Magnon heat transport in doped La2CuO4

Electronic diffusion in a normal state of high-Tc cuprate YBa2Cu3O6+x

The bad metallic phase with resistivity above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit, which appears also in cuprate superconductors, was recently understood by cold atom and computer simulations of the Hubbard model via charge susceptibility and charge diffusion constant. However, since reliable simulations can be typically done only at temperatures above the experimental temperatures, the question for cuprate superconductors is still open. This paper addresses this question by resorting to heat transport, which allows for the estimate of electronic diffusion and it further combines it with the resistivity to estimate the charge susceptibility. The doping and temperature dependencies of diffusion constant and charge susceptibilities are shown and discussed for two samples of YBa2Cu3O6+x. Results indicate strongly incoherent transport, mean free path corresponding to the MIR limit for the underdoped sample at temperatures above ~200 K and significant effect of the charge susceptibility on the resistivity.

Magnonic contribution in thermal conductance of a nanostructure in the presence of magnon-phonon interaction

Using Green's function method, we study thermal transport properties of magnons transmitting through a magnetic nanowire at a certain temperature. In a small part of the nanowire in the middle, we are supposed to have two types of local and nonlocal magnon-phonon interactions. The self-energies for this part due to the other parts of the wire are analytically derived. First, we calculate the phonon mode-dependent magnon transmission coefficient in the classical canonical ensemble. Then, by taking an average of the phonon modes, we obtain the total magnon transmission coefficient and use it for computing magnon thermal conductance. We use the model to investigate four configurations of magnetic nanowires composed of ferromagnetic and/or antiferromagnetic parts. The results show that, when the scattering region has an antiferromagnetic alignment, the magnons transfer in the structure more weakly than for ferromagnetic alignment. There is a phonon-assisted mechanism for tunneling of magnons which are transmitted through the gap or between magnon quasifrequencies of the scattering region. Generally, in the same values for local and nonlocal strengths of magnon-phonon interaction, the nonlocal one has a greater effect on the magnonic thermal transport properties. We found the fitting functions in order to relate the macroscopic quantities of the magnon transmission coefficient and thermal conductivity to microscopic parameters of the strengths of the local and nonlocal magnon-phonon interaction.

Thermal Hall conductivity in the cuprate Mott insulators Nd2CuO4 and Sr2CuO2Cl2

The heat carriers responsible for the unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity of the cuprate Mott insulator La₂CuO₄ were recently shown to be phonons. However, the mechanism by which phonons in cuprates acquire chirality in a magnetic field is still unknown. Here, we report a similar thermal Hall conductivity in two cuprate Mott insulators with significantly different crystal structures and magnetic orders – Nd₂CuO₄ and Sr₂CuO₂Cl₂ – and show that two potential mechanisms can be excluded – the scattering of phonons by rare-earth impurities and by structural domains. Our comparative study further reveals that orthorhombicity, apical oxygens, the tilting of oxygen octahedra and the canting of spins out of the CuO₂ planes are not essential to the mechanism of chirality. Our findings point to a chiral mechanism coming from a coupling of acoustic phonons to the intrinsic excitations of the CuO₂ planes.

What makes the phonons in cuprates become chiral, as measured by their thermal Hall effect, is an unresolved question. Here, the authors rule out two extrinsic mechanisms and argue that chirality comes from a coupling of acoustic phonons to the intrinsic excitations of the CuO₂ planes.

Coupling of Spinons with Defects and Phonons in the Spin Chain Compound Ca_{2}CuO_{3}

Extrinsic spinon scattering by defects and phonons instead of intrinsic spinon-spinon coupling is responsible for resistive magnetic heat transport in one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnets. Here we report an investigation of the elusive extrinsic effect in the 1D Heisenberg S=1/2 spin chain compound Ca_{2}CuO_{3}, where the defect concentration is determined from the measured specific heat and first-principles calculations are used to separate the lattice component of the measured thermal conductivity to isolate a large magnetic contribution (κ_{m}). The obtained temperature-dependent spinon-defect and spinon-phonon mean free paths can enable a quantitative understanding of both κ_{m} and the spinon-induced spin Seebeck effect.

Unusual Phonon Heat Transport in α-RuCl_{3}: Strong Spin-Phonon Scattering and Field-Induced Spin Gap

The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. Here we unveil the highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity κ of α-RuCl_{3}, a prime candidate for realizing such physics: beyond a magnetic field of B_{c}≈7.5  T, κ increases by about one order of magnitude, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field dependence unambiguously to be the result of severe scattering of phonons off putative Kitaev-Heisenberg excitations in combination with a drastic field-induced change of the magnetic excitation spectrum. In particular, an unexpected, large energy gap arises, which increases linearly with the magnetic field, reaching remarkable ℏω_{0}/k_{B}≈50  K at 18 T.

