Evidence for the weak steric hindrance scenario in the supercooled-state reorientational dynamics

Decoupling of rotation and translation at the colloidal glass transition

In dense particle systems, the coupling of rotation and translation motion becomes intricate. Here, we report the results of confocal fluorescence microscopy where simultaneous recording of translational and rotational particle trajectories from a bidisperse colloidal dispersion is achieved by spiking the samples with rotational probe particles. The latter consist of colloidal particles containing two fluorescently labeled cores suited for tracking the particle's orientation. A comparison of the experimental data with event driven Brownian simulations gives insights into the system's structure and dynamics close to the glass transition and sheds new light onto the translation-rotation coupling. The data show that with increasing volume fractions, translational dynamics slows down drastically, whereas rotational dynamics changes very little. We find convincing agreement between simulation and experiments, even though the simulations neglect far-field hydrodynamic interactions. An additional analysis of the glass transition following mode coupling theory works well for the structural dynamics but indicates a decoupling of the diffusion of the smaller particle species. Shear stress correlations do not decorrelate in the simulated glass states and are not affected by rotational motion.

Observation of liquid glass in molecular dynamics simulations

Molecular anisotropy plays an important role in the glass transition of a liquid. Recently, a novel bulk glass state has been discovered by optical microscopy experiments on suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids. "Liquid glass" is a disordered analog of a nematic liquid crystal, in which rotation motion is hindered but particles diffuse freely. Global nematic order is suppressed as clusters of aligned particles intertwine. We perform Brownian dynamics simulations to test the structure and dynamics of a dense system of soft ellipsoidal particles. As seen in the experiments and in accordance with predictions from the mode coupling theory, on the time scale of our simulations, rotation motion is frozen but translation motion persists in liquid glass. Analyses of the dynamic structure functions for translation and rotation corroborates the presence of two separate glass transitions for rotation and translation, respectively. Even though the equilibrium state should be nematic, aligned structures remain small and orientational order rapidly decays with increasing size. Long-wavelength fluctuations are remnants of the isotropic-nematic transition.

Random walk model of mobility in glass formers

A mechanism responsible for the generic features of the mean squared displacement and the decay of the orientational autocorrelator of a molecule in a glass forming liquid is poorly understood, where such a mechanism would be critical for creating the theory of glass transition. A discrete random walk model is proposed where, instead of a straight line, a walk is along a tortuous path consisting of blocks of switchback ramps. Subdiffusive regime, short-term dynamic heterogeneity, and existence of the α- and β-relaxation processes emerge naturally from the model. The model suggests that slowing of the rate of relaxation may be due to an increase in the number of the switchback ramps per block rather than due to growth of an energy barrier as typically assumed.

Observation of liquid glass in suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids

Despite the omnipresence of colloidal suspensions, little is known about the influence of colloid shape on phase transformations, especially in nonequilibrium. To date, real-space imaging results at high concentrations have been limited to systems composed of spherical colloids. In most natural and technical systems, however, particles are nonspherical, and their structural dynamics are determined by translational and rotational degrees of freedom. Using confocal microscopy of fluorescently labeled core-shell particles, we reveal that suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids form an unexpected state of matter, a liquid glass in which rotations are frozen while translations remain fluid. Image analysis unveils hitherto unknown nematic precursors as characteristic structural elements of this state. The mutual obstruction of these ramified clusters prevents liquid crystalline order. Our results give insight into the interplay between local structures and phase transformations. This helps to guide applications such as self-assembly of colloidal superstructures and also gives evidence of the importance of shape on the glass transition in general.

Brownian motion of ellipsoidal particles on a granular magnetic bath

We study the Brownian motion of ellipsoidal particles lying on an agitated granular bath composed of magnetic particles. We quantify the mobility of different floating ellipsoidal particles using the mean-square displacement and the mean-square angular displacement, and relate the diffusion coefficients to the bath particle motion. In terms of the particle major radius R, we find the translational diffusion coefficient scales roughly as 1/R^{2} and the rotational diffusion coefficient scales as roughly 1/R^{4}; this is consistent with the assumption that diffusion arises from random kicks of the bath particles underneath the floating particle. By varying the magnetic forcing, the bath particles' diffusivity changes by a factor of ten; over this range, the translational and rotational diffusion of the floating particles change by a factor of 50. However, the ratio of the two diffusion constants for the floating particles is forcing-independent. Unusual aspects of the floating particle motion include non-Gaussian statistics for their displacements.

