Direct observation of high-temperature polaronic behavior in colossal magnetoresistive manganites

Strain-effected physical properties of ferromagnetic insulating La0.88Sr0.12MnO3 thin films

The functional perovskite La_1−xSr_xMnO₃ (LSMO) possesses various exotic phases owing to competing physical parameters and internal degrees of freedom. In particular, the nature of the ferromagnetic insulating phase (FMI) has not been adequately explored, resulting in a limited understanding of the relationship between crystal structure and magnetism. To investigate this structure–property relationship, epitaxial La_0.88Sr_0.12MnO₃ thin films were grown on two different substrates, (001) SrTiO₃ and (001) (LaAlO₃)_0.3(Sr₂AlTaO₆)_0.7, by pulsed laser deposition. Element-specific and surface-sensitive techniques were applied in conjunction with bulk magnetometry to investigate the inextricable link between the structures and magnetic properties of the films and the effects of tuning the strain. The results unambiguously demonstrate that structure–property relationship of a FMI LSMO tuned by strain has a crucial role for manipulating the properties in the FMI regime.

Band filling effect on polaron localization in La1-x(Ca(y)Sr1-y)xMnO3 manganites

We report on a ìSR and 55 Mn NMR investigation of the magnetic order parameter as a function of temperature in the optimally doped La(5/8)(CaySr(1.y))(3/8)MnO3 and in the underdoped La1.xSrxMnO3 and La1.xCaxMnO3 metallic manganite families. The study is aimed at unravelling the effect of lattice distortions, implicitly controlled by the Ca-Sr isoelectronic substitution, from that of hole doping x on the Curie temperature TC and the order of the magnetic transition. At optimal doping, the transitions are second order at all y values, including the y = 1 (La(5/8)Ca(3/8)MnO3) end member. By contrast, they are first order in the underdoped samples, which show a finite (truncated) order parameter at the Curie point, including La(0.75)Sr(0.25)MnO3 whose TC is much higher than that of La(5/8)Ca(3/8)MnO3. The order parameter curves, on the other hand, exhibit a very minor dependence on x, if truncation is excepted. This suggests that the effective exchange interaction between Mn ions is essentially governed by local distortions, in agreement with the original double-exchange model, while truncation is primarily, if not entirely, an effect of under- or over-doping. A phase diagram, separating in the x.y plane polaron-driven first order transitions from regular second order transitions governed by critical fluctuations, is proposed for the La(1.x)(CaySr(1.y))xMnO3 system.

Size-induced metallic state in nanoparticles of ferromagnetic insulating Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3

A detailed investigation of the electronic- and magneto-transport properties of Nd(0.8)Sr(0.2)MnO(3) with the variation of grain size (down to 42 nm) is presented here. Interestingly, we observe that the ferromagnetic insulating state is suppressed and a metallic state is stabilized as the grain size of the sample is reduced. As a result, a metal-insulator transition is observed in this low doped manganite which is insulating in nature in its bulk form. Destabilization of polaronic order in the ferromagnetic insulating state due to enhanced surface disorder on grain size reduction is attributed to this effect. A phenomenological model is proposed to represent the concept of destabilization of polaron formation in the surface region of the nanograins. Resistivity and magnetoresistance data are carefully analysed employing different suitable models. Electrical third harmonic resistance is measured to directly probe the electrical nonlinearity in the samples.

Electron spin resonance study of polycrystalline La(0.75)(Ca(x)Sr(1-x))(0.25)MnO(3) (x = 0, 0.45, 1)

Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of polycrystalline La(0.75)(Ca(x)Sr(1-x))(0.25)MnO(3) (x = 0, 0.45, 1) were studied within the temperature range 110 K≤T≤470 K. The temperature dependence of the ESR intensity for the samples is described by a thermally activated model in the paramagnetic regime. It is found that the activation energy in the orthorhombic phase is higher than that in the rhombohedral phase for La(0.75)(Ca(0.45)Sr(0.55))(0.25)MnO(3). It is suggested that a higher energy is required to destroy the correlated polarons due to the fact that correlated polarons only exist in the orthorhombic phase. This proposition is confirmed by the analysis of the ESR linewidth data, which can be well fitted by the model of adiabatic hopping motion of small polarons. In addition, it is found that, at a fixed temperature, the linewidth decreases with increasing Sr doping, which reveals that the structural tolerance factor has a significant effect on the linewidth.

Local structure of La1-xSrxCoO3 determined from EXAFS and neutron pair distribution function studies

The combined local structure techniques, extended x-ray absorption fine structure and neutron pair distribution function analysis, have been used for temperatures 4< or =T< or =330 K to rule out a large Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of the Co-O bond in La1-xSrxCoO3 for a significant fraction of Co sites (x< or =0.35), indicating few, if any, JT-active, singly occupied e_{g} Co sites exist.
