Energy relaxation time between macroscopic quantum levels in a superconducting persistent-current qubit

Supercurrent switch in π topological junctions based upon a narrow quantum spin Hall insulator

The narrow quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator is characterized by interedge coupling, which could feature exotic transport phenomena, and thus serves as the key element for topological superconducting electronic devices. Herein, we theoretically explore possible Josephson π states in a QSH insulator strip touching on two s-wave superconductors in the presence of the interedge coupling. It is shown that the interedge coupling could give rise to a 0 - π transition modulated by the gate voltage, originating from an additional π phase difference caused by the interedge backscattering. The 0 - π transition in turn can manifest the helical spin texture of the edge states. A considerable residual value of the supercurrent at the 0 - π transition point is always exhibited, suggesting a very efficient performance of the device as a supercurrent switch. Moreover, the region of coexisting 0 and π states is found fairly large, which can be used to improve accuracy in the design of a π superconducting quantum interference device.

Fidelity and quantum chaos in the mesoscopic device for the josephson flux qubit

We show that the three-junction SQUID device designed for the Josephson flux qubit can be used to study the dynamics of quantum chaos when operated at high energies. We determine the parameter region where the system is classically chaotic. We calculate numerically the fidelity or Loschmidt echo (LE) in the quantum dynamics under perturbations in the magnetic field and in the critical currents, and study different regimes of the LE. We discuss how the LE could be observed experimentally considering both the preparation of the initial state and the measurement procedure.

Optical selection rules and phase-dependent adiabatic state control in a superconducting quantum circuit

We analyze the optical selection rules of the microwave-assisted transitions in a flux qubit superconducting quantum circuit (SQC). We show that the parities of the states relevant to the superconducting phase in the SQC are well defined when the external magnetic flux phi(e) = phi(0)/2; then the selection rules are the same as the ones for the electric-dipole transitions in usual atoms. When phi(e) does not = phi(0)/2, the symmetry of the potential of the artificial "atom" is broken, a so-called delta-type "cyclic" three-level atom is formed, where one- and two-photon processes can coexist. We study how the population of these three states can be selectively transferred by adiabatically controlling the electromagnetic field pulses. Different from lambda-type atoms, the adiabatic population transfer in our three-level delta atom can be controlled not only by the amplitudes but also by the phases of the pluses.

Macroscopic tunnel splittings in superconducting phase qubits

Prototype Josephson-junction based qubit coherence times are too short for quantum computing. Recent experiments probing superconducting phase qubits have revealed previously unseen fine splittings in the transition energy spectra. These splittings have been attributed to new microscopic degrees of freedom (microresonators), a previously unknown source of decoherence. We show that macroscopic resonant tunneling in the extremely asymmetric double-well potential of the phase qubit can have observational consequences that are strikingly similar to the observed data.

Probing decoherence with electromagnetically induced transparency in superconductive quantum circuits

Superconductive quantum circuits comprise quantized energy levels that may be coupled via microwave electromagnetic fields. Described in this way, one may draw a close analogy to atoms with internal (electronic) levels coupled by laser light fields. In this Letter, we present a superconductive analog to electromagnetically induced transparency that utilizes superconductive quantum circuit designs of present day experimental consideration. We discuss how a superconductive analog to electromagnetically induced transparency can be used to establish macroscopic coherence in such systems and, thereby, be utilized as a sensitive probe of decoherence.