Rotational and translational dynamics in dense fluids of patchy particles

We explore the effect of directionality on rotational and translational relaxation in glassy systems of patchy particles. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze the impact of two distinct patch geometries, one that enhances the local icosahedral structure and the other one that does not strongly affect the local order. We find that in nearly all investigated cases, rotational relaxation takes place on a much faster time scale than translational relaxation. By comparing to a simplified dynamical Monte Carlo model, we illustrate that rotational diffusion can be qualitatively explained as purely local motion within a fixed environment, which is not coupled strongly to the cage-breaking dynamics required for translational relaxation. Nonetheless, icosahedral patch placement has a profound effect on the local structure of the system, resulting in a dramatic slowdown at low temperatures, which is strongest at an intermediate "optimal" patch size.

Glass-transition asymptotics in two theories of glassy dynamics: Self-consistent generalized Langevin equation and mode-coupling theory

We contrast the generic features of structural relaxation close to the idealized glass transition that are predicted by the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory (SCGLE) against those that are predicted by the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT). We present an asymptotic solution close to conditions of kinetic arrest that is valid for both theories, despite the different starting points that are adopted in deriving them. This in particular provides the same level of understanding of the asymptotic dynamics in the SCGLE as was previously done only for MCT. We discuss similarities and different predictions of the two theories for kinetic arrest in standard glass-forming models, as exemplified through the hard-sphere system. Qualitative differences are found for models where a decoupling of relaxation modes is predicted, such as the generalized Gaussian core model, or binary hard-sphere mixtures of particles with very disparate sizes. These differences, which arise in the distinct treatment of the memory kernels associated to self- and collective motion of particles, lead to distinct scenarios that are predicted by each theory for partially arrested states and in the vicinity of higher-order glass-transition singularities.

Active dumbbells: Dynamics and morphology in the coexisting region

With the help of molecular dynamics simulations we study an ensemble of active dumbbells in purely repulsive interaction. We derive the phase diagram in the density-activity plane and we characterise the various phases with liquid, hexatic and solid character. The analysis of the structural and dynamical properties, such as enstrophy, mean-square displacement, polarisation, and correlation functions, shows the continuous character of liquid and hexatic phases in the coexisting region when the activity is increased starting from the passive limit.

Micro-structure and motion of two-dimensional dense short spherocylinder liquids

We numerically investigate the micro-structure and motion of 2D liquids composed of dense short spherocylinders, by reducing the shape aspect ratio from 3. It is found that reducing shape aspect ratio from 3 causes a smooth transition from heterogeneous structures composed of crystalline ordered domains with good tetratic alignment order to those with good hexagonal bond-orientational order at an aspect ratio equaling 1.35. In the intermediate regime, both structural orders are strongly deteriorated, and the translational hopping rate reaches a maximum due to the poor particle interlocking of the disordered structure. Shortening rod length allows easier rotation, induces monotonic increase of rotational hopping rates, and resumes the separation of rotational and translational hopping time scales at the small aspect ratio end, after the crossover of their rates in the intermediate regime. At the large shape aspect ratio end, the poor local tetratic order has the same positive effects on facilitating local rotational and translational hopping. In contrast, at the small shape aspect ratio end, the poor local bond orientational order has the opposite effects on facilitating local rotational and translational hopping.

Elastic moduli of a Brownian colloidal glass former

The static, dynamic and flow-dependent shear moduli of a binary mixture of Brownian hard disks are studied by an event-driven molecular dynamics simulation. Thereby, the emergence of rigidity close to the glass transition encoded in the static shear modulus [Formula: see text] is accessed by three methods. Results from shear stress auto-correlation functions, elastic dispersion relations, and the elastic response to strain deformations upon the start-up of shear flow are compared. This enables one to sample the time-dependent shear modulus [Formula: see text] consistently over several decades in time. By that a very precise specification of the glass transition point and of [Formula: see text] is feasible. Predictions by mode coupling theory of a finite shear modulus at the glass transition, of α-scaling in fluid states close to the transition, and of shear induced decay in yielding glass states are tested and broadly verified.

Glassy swirls of active dumbbells

Is an active glass different from a conventional passive glass? To address this, we study the dynamics of a dense binary mixture of soft dumbbells, each subject to an active propulsion force and thermal fluctuations. This dense assembly shows dynamical arrest, first to a translational and then to a rotational glass, as one reduces temperature T or the self-propulsion force f. We monitor the dynamics along an iso-relaxation-time contour in the (T-f) plane. We find dramatic differences both in the fragility and in the nature of dynamical heterogeneity, which characterize the onset of glass formation-the activity-induced glass exhibits large swirls or vortices, whose scale is set by activity, and it appears to diverge as one approaches the glass transition. This large collective swirling movement should have implications for collective cell migration in epithelial layers. We construct continuum hydrodynamic equations for the simulated system, and we show that the observed behavior of this growing dynamic length scale can be understood from these equations.

