Topological optomechanically induced transparency

The interaction of optical and mechanical degrees of freedom can lead to several interesting effects. A prominent example is the phenomenon of optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT), in which mechanical movements induce a narrow transparency window in the spectrum of an optical mode. In this Letter, we demonstrate the relevance of optomechanical topological insulators for achieving OMIT. More specifically, we show that the strong interaction between optical and mechanical edge modes of a one-dimensional topological optomechanical crystal can render the system transparent within a very narrow frequency range. Since the topology of a system cannot be changed by slight to moderate levels of disorder, the achieved transparency is robust against geometrical perturbations. This is in sharp contrast to trivial OMIT which has a strong dependency on the geometry of the optomechanical system. Our findings hold promise for a wide range of applications such as filtering, signal processing, and slow-light devices.

Indistinguishable photons from independent semiconductor nanostructures

We demonstrate quantum interference between photons generated by the radiative decay processes of excitons that are bound to isolated fluorine donor impurities in ZnSe/ZnMgSe quantum-well nanostructures. The ability to generate single photons from these devices is confirmed by autocorrelation experiments, and the indistinguishability of photons emitted from two independent nanostructures is confirmed via a Hong-Ou-Mandel dip. These results indicate that donor impurities in appropriately engineered semiconductor structures can portray atomlike homogeneity and coherence properties, potentially enabling scalable technologies for future large-scale optical quantum computers and quantum communication networks.

Experimentally feasible quantum erasure-correcting code for continuous variables

We devise a scheme that protects quantum coherent states of light from probabilistic losses, thus achieving the first continuous-variable quantum erasure-correcting code. If the occurrence of erasures can be probed, then the decoder enables, in principle, a perfect recovery of the original light states. Otherwise, if supplemented with postselection based on homodyne detection, this code can be turned into an efficient erasure-filtration scheme. The experimental feasibility of the proposed protocol is carefully addressed.

Loss-tolerant optical qubits

We present a linear optics quantum computation scheme that employs a new encoding approach that incrementally adds qubits and is tolerant to photon loss errors. The scheme employs a circuit model but uses techniques from cluster-state computation and achieves comparable resource usage. To illustrate our techniques we describe a quantum memory which is fault tolerant to photon loss.
