Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Alkylthiol Self-Assembled Monolayers on Liquid Mercury

We report computer simulation of the self-assembly of alkylthiols on the surface of liquid mercury. Here we focus mainly on the alkylthiol behavior on mercury as a function of the surfactant surface coverage, which we study by means of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the equilibrium structure at room temperature. The majority of the presented results are obtained for octa- and dodecanethiol surfactants. This topic is particularly interesting because the properties of the alkylthiol self-assembled monolayers on liquid mercury are relevant for practical applications (e.g., in organic electronics) and can be controlled by mechanically manipulating the monolayer, i.e., by changing its structure. Our computer simulation results shed additional light on the alkylthiol self-assembly on liquid mercury by revealing the coexistence of a dense agglomerated laying-down alkylthiols with a very dilute 2D vapor on mercury surface rather than a single vapor phase in the low surface coverage regime. In the regimes of the high surface coverage we observe the coexistence of the laying-down liquid phase and crystalline phases with alkylthiols standing tilted at a sharp angle to the surface normal, which agrees with the phase behavior previously seen in X-ray and tensiometry experiments. We also discuss the influence of finite-size effects, which one inevitably encounters in molecular simulations. Our findings agree well with the general predictions of the condensation/evaporation theory for finite systems. The temperature dependence of the stability of the crystalline alkylthiol phases and details of the surfactant chemical binding to the surface are discussed. The equilibrium structure of the crystalline phase is investigated in detail for the alkylthiols of various tail lengths.

Alkyl-Based Surfactants at a Liquid Mercury Surface: Computer Simulation of Structure, Self-Assembly, and Phase Behavior

Self-assembled organic films on liquid metals feature a very rich phase behavior, which qualitatively differs from the one on crystalline metals. In contrast to conventional crystalline supports, self-assembled alkylthiol monolayers on liquid metals possess a considerably higher degree of molecular order, thus enabling much more robust metal-molecule-semiconductor couplings for organic electronics applications. Yet, compared to crystalline substrates, the self-assembly of organic surfactants on liquid metals has been studied to a much lesser extent. In this Letter we report the first of its kind molecular simulation investigation of alkyl-based surfactants on a liquid mercury surface. The focus of our investigation is the surfactant conformations as a function of surface coverage and surfactant type. First, we consider normal alkanes because these systems set the basis for simulations of all other organic surfactants on liquid mercury. Subsequently, we proceed with the discussion of alkylthiols that are the most frequently used surfactants in the surface science of hybrid organometallic interfaces. Our results indicate a layering transition of normal alkanes as well as alkylthiols from an essentially bare substrate to a completely filled monolayer of laying molecules. As the surface coverage increases further, we observe a partial wetting of the laying monolayer by the bulk phase of alkanes. In the case of alkylthiols, we clearly see the coexistence of molecules in laying-down and standing-up conformations, in which the sulfur headgroups of the thiols are chemically bound to mercury. In the standing-up phase, the headgroups form an oblique lattice. For the first time we were able to explicitly characterize the molecular-scale structure and transitions between phases of alkyl-based surfactants and to demonstrate how the presence of a thiol headgroup qualitatively changes the phase equilibrium and structure in these systems. The observed phenomena are consistent with available direct and indirect experimental evidence.

Structure of n-Alkyltrichlorosilane Monolayers on Si(100)/SiO2

The structure of n-alkyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkyl chain lengths n = 12, 14, 18, and 22 formed on the amorphous native oxide of silicon (100) has been investigated via angstrom-resolution surface X-ray scattering techniques, with particular focus on the proliferation of lateral order along the molecules' long axis. Grazing incidence diffraction shows that the monolayer is composed of hexagonally packed crystalline-like domains for n = 14, 18, and 22 with a lateral size of about 60 Å. However, Bragg rod analysis shows that ∼12 of the CH2 units are not included in the crystalline-like domains. We assign this, and the limited lateral crystallites' size, to strain induced by the size mismatch between the optimal chain-chain and headgroup-headgroup spacings. Analysis of X-ray reflectivity profiles for n = 12, 14, and 22 shows that the density profile used to successfully model n = 18 provides an excellent fit where the analysis-derived parameters provide complementary structural information to the grazing incidence results.