Encapsulation of spherical nanoparticles by colloidal dimers

We study by Monte Carlo simulation the coating process of colloidal dimers onto spherical nanoparticles. To this end we investigate a simplified mixture of hard spheres (the guest particles) and hard dimers formed by two tangent spheres of different sizes (the encapsulating agents) in an implicit-solvent representation; in our scheme, the range of effective interactions between the smaller particle in a dimer and a guest sphere depends on their relative size. By tuning the size and concentration of guests, under overall dilute conditions a rich phase behavior emerges: for small sizes and/or low concentrations, the preferred arrangement is compact aggregates (capsules) of variable sizes, where one or few guest particles are coated with dimers; for larger sizes and moderate guest concentrations, other scenarios are realized, including equilibrium separation between a guest-rich and a guest-poor phase. Our results serve as a framework for a more systematic investigation of self-assembled structures of functionalized dimers capable of encapsulating target particles, like for instance bioactive substances in a colloidal dispersion.

Cooling the two-dimensional short spherocylinder liquid to the tetratic phase: Heterogeneous dynamics with one-way coupling between rotational and translational hopping

We numerically demonstrate the transition from the isotropic liquid to the tetratic phase with quasilong-range tetratic alignment order (i.e., with nearly parallel or perpendicular aligned rods), for the cold two-dimensional (2D) short spherocylinder system before crystallization and investigate the thermal assisted heterogeneous rotational and translational micromotions. Comparing with the 2D liquid of isotropic particles, spherocylinders introduce extra rotational degrees of freedom and destroy packing isotropy and the equivalence between rotational and translational motions. It is found that cooling leads to the stronger dynamical heterogeneity with more cooperative hopping and the stronger retardations of rotational hopping than translational hopping. Under topological constraints from nearly parallel and perpendicular rods of the tetratic phase, longitudinal and transverse translational hopping can occur without rotational hopping, but not the reverse. The empty space trailing a neighboring translational hopping patch is needed for triggering the patch rotational hopping with its translational motion into the empty space. It is the origin for the observed increasing separation of hopping time scales and the one-way coupling between rotational and translational hopping. Strips of longitudinally or transversely aligned rods can be ruptured and reconnected with neighboring strips through buckling, kink formation, and patch rotation, under the unbalanced torques or forces from their neighboring rods and thermal kicks.

Cluster formation and phase separation in heteronuclear Janus dumbbells

We have recently investigated the phase behavior of model colloidal dumbbells constituted by two identical tangent hard spheres, with the first being surrounded by an attractive square-well interaction (Janus dumbbells, Munaó et al 2014 Soft Matter 10 5269). Here we extend our previous analysis by introducing in the model the size asymmetry of the hard-core diameters and study the enriched phase scenario thereby obtained. By employing standard Monte Carlo simulations we show that in such 'heteronuclear Janus dumbbells' a larger hard-sphere site promotes the formation of clusters, whereas in the opposite condition a gas-liquid phase separation takes place, with a narrow interval of intermediate asymmetries wherein the two phase behaviors may compete. In addition, some peculiar geometrical arrangements, such as lamellæ, are observed only around the perfectly symmetric case. A qualitative agreement is found with recent experimental results, where it is shown that the roughness of molecular surfaces in heterogeneous dimers leads to the formation of colloidal micelles.

Rotational dynamics of simple asymmetric molecules

Molecular dynamic simulations were carried out on rigid diatomic molecules, which exhibit both α (structural) and β (secondary) dynamics. The relaxation scenarios range from onset behavior, in which a distinct α process emerges on cooling, to merging behavior, associated with two relaxation peaks that converge at higher temperature. These properties, as well as the manifestation of the β peak as an excess wing, depend not only on thermodynamic conditions, but also on both the symmetry of the molecule and the correlation function (odd or even) used to analyze its dynamics. These observations help to reconcile divergent results obtained from different experiments. For example, the β process is more intense and the α-relaxation peak is narrower in dielectric relaxation spectra than in dynamic light scattering or NMR measurements. In the simulations herein, this follows from the weaker contribution of the secondary relaxation to even-order correlation functions, related to the magnitude of the relevant angular jumps.