Thermal Transport Signatures of Broken-Symmetry Phases in Graphene

In the half filled zero-energy Landau level of bilayer graphene, competing phases with spontaneously broken symmetries and an intriguing quantum critical behavior have been predicted. Here we investigate signatures of these broken-symmetry phases in thermal transport measurements. To this end, we calculate the spectrum of spin and valley waves in the ν=0 quantum Hall state of bilayer graphene. The presence of Goldstone modes enables heat transport even at low temperatures, which can serve as compelling evidence for spontaneous symmetry breaking. By varying external electric and magnetic fields, it is possible to determine the nature of the symmetry breaking. Temperature-dependent measurements may yield additional information about gapped modes.

Magnons and Phonons Optically Driven out of Local Equilibrium in a Magnetic Insulator

The coupling and possible nonequilibrium between magnons and other energy carriers have been used to explain several recently discovered thermally driven spin transport and energy conversion phenomena. Here, we report experiments in which local nonequilibrium between magnons and phonons in a single crystalline bulk magnetic insulator, Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12}, has been created optically within a focused laser spot and probed directly via micro-Brillouin light scattering. Through analyzing the deviation in the magnon number density from the local equilibrium value, we obtain the diffusion length of thermal magnons. By explicitly establishing and observing local nonequilibrium between magnons and phonons, our studies represent an important step toward a quantitative understanding of various spin-heat coupling phenomena.

Quantum electric-dipole liquid on a triangular lattice

Geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations may prohibit the formation of long-range ordering even at the lowest temperature, and therefore liquid-like ground states could be expected. A good example is the quantum spin liquid in frustrated magnets. Geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations can happen beyond magnetic systems. Here we propose that quantum electric-dipole liquids, analogues of quantum spin liquids, could emerge in frustrated dielectrics where antiferroelectrically coupled electric dipoles reside on a triangular lattice. The quantum paraelectric hexaferrite BaFe₁₂O₁₉ with geometric frustration represents a promising candidate for the proposed electric-dipole liquid. We present a series of experimental lines of evidence, including dielectric permittivity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity measured down to 66 mK, to reveal the existence of an unusual liquid-like quantum phase in BaFe₁₂O₁₉, characterized by itinerant low-energy excitations with a small gap. The possible quantum liquids of electric dipoles in frustrated dielectrics open up a fresh playground for fundamental physics.

In magnetic materials, geometry-defined competing interactions between spins combined with quantum fluctuations can present the possibility of quantum liquid states which do not order even as 0K is approached. Here, the authors present an analogue built from electric dipoles on a triangular lattice.

Magnetostriction and Magnetostructural Domains in Antiferromagnetic YBa2Cu3O6

We use high-resolution neutron Larmor diffraction and capacitative dilatometry to investigate spontaneous and forced magnetostriction in undoped, antiferromagnetic YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0}, the parent compound of a prominent family of high-temperature superconductors. Upon cooling below the Néel temperature T_{N}=420  K, Larmor diffraction reveals the formation of magnetostructural domains of characteristic size ∼240  nm. In the antiferromagnetic state, dilatometry reveals a minute (4×10^{-6}) orthorhombic distortion of the crystal lattice in external magnetic fields. We attribute these observations to exchange striction and spin-orbit coupling induced magnetostriction, respectively, and show that they have an important influence on the thermal and charge transport properties of undoped and lightly doped cuprates.

Domain wall dynamics in integrable and chaotic spin-1/2 chains

We study the time evolution of correlation functions, spin current, and local magnetization in an isolated spin-1/2 chain initially prepared in a sharp domain wall state. The results are compared with the level of spatial delocalization of the eigenstates of the system which is measured using the inverse participation ratio. Both integrable and nonintegrable regimes are considered. Nonintegrability is introduced to the integrable Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor couplings by adding a single-site impurity field or by adding next-nearest-neighbor couplings. A monotonic correspondence between the enhancement of the level of delocalization, spin current, and magnetization dynamics occurs in the integrable domain. This correspondence is, however, lost for chaotic models with weak Ising interactions.

Transport control in low-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems

We analyze transport of local magnetization and develop schemes to control transport behavior in finite spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains and spin-1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladders at zero temperature. By adjusting parameters in the Hamiltonians, these quantum systems may show both integrable and chaotic limits. We provide examples of chaotic systems leading to diffusive and to ballistic transport. In addition, methods of coherent quantum control to induce a transition from diffusive to ballistic transport are proposed.

