When scanning tunneling microscopy gets the wrong adsorption site: H on Rh(100)

Reversal of atomic contrast in scanning probe microscopy on (111) metal surfaces

We study the origin of atomic contrast on Cu(111) and Pt(111) surfaces probed by a non-contact atomic force microscope and scanning tunnelling microscope. First-principles simulations of the interaction between the atoms of the scanning tip and those of the probed surface show a dependence of the resulting contrast on the tip-sample distance and reveal a close relation between contrast changes and relaxation of atomic positions in both the tip and the sample. Contrast reversion around the distance where the short-range attractive atomic force reaches its maximum is predicted for both types of microscopies. We also demonstrate a relation between the maximal attractive force in a F-z atomic force spectroscopy and the chemical identity of the apex atom on the imaging tip.

Spectroscopic manifestations of the Kondo effect on single adatoms

The present topical review focuses on recent advances concerning an intriguing phenomenon in condensed matter physics, the scattering of conduction electrons at the localized spin of a magnetic impurity: the Kondo effect. Spectroscopic signatures of this effect have been observed in the past by high-resolution photoemission which, however, has the drawback of averaging over a typical surface area of 1 mm(2). By combining the atomic-scale spatial resolution of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with an energy resolution of a few tens of µeV achievable nowadays in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and by exposing the magnetic adatom to external magnetic fields, our understanding of the interaction of a single magnetic impurity with the conduction electrons of the nonmagnetic host has been considerably deepened. New insight has emerged by taking advantage of quantum size effects in the metallic support and by decoupling the magnetic adatom from the supporting host metal, for instance by embedding it inside a molecule or by separating it by an ultrathin insulating film from the metal surface. In this way, Kondo resonances and Kondo temperatures can be tailored and manipulated by changing the local density of states of the environment. In the weak coupling limit between a Kondo impurity and a superconductor only a convolution of tip and sample DOS is observed while for strongly coupled systems midgap states appear, indicating superconducting pair breaking. Magnetic impurities with co-adsorbed hydrogen on metallic surfaces show pseudo-Kondo resonances owing to very low-energy vibrational excitations detected by inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. One of the most recent achievements in the field has been the clarification of the role of magnetic anisotropy in the Kondo effect for localized spin systems with a spin larger than S = 1/2.

Creating pseudo-Kondo resonances by field-induced diffusion of atomic hydrogen

In low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments a cerium adatom on Ag(100) possesses two discrete states with significantly different apparent heights. These atomic switches also exhibit a Kondo-like feature in spectroscopy experiments. By extensive theoretical simulations we find that this behavior is due to diffusion of hydrogen from the surface onto the Ce adatom in the presence of the STM tip field. The cerium adatom possesses vibrational modes of very low energy (3-4 meV) and very high efficiency (≥20%), which are due to the large changes of Ce states in the presence of hydrogen. The atomic vibrations lead to a Kondo-like feature at very low bias voltages.

Role of hydrogen in giant spin polarization observed on magnetic nanostructures

We demonstrate that the giant spin contrast observed by scanning tunneling microscopy for double-layer Coislands on Pt(111) is caused by adsorbates at the apex of the Cr-coated W tip. The most likely candidate, in ab initio simulations, is hydrogen. Here, the electron charge is highly polarized by the adjacent Cr layers. The hydrogen adsorption site is shown to change from hollow to on top due to the electric field at the tip apex, created by the tunnel voltage.

Diatomic molecular switches to enable the observation of very-low-energy vibrations

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we found that the coadsorption of atomic hydrogen to single transition-metal and rare-earth-metal atoms on a Ag(100) surface gives rise to surprising phenomena, a bias dependent switching from a large to a small apparent size of the diatomic molecules and a concomitant appearance of very low-energy vibrational features of 3 to 7 meV in the differential conductance spectra. These phenomena, which have until now escaped observation, may be of general relevance for low-temperature adsorption.

Unexpected Behavior of the Surface Composition of PtRh Alloys during Chemical Reaction

The changes in the surface composition of a Pt(50)Rh(50)(100) alloy due to an ongoing 2H(2) + O(2)-->2H(2)O chemical reaction have been studied in situ. Exploiting the high-energy resolution and surface sensitivity of synchrotron radiation core-level spectroscopy it was possible to monitor the population of the two transitions metals atoms at the gas-surface interface. Sequences of fast high-resolution core-level spectra of the Rh3d(5/2), Pt4f(7/2), and O1s core levels showed a continuous exchange of atoms between the first and subsurface layers. An unexpected Pt surface enrichement was found under slightly oxidizing conditions, opposite to what found in a highly oxidizing atmosphere.
