Relativistic Nonthermal Particle Acceleration in Two-Dimensional Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Magnetic reconnection, especially in the relativistic regime, provides an efficient mechanism for accelerating relativistic particles and thus offers an attractive physical explanation for nonthermal high-energy emission from various astrophysical sources. I present a simple analytical model that elucidates key physical processes responsible for reconnection-driven relativistic nonthermal particle acceleration (NTPA) in the large-system, plasmoid-dominated regime in two dimensions. The model aims to explain the numerically-observed dependencies of the power-law index p and high-energy cutoff γ_c of the resulting nonthermal particle energy spectrum f(γ) on the ambient plasma magnetization σ, and (for γ_c ) on the system size L. In this self-similar model, energetic particles are continuously accelerated by the out-of-plane reconnection electric field E _rec until they become magnetized by the reconnected magnetic field and eventually trapped in plasmoids large enough to confine them. The model also includes diffusive Fermi acceleration by particle bouncing off rapidly moving plasmoids. I argue that the balance between electric acceleration and magnetization controls the power-law index, while trapping in plasmoids governs the cutoff, thus tying the particle energy spectrum to the plasmoid distribution.

Development of an ion beam detector for the atomic beam probe diagnostic

The atomic beam probe diagnostic concept aims at measuring the edge magnetic field and through that edge current distribution in fusion plasmas by observing trajectories of an ion beam stemming from a diagnostic neutral beam. The diagnostic potentially has microsecond scale time resolution and can thus prove to be a powerful option to study fast changes in the edge plasma. A test detector has been installed on the COMPASS tokamak as an extension of the existing lithium beam diagnostic system. It employs a relatively simple concept of an array of conductive detection plates measuring the incident ion current, which is then amplified and converted to a voltage signal. The aim of the test detector is to experimentally examine the idea of the diagnostic and provide background data for design and installation of a final detector. Also, a numerical code based on the CUDA parallel computing platform has been developed for modeling lithium ion trajectories in the given COMPASS plasma discharges. We present the developments of the detector design and test measurements of the diagnostic performed both in a laboratory beam system and on the COMPASS tokamak.

Formation of hard power laws in the energetic particle spectra resulting from relativistic magnetic reconnection

Using fully kinetic simulations, we demonstrate that magnetic reconnection in relativistic plasmas is highly efficient at accelerating particles through a first-order Fermi process resulting from the curvature drift of particles in the direction of the electric field induced by the relativistic flows. This mechanism gives rise to the formation of hard power-law spectra in parameter regimes where the energy density in the reconnecting field exceeds the rest mass energy density σ ≡ B(2)/(4πnm(e)c(2))>1 and when the system size is sufficiently large. In the limit σ ≫ 1, the spectral index approaches p = 1 and most of the available energy is converted into nonthermal particles. A simple analytic model is proposed which explains these key features and predicts a general condition under which hard power-law spectra will be generated from magnetic reconnection.

Stochastic particle acceleration in multiple magnetic islands during reconnection

A nonthermal particle acceleration mechanism involving the interaction of a charged particle with multiple magnetic islands is proposed. The original Fermi acceleration model, which assumes randomly distributed magnetic clouds moving at random velocity V(c) in the interstellar medium, is known to be of second-order acceleration of O(V(c)/c)(2) owing to the combination of head-on and head-tail collisions. In this Letter, we reconsider the original Fermi model by introducing multiple magnetic islands during reconnection instead of magnetic clouds. We discuss that the energetic particles have a tendency to be distributed outside the magnetic islands, and they mainly interact with reconnection outflow jets. As a result, the acceleration efficiency becomes first order of O(V(A)/c), where V(A) and c are the Alfvén velocity and the speed of light, respectively.

Radiation-dominated relativistic current sheets

Relativistic current sheets (RCSs) feature plasma instabilities considered as the potential key to magnetic energy dissipation in Poynting-flux-dominated plasma flows. Kinetic plasma simulations show that the physical nature of RCS evolution changes in the presence of radiation losses: In the ultrarelativistic regime (i.e., magnetization parameter sigma=10(4) defined as the ratio of magnetic to plasma rest frame energy density), the combined effect of nonlinear RCS dynamics and synchrotron emission introduces a temperature anisotropy triggering the growth of the relativistic tearing mode. In contrast to previous studies of the RCS with sigma approximately 1, the relativistic tearing mode then prevails over the drift kink mode. The ultrarelativistic RCS shows a typical life cycle from radiation-induced collapse towards a radiation-quiescent phase with topology analogous to that introduced by Sweet and Parker.