Surfactant-induced phases in water-supported alkane monolayers: II. Structure

The structure of the Langmuir-Gibbs films of normal alkanes C(n) of length n = 12-21 formed at the surface of aqueous solutions of C(m)TAB surfactants, m = 14, 16, and 18, was studied by surface-specific synchrotron X-ray methods. At high temperatures, a laterally disordered monolayer of mixed alkane molecules and surface-adsorbed surfactant tails is found, having thicknesses well below those of the alkanes' and surfactant tails' extended length. The mixed monolayer undergoes a freezing transition at a temperature T(s)(n,m), which forms, for n ≤ m + 1, a crystalline monolayer of mixed alkane molecules and surfactant tails. For n ≥ m + 2, a bilayer forms, consisting of an upper pure-alkane, crystalline monolayer and a lower liquidlike monolayer. The crystalline monolayer in both cases consists of hexagonally packed extended, surface-normal-aligned chains. The hexagonal lattice constant is found to decrease with increasing n. The films' structure is discussed in conjunction with their thermodynamic properties presented in an accompanying paper.

Assembly of amorphous clusters under floating monolayers: a comparison of in situ and ex situ techniques

We report synchrotron X-ray scattering studies of biomimetic crystallization of hydroxyapatite (the primary constituent of bone), using monolayers of fatty acid molecules floating on simulated body fluid (SBF) as well as aqueous solutions of calcium phosphate. A ∼10 Å thick film of amorphous material is observed to form immediately at the molecular monolayer, consistent with the proposed formation of "Posner clusters". This layer becomes denser but not significantly thicker as the subphase concentration and the temperature approach physiological conditions. The amorphous films do not crystallize within 24 h, in contrast to prior reports of more rapid crystallization using electron microscopy on ex situ samples. However, crystallization occurs almost immediately after our films are transferred onto solid substrates. These results illustrate the importance of in situ measurements for model biomineralization experiments.

Evolution of conformational order during self-assembly of n-alkanethiols on Hg droplets: an infrared spectromicroscopy study

This Letter describes Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy evidence for the evolution of conformational order and coverage during the formation of n-alkanethiol monolayers on microdroplets of mercury from the solution phase. At the highest coverages obtained by self-assembly, the monolayer is characterized by predominantly all-trans conformational order. For partial monolayers obtained at arbitrarily quenched incubation periods, we find a continuous evolution of the chain conformational order with monolayer coverage. Analyzing these results in light of previously reported models from X-ray scattering reveals a complex self-assembly process in which the density-dependent evolution of the chain conformational order is coupled with that of molecular orientation and density.

Two-dimensional order in mercury-supported langmuir films of fatty diacids

The structure of mercury-supported Langmuir films of dicarboxylic acid molecules with 13 ≤ n ≤ 22 carbons is studied by X-ray methods and surface tensiometry. The molecules lie surface-parallel, forming mono-, bi-, or trilayers, depending on coverage. All films exhibit a full 2D order of the same single-molecule oblique unit cell. In particular, the distinct odd-even structure difference of 3D crystals of the same molecules is not observed. The unit cell's width and angle show a small systematic decrease with n, while the length increases commensurately with the molecular length. These results show the films to consist of closely packed, extended, polymer-like chains of diacid molecules, bound by their carboxyl end groups. Evidence is presented for the inclusion of a single mercury atom in the carboxyl-carboxyl bond. The possible conformation of this bond and implications of the parity-independent structure are discussed.

Reverse self-assembly: (111)-oriented gold crystallization at alkylthiol monolayer templates

It has long been known that thiol-terminated molecules self-assemble as commensurate monolayers on Au(111) surfaces. By spreading floating octadecanethiol monolayers on aqueous solutions of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) and using x rays to reduce the gold ions as well as to probe the structure, we have observed the nucleation of (111)-oriented Au nanoparticles at thiol surfaces. This process may be similar to the formation of biogenic gold by bacteria. The thiol monolayer acts as a "soft template," changing its structure as Au crystals form so that there is a sqrt[3]×sqrt[3] commensurate relationship.

Checkerboard self-patterning of an ionic liquid film on mercury

Å-resolution studies of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) interfaces are scarce, in spite of their long-recognized importance for the science and many applications of RTILs. We present an Å-resolution x-ray study of a Langmuir film of an RTIL on mercury. At low (high) coverage [90 (50) Å2/molecule] a mono-(bi)layer of surface-parallel molecules is found. The molecules self-assemble in a lateral ionic checkerboard pattern, unlike the uniform-charge, alternate-ion layers of this RTIL at its bulk-solid interface. A 2D-smectic order is found, with molecules packed in parallel stripes, forming long-range order normal to, but none along, the stripes.

