Drastic facilitation of the onset of global chaos

Fractal patterns in the parameter space of a bistable Duffing oscillator

We study the dissipative bistable Duffing oscillator with equal energy wells and observe fractal patterns in the parameter space of driving frequency, forcing amplitude, and damping ratio. Our numerical investigation reveals the Hausdorff fractal dimension of the boundaries that separate the oscillator's intrawell and interwell behaviors. Furthermore, we categorize the interwell behaviors as three steady-state types: switching, reverting, and vacillating. While fractal patterns in the phase space are well known and heavily studied, our results point to another research direction about fractal patterns in the parameter space. Another implication of this study is that the vibration of a continuous bistable system modeled using a single-mode approximation also manifests fractal patterns in the parameter space. In addition, our findings can guide the design of next-generation bistable and multistable mechanical metamaterials.

Detection of barriers to cross-jet Lagrangian transport and its destruction in a meandering flow

Cross-jet transport of passive scalars in a kinematic model of the meandering laminar two-dimensional incompressible flow which is known to produce chaotic mixing is studied. We develop a method for detecting barriers to cross-jet transport in the phase space which is a physical space for our model. Using tools from the theory of nontwist maps, we construct a central invariant curve and compute its characteristics that may serve as good indicators of the existence of a central transport barrier, its strength, and topology. Computing fractal dimension, length, and winding number of that curve in the parameter space, we study in detail the change in its geometry and its destruction that is caused by local bifurcations and a global bifurcation known as reconnection of separatrices of resonances. Scenarios of reconnection are different for odd and even resonances. The central invariant curves with rational and irrational (noble) values of winding numbers are arranged into hierarchical series which are described in terms of continued fractions. Destruction of central transport barrier is illustrated for two ways in the parameter space: when moving along resonant bifurcation curves with rational values of the winding number and along curves with noble (irrational) values.

Matching of separatrix map and resonant dynamics, with application to global chaos onset between separatrices

We have developed a general method for the description of separatrix chaos, based on the analysis of the separatrix map dynamics. Matching it with the resonant Hamiltonian analysis, we show that, for a given amplitude of perturbation, the maximum width of the chaotic layer in energy may be much larger than it was assumed before. We use the above method to explain the drastic facilitation of global chaos onset in time-periodically perturbed Hamiltonian systems possessing two or more separatrices, previously discovered [S. M. Soskin, O. M. Yevtushenko, and R. Mannella, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 174101 (2003)]. The theory well agrees with simulations. We also discuss generalizations and applications. The method may be generalized for single-separatrix cases. The facilitation of global chaos onset may be relevant to a variety of systems, e.g., optical lattices, magnetic and semiconductor superlattices, meandering flows in the ocean, and spinning pendulums. Apart from dynamical transport, it may facilitate noise-induced transitions and the stochastic web formation.

Divergence of the chaotic layer width and strong acceleration of the spatial chaotic transport in periodic systems driven by an adiabatic ac force

We show for the first time that a weak perturbation in a Hamiltonian system may lead to an arbitrarily wide chaotic layer and fast chaotic transport. This generic effect occurs in any spatially periodic Hamiltonian system subject to a sufficiently slow ac force. We explain it and develop an explicit theory for the layer width, verified in simulations. Chaotic spatial transport as well as applications to the diffusion of particles on surfaces, threshold devices, and others are discussed.
