SO(4) theory of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Bechgaard salts

Stabilizing Fluctuating Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in Graphene via Induced Spin-Orbit Coupling

A recent experiment showed that a proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling enhances the spin-triplet superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene. Here, we show that, due to the nearly perfect spin rotation symmetry of graphene, the fluctuations of the spin orientation of the triplet order parameter suppress the superconducting transition to nearly zero temperature. Our analysis shows that both an Ising spin-orbit coupling and an in-plane magnetic field can eliminate these low-lying fluctuations and can greatly enhance the transition temperature, consistent with the recent experiment. Our model also suggests the possible existence of a phase at small anisotropy and magnetic field which exhibits quasilong-range ordered spin-singlet charge 4e superconductivity, even while the triplet 2e superconducting order only exhibits short-ranged correlations. Finally, we discuss relevant experimental signatures.

Accessing topological superconductivity via a combined STM and renormalization group analysis

The search for topological superconductors has recently become a key issue in condensed matter physics, because of their possible relevance to provide a platform for Majorana bound states, non-Abelian statistics, and quantum computing. Here we propose a new scheme which links as directly as possible the experimental search to a material-based microscopic theory for topological superconductivity. For this, the analysis of scanning tunnelling microscopy, which typically uses a phenomenological ansatz for the superconductor gap functions, is elevated to a theory, where a multi-orbital functional renormalization group analysis allows for an unbiased microscopic determination of the material-dependent pairing potentials. The combined approach is highlighted for paradigmatic hexagonal systems, such as doped graphene and water-intercalated sodium cobaltates, where lattice symmetry and electronic correlations yield a propensity for a chiral singlet topological superconductor. We demonstrate that our microscopic material-oriented procedure is necessary to uniquely resolve a topological superconductor state.

Upper critical magnetic field far above the paramagnetic pair-breaking limit of superconducting one-dimensional Li0:9Mo6O17 single crystals

The upper critical field H(c2) of purple bronze Li0:9Mo6O17 is found to exhibit a large anisotropy, in quantitative agreement with that expected from the observed electrical resistivity anisotropy. With the field aligned along the most conducting axis, H(c2) increases monotonically with decreasing temperature to a value 5 times larger than the estimated paramagnetic pair-breaking field. Theories for the enhancement of H(c2) invoking spin-orbit scattering or strong-coupling superconductivity are shown to be inadequate in explaining the observed behavior, suggesting that the pairing state in Li0:9Mo6O17 is unconventional and possibly spin triplet.

Superconducting state of the organic conductor (TMTSF)2ClO4

(TMTSF)2ClO4 is a quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor and superconductor with Tc=1.4 K, and one of at least two Bechgaard salts observed to have upper critical fields far exceeding the paramagnetic limit. Nevertheless, the 77Se NMR Knight shift at low fields reveals a decrease in spin susceptibility chi(s) consistent with singlet spin pairing. The field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at 100 mK exhibits a sharp crossover (or phase transition) at a field Hs approximately 15 kOe, to a regime where chi(s) is close to the normal state value, even though Hc2>> Hs.

Coexistence of triplet superconductivity and spin density waves

We discuss the possibility of the coexistence of spin density waves (antiferromagnetism) and triplet superconductivity as a particular example of a broad class of systems where the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity is important. We focus on the case of quasi-one-dimensional metals, where it is known that antiferromagnetism is in close proximity to triplet superconductivity in the pressure versus temperature phase diagram. Over a range of pressures, we propose an intermediate nonuniform phase consisting of antiferromagnetic and triplet superconducting orders. In the coexistence region, we propose a flop transition in the spin density wave order parameter vector, which affects the nature of the superconducting state and leads to the appearance of several new phases.

Resonant nernst effect in the metallic and field-induced spin density wave States of (TMTSF)2ClO4

We examine an unusual phenomenon where, in tilted magnetic fields near magic angles parallel to crystallographic planes, a "giant" resonant Nernst signal has been observed by Wu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 056601 (2003)] in the metallic state of an organic conducting Bechgaard salt. We show that this effect appears to be a general feature of these materials and is also present in the field-induced spin density wave phase with even larger amplitude. Our results place conditions on any model that treats the metallic state as a state with finite Cooper pairing.

Coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism probed by simultaneous nuclear magnetic resonance and electrical transport in (TMTSF)2PF6 system

We report simultaneous NMR and electrical transport experiments in the pressure range near the boundary of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) insulator and the metallic/superconducting (SC) phase in (TMTSF)2PF6. Measurements indicate a tricritical point separating a line of second-order SDW/metal transitions from a line of first-order SDW/metal(SC) transitions with coexistence of macroscopic regions of SDW and metal(SC) order, with little mutual interaction but strong hysteretic effects. NMR results quantify the fraction of each phase.