Aliphatic alcohols facilitate interfacial reorientation of thiols: correlation with alcohol adsorptivity

The influence of a series of aliphatic alcohols on the reorientation of alkylthiols during their self-assembly has been studied by cathodic stripping voltammetry. The presence of an aliphatic alcohol in the deposition solution is shown to lower the critical reorientational surface concentration of alkylthiols, making it less sensitive to molecular size. The use of a series of alcohols differing in their molecular length or branching reveals that the onset of thiol reorientation correlates well with the extent of alcohol adsorption. A theoretical model is developed to account for this effect, whose crux is the competition between the alcohol molecule and the alkyl chain of the thiol for adsorption sites. The analytical expression derived for the critical reorientational surface concentration reveals that the effect of adding alcohol can be rationalized in terms of an apparent reorientation equilibrium constant, which embodies both the bulk concentration and the adsorption equilibrium constant of the relevant alcohol. Overall, these findings corroborate that the interfacial reorientation of n-alkanethiols is sterically controlled and demonstrate that its onset can be finely tuned by addition of a suitable coadsorbate.

Reorientation of thiols during 2D self-assembly: interplay between steric and energetic factors

Reorientation of thiols during their 2D self-assembly is well established; however, little is known about its energetics and the factors that control its onset. We have developed a new strategy to determine the critical reorientational surface concentration (crsc) of thiols at the substrate/solution interface, which makes use of a cathodic stripping protocol. Its application to distinct homologous series of alkylthiols shows that the magnitude of the crsc and its variation with the molecular size is strongly dependent on the nature of the terminal group. Methyl-terminated alkylthiols reorient close to the saturation coverage of the lying-down phase, thus following their molecular size trend; whereas reorientation of alkylthiols bearing a negatively charged end group starts well below the monolayer coverage of the lying-down phase, with its onset being almost independent of the molecular size. Hydroxy-terminated alkylthiols show an intermediate behavior. A theoretical approach is developed to determine the reorientation equilibrium constant from the crsc value. The standard free energy of reorientation has been found to vary linearly with the alkyl chain length, and to increase upon replacing the terminal methyl group by a negatively charged one. A quantitative correlation between the reorientation equilibrium constant and the hydrophobicity of the molecule has been established. Overall, these findings have allowed us to disentangle the role of steric and energetic factors in the onset of the reorientation process of alkylthiols, demonstrating that their interplay can be finely tuned by varying either the alkyl chain length or the nature of the terminal group.

Effect of headgroup on electrical conductivity of self-assembled monolayers on mercury: n-alkanethiols versus n-alkaneselenols

The relative efficiencies of electron tunneling across self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-alkanethiols and n-alkaneselenols, CH(3)-(CH(2))(n)-XH, where n = 8, 9, 11, and X = S or Se, deposited on mercury electrodes were measured via electroreduction of Ru(NH(3))(6)(3+) in aqueous solutions. Electron tunneling rates across the monolayer films decay exponentially with the monolayer thickness with a tunneling coefficient, beta = 1.1 +/- 0.1 per CH(2) irrespective of the identity of the -XH headgroup. Electron tunneling rates across n-alkanethiol monolayers are ca. 4-fold larger than the rates measured across n-alkaneselenol monolayers containing the same number of carbon atoms, signifying the importance of headgroup/metal contact resistance in electron transfer through SAMs on mercury.

Langmuir films of chiral molecules on mercury

Homo- and heterochiral Langmuir films of a chiral derivative of stearic acid are studied in situ on the surface of liquid mercury as a function of surface coverage by surface tensiometry and surface-specific synchrotron X-ray diffraction and reflectivity. A transition from a phase of surface-parallel molecules to a phase of standing-up molecules is found. The former shows no surface-parallel long-range order. The standing-up phase of both homochiral and heterochiral compositions exhibit long-range order. However, the former has an oblique unit cell with parallel molecular planes, and the later has a centered rectangular unit cell with a herringbone molecular packing. For both cases, the standing-up molecules are tilted by 44 degrees from the surface normal and pack at a density of 19.5 A(2)/molecule in the plane normal to the molecular long axis. Important differences are found, and discussed, between this behavior and that of a Langmuir film of the nonchiral stearic acid on mercury.