Linear temperature dependence of the magnetic heat conductivity in CaCu2O3

We present experimental results for the thermal conductivity kappa of the pseudo-two-leg ladder material CaCu2O3. The strong buckling of the ladder rungs renders this material a good approximation to a S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Despite a strong suppression of the thermal conductivity of this material in all crystal directions due to inherent disorder, we find a dominant magnetic contribution kappa mag along the chain direction. kappa mag is linear in temperature, resembling the low-temperature limit of the thermal Drude weight D th of the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. The comparison of kappamag and Dth yields a magnetic mean-free path of l mag approximately 22+/-5 A, in good agreement with magnetic measurements.

Spin thermal conductivity of the haldane chain compound Y(2)BaNiO(5)

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the spin S=1 chain compound Y(2)BaNiO(5). Analyzing the anisotropy of the thermal transport allows us to identify a definite spin-mediated thermal conductivity kappa(s) along the chain direction. The calculated spin-related energy diffusion constant D(E)(T) shows a broad peak around 120 K. Close to room temperature, D(E)(T) approaches the theoretically predicted high-temperature value, while scattering of spin excitations by magnetic impurities seems to be the major limiting factor of kappa(s) at low temperature.

Ballistic magnon transport and phonon scattering in the antiferromagnet Nd2CuO4

The thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnet Nd2CuO4 was measured down to 50 mK. Using the spin-flop transition to switch on and off the acoustic Nd magnons, we can reliably separate the magnon and phonon contributions to heat transport. We find that magnons travel ballistically below 0.5 K, with a thermal conductivity growing as T3, from which we extract their velocity. We show that the rate of scattering of acoustic magnons by phonons grows as T3, and the scattering of phonons by magnons peaks at twice the average Nd magnon frequency.

Thermal conductivity of quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-chain materials

We study heat transport in quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain systems by considering the model of one-dimensional bosonic spin excitations interacting with three-dimensional phonons and impurities in the limit of weak spin-lattice coupling and fast spin excitations. A combined effect of the phonon and impurity scatterings yields the following spin-boson thermal conductivity behavior: kappa(s) proportional to T2 at low, kappa(s) proportional to T-1 at intermediate, and kappa(s)= const at higher temperatures. Our results agree well with the existing experimental data for Sr2CuO3. We predict an unusual dependence on the impurity concentration for a number of observables and propose further experiments.

Magnon-hole scattering and charge order in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41

The magnon thermal conductivity kappa(mag) of the hole-doped spin ladders in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 has been investigated at low doping levels x. The analysis of kappa(mag) reveals a strong doping and temperature dependence of the magnon mean free path l(mag), which is a local probe for the interaction of magnons with the doped holes in the ladders. In particular, this novel approach to studying charge degrees of freedom via spin excitations shows that charge ordering of the holes in the ladders leads to a freezing out of magnon-hole scattering processes.

Thermal conductivity of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4 single crystals and signatures of stripes in an electron-doped cuprate

It was recently demonstrated that the anisotropic phonon heat transport behavior is a good probe of the stripe formation in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) (LSCO) [Phys. Rev. B 67, 104503 (2003)]]. Using this probe, we examined an electron-doped cuprate Pr(1.3-x)La(0.7)Ce(x)CuO(4) (PLCCO) and found that essentially the same features as those in LSCO are observed. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity rho(ab) of lightly doped PLCCO shows metallic behavior (drho(ab)/dT>0) in the Néel ordered state with a mobility comparable to that in LSCO. It is discussed that these peculiar properties in common with LSCO signify the existence of stripes in electron-doped cuprates.

In-plane thermal conductivity of Nd2CuO4: evidence for magnon heat transport

We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity (kappa(ab)) of high-quality monocrystalline Nd2CuO4. Isothermal measurements of the field dependence of kappa(ab) at low temperatures (2 K<or=T<or=5 K) show no change in kappa(ab) below a critical magnetic field H(c) (H(c) approximately 4.5 T for H parallel [100]) and H(c) approximately 2.5 T for H approximately parallel [110]). Above H(c), kappa(ab) more than doubles as H is increased to 9 T. At H(c), there is a transition from a noncollinear to a collinear arrangement of the Nd and Cu spins and a collapse of the gap, Delta, in an acoustic magnon branch at k=0. Closure of this gap appears to allow the conduction of substantial amounts of heat by acoustic magnons.
