Energy Gaps of Polyradicals from an Effective and Transferable Hamiltonian with through-Bond Interactions

Current model Hamiltonians and ab initio many-body quantum treatments of π-conjugated polyradicals formed from hydrocarbons produce divergent results because of numerical complexity and large size of the basis-function set used. We propose an alternative, three-term Hamiltonian, to describe these various polyradicals that simplifies considerably the computational cost while providing a physical interpretation for all three terms and a high degree of model universality. The essential feature of this Hamiltonian is a term, not present in previous models, describing the three-sited through-bond interaction that governs the noninteracting spin-up and spin-down sectors. A computation of the lowest energy gaps and spin configurations for the smaller polyradicals demonstrates the efficacy of the model and its potential in applications in revealing electrical conductivity and ferromagnetism of the more complicated substituted polyradicals.

Electronic Structures of Anti-Ferromagnetic Tetraradicals: Ab Initio and Semi-Empirical Studies

The energy relationships and electronic structures of the lowest-lying spin states in several anti-ferromagnetic tetraradical model systems are studied with high-level ab initio and semi-empirical methods. The Full-CI method (FCI), the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), and the n-electron valence state perturbation theory (NEVPT2) are employed to obtain reference results. By comparing the energy relationships predicted from the Heisenberg and Hubbard models with ab initio benchmarks, the accuracy of the widely used Heisenberg model for anti-ferromagnetic spin-coupling in low-spin polyradicals is cautiously tested in this work. It is found that the strength of electron correlation (|U/t|) concerning anti-ferromagnetically coupled radical centers could range widely from strong to moderate correlation regimes and could become another degree of freedom besides the spin multiplicity. Accordingly, the Heisenberg-type model works well in the regime of strong correlation, which reproduces well the energy relationships along with the wave functions of all the spin states. In moderately spin-correlated tetraradicals, the results of the prototype Heisenberg model deviate severely from those of multi-reference electron correlation ab initio methods, while the extended Heisenberg model, containing four-body terms, can introduce reasonable corrections and maintains its accuracy in this condition. In the weak correlation regime, both the prototype Heisenberg model and its extended forms containing higher-order correction terms will encounter difficulties. Meanwhile, the Hubbard model shows balanced accuracy from strong to weak correlation cases and can reproduce qualitatively correct electronic structures, which makes it more suitable for the study of anti-ferromagnetic coupling in polyradical systems.

Non-collinear magnetism induced by frustration in transition-metal nanostructures deposited on surfaces

How does magnetism behave when the physical dimension is reduced to the size of nanostructures? The multiplicity of magnetic states in these systems can be very rich, in that their properties depend on the atomic species, the cluster size, shape and symmetry or choice of the substrate. Small variations of the cluster parameters may change the properties dramatically. Research in this field has gained much by the many novel experimental methods and techniques exhibiting atomic resolution. Here we review the ab-initio approach, focusing on recent calculations on magnetic frustration and occurrence of non-collinear magnetism in antiferromagnetic nanostructures deposited on surfaces.

Dynamical magnetic excitations of nanostructures from first principles

Within time-dependent density functional theory, combined with the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green functions, we devise a real space method to investigate spin dynamics. Our scheme enables one to deduce the Coulomb potential which assures a proper Goldstone mode is present. We illustrate with application to 3d adatoms and dimers on Cu(100).

Hyperfine and magnetic properties of Fe-Cu clusters and Fe precipitates embedded in a Cu matrix

Using the first-principles real-space linear muffin-tin orbital method within the atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) we study hyperfine and local magnetic properties of substituted pure Fe and Fe-Cu clusters in an fcc Cu matrix. Spin and orbital contributions to magnetic moments, hyperfine fields and the Mössbauer isomer shifts at the Fe sites in Fe precipitates and Fe-Cu alloy clusters of sizes up to 60 Fe atoms embedded in the Cu matrix are calculated and the influence of the local environment on these properties is discussed.

Magnetism of nanowires driven by novel even-odd effects

The parity of the number of atoms in finite antiferromagnetic nanowires deposited on ferromagnets is shown to be a crucial quantity determining their magnetic ground state. Relating results of the full-potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method for noncollinear magnetism from first principles to a Heisenberg model, we show that the magnetic structure changes dramatically across the entire nanowire if one single atom is added to it. Infinite and finite even-numbered nanochains exhibit always noncollinear magnetism, while odd-numbered wires lead under given conditions to a collinear ferrimagnetic ground state. This extremely nonlocal effect occurs only for nanosized wires.