Alkyl-thiol Langmuir films on the surface of liquid mercury

The coverage dependent phase behavior of monolayers of alkyl thiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, denoted as CnSH) on mercury was studied for chain lengths 9 <or= n <or= 22, using surface tensiometry and surface-specific X-ray scattering methods. At low coverage, a disordered single layer of surface-parallel molecules is found for all n. At high coverage, a monolayer of standing-up molecules is formed, exhibiting well-ordered phases, the structure of which is n- and coverage-dependent. The molecular chains pack in a centered rectangular unit cell, with an approximately 27 degrees tilt from the surface normal toward nearest neighbors. The strong sulfur-mercury bond induces a noncentered unit cell for the headgroups, incorporating one mercury atom per two thiol molecules. The small but significant differences in structure of these films on gold and on mercury are discussed and assigned to the different structure of the subphase: long-range-ordered crystal for gold and short-range-ordered liquid for mercury.

Influence of Defects on the Electrical Characteristics of Mercury-Drop Junctions: Self-Assembled Monolayers of n-Alkanethiolates on Rough and Smooth Silver

This paper compares the structural and electrical characteristics of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-alkanethiolates, SCn (n = 10, 12, 14), on two types of silver substrates: one used as-deposited (AS-DEP) by an electron-beam evaporator, and one prepared using the method of template-stripping. Atomic force microscopy showed that the template-stripped (TS) silver surfaces were smoother and had larger grains than the AS-DEP surfaces, and reflectance-absorbance infrared spectroscopy showed that SAMs formed on TS substrates were more crystalline than SAMs formed on AS-DEP substrates. The range of current densities, J (A/cm2), measured through mercury-drop junctions incorporating a given SAM on AS-DEP silver was, on average, several orders of magnitude larger than the range of J measured through the same SAM on TS silver, and the AS-DEP junctions failed, on average, 3.5 times more often within five current density-voltage (J-V) scans than did TS junctions (depending on the length of the alkyl chains of the molecules in the SAM). The apparent log-normal distribution of J through the TS junctions suggests that, in these cases, it is the variability in the effective thickness of the insulating layer (the distance the electron travels between electrodes) that results in the uncertainty in J. The parameter describing the decay of current density with the thickness of the insulating layer, beta, was either 0.57 A-1 at V = +0.5 V (calculated using the log-mean of the distribution of values of J) or 0.64 A-1 (calculated using the peak of the distribution of values of J) for the TS junctions; the latter is probably the more accurate. The mechanisms of failure of the junctions, and the degree and sources of uncertainty in current density, are discussed with respect to a variety of defects that occur within Hg-drop junctions incorporating SAMs on silver.

Theoretical model for the pulse dynamics in a long granular chain

When a long line of initially stationary and unstressed touching particles is hit on one end by another particle, dynamical self-organized impulsive waves will be generated and propagating through the granular chain. In this paper we develop a continuous function to represent the initial impulse wave. Then the partial differential wave equations for chains of cylindrical granules, which can take such function as one of its solutions, are constructed and exactly coincided with the wave equation obtained by using Taylor series expansion. The properties of the impulse wave propagating, such as the attenuation of the wave and the forward momentum transfer are studied in detail based on our theoretical model, and the analytical solutions are supported by numerical simulations.

Ab initio studies of layering behavior of liquid sodium surfaces and interfaces

We have studied the liquid surface of sodium with extensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on ensemble density-functional theory. We find clear evidence of layering in the direction perpendicular to the surface that persists to temperatures more than 100 K above the melting point. We also observe clear Friedel oscillations in the electronic density response to the presence of a surface, but their direct effect on atomic layering is ruled out. A careful finite-size effect analysis accompanies our results, showing that liquid slabs 20-25 A thick capture the essential details of the surface structure. We conclude that geometrical confinement is the common cause for layer formation, which is similar to what happens at a liquid-solid interface: at a free liquid surface, the rapid decay of the electronic density from the bulk liquid value to zero in the vapor forms a hard wall against which the atoms pack. Finally, we predict x-ray reflectivities from ab initio molecular dynamics data that include some of the large surface-normal wave vector-transfer regions that, for alkali metals, are not accessible to experiments.

