Experimental evidence for exciton scaling effects in self-assembled molecular wires

Water-soluble J-type rosette nanotubes with giant molar ellipticity

A new self-assembling tricyclic module (×K1) featuring the Watson-Crick H-bonding arrays of guanine and cytosine fused to an internal pyridine ring was synthesized. When dissolved in water at room temperature, this module rapidly self-assembles into hexameric rosettes, which then stack to form J-type rosette nanotubes (RNTs) with increased inner/outer diameters and the largest molar ellipticity ever reported (4 × 10(6) deg·M(-1)·m(-1)). Using a combination of imaging and spectroscopic techniques we established the structure of ×K1-RNT and have shown that the extended π system of the self-assembling module resulted in a new family of J-type RNTs with enhanced intermodular electronic communication.

Supported lipid bilayer templated J-aggregate growth: role of stabilizing cation-pi interactions and headgroup packing

Controlling the self-assembly of molecules into specific structural motifs has important implications for the design of materials with specific optical properties. We report here the results of a correlated confocal fluorescence-atomic force microscopy (AFM) study of pseudoisocyanine iodide (PIC) self-assembly on supported lipid bilayers. Through judicious selection of bilayer headgroup packing and chemistry, two types of PIC J-aggregates, distinguishable by their absorbance spectra, and both exhibiting strong resonant fluorescence and bathochromic shifts in absorbance relative to the monomer, were isolated. Remarkably, selective templating can be achieved using different zwitterionic headgroups, producing J-aggregates that display a larger bathochromic shift than their solution counterparts. Our correlated confocal-AFM studies coupled with FT-IR spectroscopy suggested that zwitterionic phospholipids mediate J-aggregate formation through specific cation-pi interactions between PIC and the lipid headgroups with the PIC molecules oriented largely perpendicular to the bilayer normal. The existence of the two isoforms further suggests that bilayer headgroup packing plays a key role in controlling interchromophore organization and subsequent aggregate nucleation and growth.

Laser fabrication and spectroscopy of organic nanoparticles

In working with nanoparticles, researchers still face two fundamental challenges: how to fabricate the nanoparticles with controlled size and shape and how to characterize them. In this Account, we describe recent advances in laser technology both for the synthesis of organic nanoparticles and for their analysis by single nanoparticle spectroscopy. Laser ablation of organic microcrystalline powders in a poor solvent has opened new horizons for the synthesis of nanoparticles because the powder sample is converted directly into a stable colloidal solution without additives and chemicals. By tuning laser wavelength, pulse width, laser fluence, and total shot number, we could control the size and phase of the nanoparticles. For example, we describe nanoparticle formation of quinacridone, a well-known red pigment, in water. By modifying the length of time that the sample is excited by the laser, we could control the particle size (30-120 nm) for nanosecond excitation down to 13 nm for femtosecond irradiation. We prepared beta- and gamma-phase nanoparticles from the microcrystal with beta-phase by changing laser wavelength and fluence. We present further results from nanoparticles produced from several dyes, C(60), and an anticancer drug. All the prepared colloidal solutions were transparent and highly dispersive. Such materials could be used for nanoscale device development and for biomedical and environmental applications. We also demonstrated the utility of single nanoparticle spectroscopic analysis in the characterization of organic nanoparticles. The optical properties of these organic nanoparticles depend on their size within the range from a few tens to a few hundred nanometers. We observed perylene nanoscrystals using single-particle spectroscopy coupled with atomic force microscopy. Based on these experiments, we proposed empirical equations explaining their size-dependent fluorescence spectra. We attribute the size effect to the change in elastic properties of the nanocrystal. Based on the results for nanoparticles of polymers and other molecules with flexible conformations, we assert that size-dependent optical properties are common for organic nanoparticles. While "electronic confinement" explains the size-dependent properties of inorganic nanoparticles, we propose "structural confinement" as an analogous paradigm for organic nanoparticles.

Scaling and universality in the optics of disordered exciton chains

The joint probability distribution of exciton energies and transition dipole moments determines a variety of optical observables in disordered exciton systems. We demonstrate numerically that this distribution obeys a one-parameter scaling, originating from the fact that both the energy and the dipole moment are determined by the number of coherently bound molecules. A universal underlying distribution is found, which is identical for uncorrelated Gaussian disorder in the molecular transition energies or in the intermolecular transfer interactions. The universality breaks down for disorder in the transfer interactions resulting from variations in the molecular positions. We suggest the possibility to probe the joint distribution by means of single-molecule spectroscopy.

From fractal to nanorod porphyrin J-aggregates. Concentration-induced tuning of the aggregate size

A structural change from fractal to nanorod J-aggregates of tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin has been obtained by acting on the intermolecular interaction potential. The size and shape of these self-assembled porphyrin clusters have been monitored under different experimental conditions, by means of polarized and depolarized dynamic light scattering and small and wide angle elastic light scattering. At sufficiently low porphyrin concentration and high ionic strength, the shielded repulsive potential seems to be responsible for the fractal structure of the aggregates. On the contrary, at low ionic strength (nonshielded potential) and high porphyrin concentration, these species self-assemble in a rodlike arrangement. The length of the so-formed rod-shaped aggregates decreases on increasing porphyrin concentration. Moreover, both fractals and rods display a structure-dependent optical activity induced by a chiral template.

Aggregation of methyl orange probed by electrical impedance spectroscopy

We present results of an electrical impedance spectroscopy investigation of the evolution of the aggregation of methyl orange (MO) in pure aqueous solutions as the concentration of the dye is varied. By applying the constant phase element (CPE) approximation to model the electrical response of the MO solutions, we have verified that the formation of dimers and oligomers can be recognized by specific signatures in the loss and capacitive components of the dielectric response of the system. We interpret these well-defined changes in the dielectric properties of the solutions as a result of molecular rearrangements caused by the aggregation process that alter the current circulation pathways and the electric dipole distribution. The fact that these specific changes in the dielectric behavior coincide with critical concentrations where dimer and oligomer formation in pure aqueous MO solutions are known to occur suggests that electrical impedance spectroscopy can be a competitive technique for the investigation of aggregation behavior in dyes and surfactants.

Template-directed synthesis of silica-coated J-aggregate nanotapes

Self-assembly of porphyrin nanotapes in the presence of alkoxysilane reaction solutions produces hybrid nanofilaments consisting of an optically responsive J-aggregate core encased within an ultrathin shell of amorphous silica.
