance). More interestingly, the pronounced forward scattering of HF (nu' = 2) at 0.52 kcal/mol is enhanced considerably by the constructive interference between the two resonances. In order to probe the resonance potential more accurately, the isotope substituted F + HD --> HF + D reaction has been studied using the D-atom Rydberg tagging technique. A remarkable and fast changing dynamical picture has been mapped out in the collision energy range of 0.3-1.2 kcal/mol for this reaction. Quantum dynamical calculations based on the XXZ surface suggest that the ground resonance on this potential is too high in comparison with the experimental results of the F + HD reaction. However, quantum scattering calculations on the FXZ surface can reproduce nearly quantitatively the resonance picture of the F + HD reaction observed in the experiment. It is clear that the dynamics of the F + HD reaction below the threshold was dominated by the ground resonance state. Furthermore, the forward scattering HF (nu' = 3) channel from the F + H 2 ( j = 0) reaction was investigated and was attributed mainly to a slow-down mechanism over the centrifugal exit barrier, with small contributions from a shape resonance mechanism in a narrow collision energy range. A striking effect of the reagent rotational excitation on resonance was also observed in F + H 2 ( j = 1), in comparison with F + H 2 ( j = 0). From these concerted experimental and theoretical studies, a clear physical picture of the reaction resonances in this benchmark reaction has emerged, providing a textbook example of dynamical resonances in elementary chemical reactions.

Abstract
The study of state-to-state dynamics of elementary bimolecular reactions has provided remarkable insights into chemical reactivity at the most fundamental level. This review covers exciting developments in this important field in the past decade. I focus on recent studies of quantum-state-resolved molecular-beam reactive-scattering studies of elementary chemical reactions, from triatomic to polyatomic systems. Researchers have made great advances in the fundamental understanding of many elementary chemical reactions through state-to-state dynamics studies. The strong interaction between theory and experiment has significantly enhanced our understanding of the dynamics of these reactions. I hope this review provides a glimpse of this exciting research field to both experts and beginners.

Abstract
Recent progress in the study of insertion reactions of hydrogen molecules with excited atoms is reviewed in this article. In particular, the dynamics of the reaction of O(1D), N(2D), C(1D), and S(1D) with H2 and its isotopomers, which have received a great deal of attention over the past decade, are examined in detail. All of these systems have in common the existence of several potential energy surfaces (PES) correlating with the reagents' states, and consequently, they can give rise to reaction following different adiabatic and nonadiabatic pathways. The main contribution, however, arises from their ground singlet PESs which feature the existence of deep wells with small or null barriers for insertion. Accordingly, these reactions proceed mainly via formation of relatively long-lived collision complexes and display an overall nearly statistical behavior. In spite of their similarities, the various reactions have peculiar characteristics caused by important differences of their respective PESs. The contribution of excited PES to the global reactivity, which has also become an important issue and a challenge both for theory and experiment, is also examined. The different theoretical approaches are discussed in the text, along with the experimental results obtained by a variety of techniques. The recent exact quantum treatments of these reactive systems together with the development of a rigorous statistical model have contributed to a very accurate description which in many cases matches very well the detailed measurements. The quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method has also provided a fairly accurate description of the reaction dynamics for these systems. In particular, the analysis in terms of collision times has yielded interesting clues about the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Full quantum state resolved scattering of the F atom reaction with H(2)(j=0) and H(2)(j=1) was investigated at the collision energies of 0.19 and 0.56 kcalmol. Dramatic difference between the dynamics for the F+H(2)(j=0,1) reactions at both collision energies have been observed. Forward scattering HF(v(')=2) products have been observed unambiguously for the F+H(2)(j=1) reaction at low collision energies, which was attributed to the Feshbach resonances. This study provides a unique case of reaction resonances involving a rotationally excited reagent.

Abstract
In this paper, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dynamics of the N(2D) + H2 insertion reaction at a collision energy of 15.9 kJ mol(-1). Product angular and velocity distributions have been obtained in crossed beam experiments and simulated by using the results of quantum mechanical (QM) scattering calculations on the accurate ab initio potential energy surface (PES) of Pederson et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 1999, 110, 9091). Since the QM calculations indicate that there is a significant coupling between the product angular and translational energy distributions, such a coupling has been explicitly included in the simulation of the experimental results. The very good agreement between experiment and QM calculations sustains the accuracy of the NH2 ab initio ground state PES. We also take the opportunity to compare the accurate QM differential cross sections with those obtained by two approximate methods, namely, the widely used quasiclassical trajectory calculations and a rigorous statistical method based on the coupled-channel theory.

Abstract
In this paper we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dynamics of the insertion reaction C((1)D)+D(2) at 15.5 kJ mol(-1) collision energy. Product angular and velocity distributions have been obtained in crossed beam experiments and quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) and rigorous statistical calculations have been performed on the recent and accurate ab initio potential energy surface of Bussery-Honvault, Honvault, and Launay at the energy of the experiment. The molecular-beam results have been simulated using the theoretical calculations. Good agreement between experiment and both QCT and statistical predictions is found.
