Dispersion anomalies in bilayer cuprates and the odd symmetry of the magnetic resonance

Bosonic excitation spectra of superconductingBi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δandYBa2Cu3O6+xextracted from scanning tunneling spectra

A detailed interpretation of scanning tunneling spectra obtained on unconventional superconductors enables one to gain information on the pairing boson. Decisive for this approach are inelastic tunneling events. Due to the lack of momentum conservation in tunneling from or to the sharp tip, those are enhanced in the geometry of a scanning tunneling microscope compared to planar tunnel junctions. This work extends the method of obtaining the bosonic excitation spectrum by deconvolution from tunneling spectra to nodald-wave superconductors. In particular, scanning tunneling spectra of slightly underdopedBi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δwith aTcof 82 K and optimally dopedYBa2Cu3O6+xwith aTcof 92 K reveal a resonance mode in their bosonic excitation spectrum atΩres≈63 meVandΩres≈61 meVrespectively. In both cases, the overall shape of the bosonic excitation spectrum is indicative of predominant spin scattering with a resonant mode atΩres<2Δand overdamped spin fluctuations for energies larger than 2Δ. To perform the deconvolution of the experimental data, we implemented an efficient iterative algorithm that significantly enhances the reliability of our analysis.

Nodeless superconducting phase arising from a strong (π, π) antiferromagnetic phase in the infinite-layer electron-doped Sr(1-x)La(x)CuO2 compound

The asymmetry between electron and hole doping remains one of the central issues in high-temperature cuprate superconductivity, but our understanding of the electron-doped cuprates has been hampered by apparent discrepancies between the only two known families: Re(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and A(1-x)La(x)CuO2. Here we report in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of epitaxially stabilized Sr(1-x)La(x)CuO2 thin films synthesized by oxide molecular-beam epitaxy. Our results reveal a strong coupling between electrons and (π, π) antiferromagnetism that induces a Fermi surface reconstruction which pushes the nodal states below the Fermi level. This removes the hole pocket near (π/2, π/2), realizing nodeless superconductivity without requiring a change in the symmetry of the order parameter and providing a universal understanding of all electron-doped cuprates.

Correlation-induced Suppression of Bilayer Splitting in High-Tc Cuprates: A Variational Cluster Approach

We carry out a theoretical study of the bilayer single-band Hubbard model in the undoped and in the superconducting phases by means of the variational cluster approach. In particular, we focus on the splitting between the "bonding" and "antibonding" bands induced by the interlayer hopping, as well as its interplay with strong correlation effects. We find that the splitting is considerably suppressed in both the normal and superconducting phases, in qualitative agreement with experiments on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ . In addition, in the superconducting phase, the shape of the splitting in k space is modified by correlations.

Theoretical investigation of the four-layered self-doped high-Tc superconductors: evidence of the pair tunneling effect

Based on a four-layered self-doped t-J type model and the slave-boson mean-field approach, we study theoretically the superconductivity in the electron-doped and hole-doped layers. The neighbor layers are coupled through both the single electron interlayer hopping and pair tunneling effect. The superconducting gap magnitude for the electron-doped band is nearly twice that of the hole-doped one, which contrasts with our previous understanding of the electron-hole asymmetry in high-T(c) superconductors but is consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in four-layered materials Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2. Our results propose that the pair tunneling effect is important to examine the multilayered superconducting materials.

Superconducting coherence peak in the electronic excitations of a single-layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta cuprate superconductor

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study is reported on a high quality optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta high-Tc superconductor. In the antinodal region with a maximal d-wave gap, the symbolic superconducting coherence peak, which has been widely observed in multi-CuO2-layer cuprate superconductors, is unambiguously observed in a single-layer system. The associated peak-dip separation is just about 19 meV, which is much smaller than its counterparts in multilayered compounds, but correlates with the energy scales of spin excitations in single-layer cuprates.

Parity of the pairing bosons in a high-temperature Pb-Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 bilayer superconductor by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We report the observation of a novel effect in the bilayer Pb-Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Pb-Bi2212) high-T(c) superconductor by means of angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized excitation. Different scattering rates, determined as a function of energy separately for the bonding and antibonding copper-oxygen bands, strongly imply that the dominating scattering channel is odd with respect to layer exchange within a bilayer. This is inconsistent with a phonon-mediated scattering and favors the participation of the odd collective spin excitations in the scattering mechanism in near-nodal regions of the k space, suggesting a magnetic nature of the pairing mediator.

Gaplike excitations in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 studied by resonant Raman scattering

We report on the response of the electronic continuum from inelastic light-scattering experiments over an extended energy range between 1.970 and 4.504 eV in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. The formation of a substantial Raman feature at shifts below twice the superconducting gap as well as the additional weight above this energy are found to be strongly dependent on the incident photon energy. For excitation wavelengths observed in ultraviolet, we find an enhancement of the integrated spectral weight below T(c). The resulting composite feature shows three distinct resonances at 2.5, 3.3, and 3.8 eV. We strongly suggest that the superconductivity-induced changes are the result of both the opening of a superconducting gap and the appearance of a collective mode.

Resonant magnetic excitations at high energy in superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.85

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.85 provides evidence of new resonant magnetic features, in addition to the well-known resonant mode at 41 meV: (i) a commensurate magnetic resonance peak at 53 meV with an even symmetry under exchange of two adjacent CuO2 layers, and (ii) high-energy incommensurate resonant spin excitations whose spectral weight is around 54 meV. The locus and the spectral weight of these modes provides unrevealed insight about the momentum shape of the electron-hole spin-flip continuum of d-wave superconductors.

Dichotomy between nodal and antinodal quasiparticles in underdoped (La2-xSrx)CuO4 superconductors

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on an underdoped (La(2-x)Srx)CuO4 system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the (pi/2,pi/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the (pi,0) antinodal point along the underlying "Fermi surface." It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi surface near the antinodes.

Doping dependence of the mass enhancement in (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CaCu2O8 at the antinodal point in the superconducting and normal states

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to study the mass renormalization of the charge carriers in the high-T(c) superconductor (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CaCu2O8 in the vicinity of the (pi,0) point in the superconducting and the normal states. Using matrix element effects at different photon energies and due to a high momentum and energy resolution the bonding and the antibonding bands could be separated in the whole dopant range. A huge coupling to a bosonic collective mode is observed below T(c) for both bands, in particular, for the underdoped case. Above T(c), a weaker coupling to a continuous spectrum of modes is detected.

Anomalous enhancement of the coupling to the magnetic resonance mode in underdoped Pb-Bi2212

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission with variable excitation energies is used to disentangle bilayer splitting effects and intrinsic (self-energy) effects in the electronic spectral function near the (pi,0) point of differently doped (Pb,Bi)(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta). In contrast to overdoped samples, where intrinsic effects at the (pi,0) point are virtually absent, we find in underdoped samples intrinsic effects in the superconducting-state (pi,0) spectra of the antibonding band. This intrinsic effect is present only below the critical temperature and weakens considerably with doping. Our results give strong support for models which involve a strong coupling of electronic excitations with the resonance mode seen in inelastic neutron scattering experiments.
