Coherent transport in a homojunction between an excitonic insulator and semimetal

Half-Excitonic Insulator: A Single-Spin Bose-Einstein Condensate

First-principles calculations reveal an unusual electronic state (dubbed as half excitonic insulator) in monolayer 1T-MX_{2} (M=Co, Ni and X=Cl, Br). Its one spin channel has a many-body ground state due to excitonic instability, while the other is characterized by a conventional band insulator gap. This disparity arises from a competition between the band gap and exciton binding energy, which exhibits a spin dependence due to different orbital occupations. Such a state can be identified by optical absorption measurements and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our theory not only provides new insights for the study of exciton condensation in magnetic materials but also suggests that strongly correlated materials could be fertile candidates for excitonic insulators.

Carbon nanotubes as excitonic insulators

Fifty years ago Walter Kohn speculated that a zero-gap semiconductor might be unstable against the spontaneous generation of excitons–electron–hole pairs bound together by Coulomb attraction. The reconstructed ground state would then open a gap breaking the symmetry of the underlying lattice, a genuine consequence of electronic correlations. Here we show that this excitonic insulator is realized in zero-gap carbon nanotubes by performing first-principles calculations through many-body perturbation theory as well as quantum Monte Carlo. The excitonic order modulates the charge between the two carbon sublattices opening an experimentally observable gap, which scales as the inverse of the tube radius and weakly depends on the axial magnetic field. Our findings call into question the Luttinger liquid paradigm for nanotubes and provide tests to experimentally discriminate between excitonic and Mott insulators.

It has long been anticipated theoretically that semiconductors with small band gaps may form a correlated exciton insulator phase, but it has been difficult to find material realisations. Here, the authors predict numerically that zero-gap armchair carbon nanotubes could be exciton insulators.

Transport Properties of an Electron-Hole Bilayer in Contact with a Superconductor Hybrid Junction

We investigate the transport properties of a junction consisting of an electron-hole bilayer in contact with normal and superconducting leads. The electron-hole bilayer is considered as a semimetal with two electronic bands. We assume that in the region between the contacts the system hosts an exciton condensate described by a BCS-like model with a gap Γ in the quasiparticle density of states. We first discuss how the subgap electronic transport through the junction is mainly governed by the interplay between two kinds of reflection processes at the interfaces: the standard Andreev reflection at the interface between the superconductor and the exciton condensate, and a coherent crossed reflection at the semimetal-exciton-condensate interface that converts electrons from one layer into the other. We show that the differential conductance of the junction shows a minimum at voltages of the order of Γ/e. Such a minimum can be seen as a direct hallmark of the existence of the gapped excitonic state.

Spin current due to spinlike Andreev reflection

We propose theoretically a spinlike Andreev reflection that may occur at the interface of a semimetal and a doped excitonic insulator. In contrast to the usual Andreev reflection, this process does not produce the charge current, but gives rise to a pure spin current. Further investigation reveals the existence of a spinlike Josephson phenomenon between two excitonic insulators with ferromagnetism, which results in a dissipationless spin current. We stress that the present spin current satisfies the conservation condition and is quite different from the spin Hall current induced from spin-orbital interactions.
