Critical current of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) low-angle grain boundaries

Comparison of growth texture in round Bi2212 and flat Bi2223 wires and its relation to high critical current density development

Why Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)Ox (Bi2212) allows high critical current density Jc in round wires rather than only in the anisotropic tape form demanded by all other high temperature superconductors is important for future magnet applications. Here we compare the local texture of state-of-the-art Bi2212 and Bi2223 ((Bi,Pb)(2)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(10)), finding that round wire Bi2212 generates a dominant a-axis growth texture that also enforces a local biaxial texture (FWHM <15°) while simultaneously allowing the c-axes of its polycrystals to rotate azimuthally along and about the filament axis so as to generate macroscopically isotropic behavior. By contrast Bi2223 shows only a uniaxial (FWHM <15°) c-axis texture perpendicular to the tape plane without any in-plane texture. Consistent with these observations, a marked, field-increasing, field-decreasing J(c)(H) hysteresis characteristic of weak-linked systems appears in Bi2223 but is absent in Bi2212 round wire. Growth-induced texture on cooling from the melt step of the Bi2212 J(c) optimization process appears to be the key step in generating this highly desirable microstructure.

High intergrain critical current density in fine-grain (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 wires and bulks

The K- and Co-doped BaFe(2)As(2) (Ba-122) superconducting compounds are potentially useful for applications because they have upper critical fields (H(c2)) of well over 50 T, H(c2) anisotropy γ < 2and thin-film critical current densities J(c) exceeding 1 MA cm(-2) (refs 1-4) at 4.2 K. However, thin-film bicrystals of Co-doped Ba-122 clearly exhibit weak link behaviour for [001] tilt misorientations of more than about 5°, suggesting that textured substrates would be needed for applications, as in the cuprates. Here we present a contrary and very much more positive result in which untextured polycrystalline (Ba(0.6)K(0.4))Fe(2)As(2) bulks and round wires with high grain boundary density have transport critical current densities well over 0.1 MA cm(-2) (self-field, 4.2 K), more than 10 times higher than that of any other round untextured ferropnictide wire and 4-5 times higher than the best textured flat wire. The enhanced grain connectivity is ascribed to their much improved phase purity and to the enhanced vortex stiffness of this low-anisotropy compound (γ~1-2) when compared with YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-x) (γ~5).

Vortex breaking and cutting in type II superconductors

In technological superconductors, the Lorentz force on the flux vortices is opposed by inhomogeneous pinning and so the critical current may be controlled by a combination of vortex entanglement, cutting, and cross-joining. To understand the roles of these processes we report measurements of structures in which a weak pinning layer is sandwiched between two strongly pinning leads. Quantitative modeling of the results demonstrates that in such systems the critical current is limited by the deformation of individual vortices and not by subsequent cross-joining processes.

Crossover between channeling and pinning at twin boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7 thin films

The critical current (Jc) of highly twinned YBa2Cu3O7 films has been measured as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and angle. For much of the parameter space we observe a strong suppression of Jc for fields in the twin boundary (TB) directions; this is quantitatively modeled as flux-cutting-mediated vortex channeling. For certain temperatures and fields a crossover occurs to a regime in which channeling is blocked and the TBs act as planar pinning centers so that TB pinning enhances the overall Jc. In this regime, intrinsic pinning along the TBs is comparable to that between the twins.

Intrinsic pinning of vorticity by domain walls of l texture in superfluid 3He-A

We present the first observation of substantial persistent flow in superfluid 3He-A in thick simply connected slabs in a zero magnetic field, but only in l textures with domain walls. The flow is induced in a rotating cryostat using a torsional oscillator as a probe. The hysteretic dependences of the trapped vorticity on the maximal angular velocity of rotation are fairly universal for different densities of domain walls and slab thicknesses. A model of a critical state set by either the critical velocity for vortex nucleation or pinning strength explains all observations.