Langmuir–Blodgett films of octadecanethiol – properties and potential applications

Octadecanethiol (ODT) is known to form self-assembled monolayer on noble metal surfaces which has potential technological applications. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is another useful method of obtaining highly ordered assembly of molecules. It is of interest to find whether ODT molecules can also form a stable Langmuir monolayer which facilitates the preparation of LB films. In literature, it has been reported that ODT molecules form an unstable Langmuir monolayer. We have studied the stability of the monolayer of the ODT molecules at air-water interface using surface manometry and microscopy techniques. We find the monolayer to be stable on ultrapure water of resistivity greater than 18MOmega cm. However, the behavior changes in the presence of even small amount of additives like NaOH or CdCl2 in the subphase. Our AFM studies on the LB films of ODT deposited from ion-free ultrapure water showed streak-like bilayer domains. The LB films of ODT deposited from CdCl2 containing aqueous subphase yield dendritic domains of the complexed unit grown over ODT monolayer. These nanostructures on surfaces may have potential applications in molecular electronics.

Direct structural observation of a molecular junction by high-energy x-ray reflectometry

We report a direct angstrom resolution measurement of the structure of a molecular-size electronic junction comprising a single (or a double) layer of alkyl-thiol and alkyl-silane molecules at the buried interface between solid silicon and liquid mercury. The high-energy synchrotron x-ray measurements reveal densely packed layers comprising roughly interface-normal molecules. The monolayer's thickness is found to be 3-4 A larger than that of similar layers at the free surfaces of both mercury and silicon. The origins of this and the other unusual features detected are discussed in this article. Measurements of the bilayer junction with an applied potential did not show visible changes in the surface normal structure.

Tunability of solitary wave properties in one-dimensional strongly nonlinear phononic crystals

One-dimensional strongly nonlinear phononic crystals were assembled from chains of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and stainless-steel spheres with gauges installed inside the beads. Trains of strongly nonlinear solitary waves were excited by impacts. A significant modification of the signal shape and an increase of solitary wave speed up to two times (at the same magnitude of dynamic contact force) were achieved through a noncontact magnetically induced precompression of the chains. The data for the PTFE based chains are presented for the first time and the data for the stainless-steel beads chains are extended into a range of maximum dynamic forces more than one order of magnitude lower than previously reported. Experimental results agreed reasonably well with the long-wave approximation and numerical calculations based on the Hertz interaction law for particles interactions.

Structure of Mercaptobiphenyl Monolayers on Mercury

The molecular-scale structure and phase behavior of single-component Langmuir films of 4'-methyl-4-mercaptobiphenyl (MMB) and 4'-perfluoromethyl-4-mercaptobiphenyl (FMMB) on mercury were studied using surface tensiometry, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, and X-ray reflectivity. At low coverages, a condensed but in-plane disordered single layer of surface-parallel molecules is found for both compounds. At high coverages, both compounds exhibit in-plane-ordered phases of standing-up molecules. For MMB, the biphenyl core dominates the structure, yielding a centered-rectangular unit cell with an area A(x) of 21.8 A(2)/molecule, with molecules tilted by approximately 14 degrees from the surface normal in the nearest-neighbor direction, and a coherence length xi of >1000 A for the crystalline domains. For FMMB, the perfluoromethyl group dominates the structure, yielding a hexagonal unit cell with untilted molecules, an area A(x) of 24.2 A(2)/molecule, and a much smaller xi of approximately 110 A. The structure is discussed in comparison with self-assembled monolayers of MMB on crystalline Au(111) and similar-length alkanethiolate SAMs on Au(111) and on mercury. The differences in the structure are discussed and traced to the differences in the substrate's surface structure, and in the molecular cross section and rigidity.

Molecular engineering of surfaces using self-assembled monolayers

The self-assembly of molecules into structurally organized monolayers (SAMs) uses the flexibility of organic chemistry and coordination chemistry to generate well-defined, synthetic surfaces with known molecular and macroscopic properties. The process of designing monolayers with a specified structure gives a high level of control over the molecular-level composition in the direction perpendicular to a surface; soft lithographic technique gives useful (if lower) resolution in the plane of the surface. Alkanethiolates adsorbed on gold, silver, mercury, palladium and platinum are currently the best-defined systems of SAMs. They provide substrates for a number of applications-from studies of wetting and electron transport to patterns for growing mammalian cells. SAMs have made organic surfaces a central part of surface science. Understanding the principles by which they form, and connecting molecular-level structure with macroscopic properties, opens a wide range of areas to study and exploitation.