Observable-dependence of the effective temperature in off-equilibrium diatomic molecular liquids

We discuss the observable-dependence of the effective temperature Teff, defined via the fluctuation-dissipation relation, of an out-of-equilibrium system composed by homonuclear dumbbell molecules. Teff is calculated by evaluating the fluctuation and the response for two observables associated, respectively, to translational and to rotational degrees of freedom, following a sudden temperature quench. We repeat our calculations for different dumbbell elongations ζ. At high elongations (ζ > 0.4), we find the same Teff for the two observables. At low elongations (ζ ⩽ 0.4), only for very deep quenches Teff coincides. The observable-dependence of Teff for low elongations and shallow quenches stresses the importance of a strong coupling between orientational and translational variables for a consistent definition of the effective temperature in glassy systems.

Phase separation and self-assembly of colloidal dimers with tunable attractive strength: from symmetrical square-wells to Janus dumbbells

We numerically investigate colloidal dimers with asymmetric interaction strengths to study how the interplay between molecular geometry, excluded volume effects and attractive forces determines the overall phase behavior of such systems. Specifically, our model is constituted by two rigidly-connected tangent hard spheres interacting with other particles in the first instance via identical square-well attractions. Then, one of the square-well interactions is progressively weakened, until only the corresponding bare hard-core repulsion survives, giving rise to a "Janus dumbbell" model. We investigate structure, thermodynamics and phase behavior of the model by means of successive umbrella sampling and Monte Carlo simulations. In most of the cases, the system behaves as a standard simple fluid, characterized by a gas-liquid phase separation, for sufficiently low temperatures. In these conditions we observe a remarkable linear scaling of the critical temperature as a function of the interaction strength. But, as the interaction potential approaches the Janus dumbbell limit, we observe the spontaneous formation of self-assembled lamellar structures, preempting the gas-liquid phase separation. Comparison with previous studies allows us to pinpoint the role of the interaction range in controlling the onset of ordered structures and the competition between the formation of these structures and gas-liquid condensation.

Orientational glass in mixtures of elliptic and circular particles: structural heterogeneities, rotational dynamics, and rheology

Using molecular dynamics simulation with an angle-dependent Lennard-Jones potential, we study orientational glass with quadrupolar symmetry in mixtures of elliptic particles and circular impurities in two dimensions. With a mild aspect ratio (= 1.23) and a mild size ratio (= 1.2), we realize a plastic crystal at relatively high temperature T. With further lowering T, we find a structural phase transition for very small impurity concentration c and pinned disordered orientations for not small c. The ellipses are anchored by the impurities in the planar alignment. With increasing c, the orientation domains composed of isosceles triangles gradually become smaller, resulting in orientational glass with crystal order. In our simulation, the impurity distribution becomes heterogeneous during quenching from liquid, which then produces rotational dynamic heterogeneities. We also examine rheology in orientational glass to predict a shape memory effect and a superelasticity effect, where a large fraction of the strain is due to collective orientation changes.

Characteristics of the Johari-Goldstein process in rigid asymmetric molecules

Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out on a Lennard-Jones binary mixture of rigid (fixed bond length) diatomic molecules. The translational and rotational correlation functions, and the corresponding susceptibilities, exhibit two relaxation processes: the slow structural relaxation (α dynamics) and a higher frequency secondary relaxation. The latter is a Johari-Goldstein (JG) process, by its definition of involving all parts of the molecule. It shows several properties characteristic of the JG relaxation: (1) merging with the α relaxation at high temperature; (2) a change in temperature dependence of its relaxation strength on vitrification; (3) a separation in frequency from the α peak that correlates with the breadth of the α dispersion; and (4) sensitivity to volume, pressure, and physical aging. These properties can be used to determine whether a secondary relaxation in a real material is an authentic JG process, rather than more trivial motion involving intramolecular degrees of freedom. The latter has no connection to the glass transition, whereas the JG relaxation is closely related to structural relaxation, and thus can provide new insights into the phenomenon.

Formation of double glass in binary mixtures of anisotropic particles: dynamic heterogeneities in rotations and displacements

We study glass behavior in a mixture of elliptic and circular particles in two dimensions at low temperatures using an orientation-dependent Lennard-Jones potential. The ellipses have a mild aspect ratio (∼1.2) and tend to align at low temperatures, while the circular particles play the role of impurities disturbing the ellipse orientations at a concentration of 20%. These impurities have a size smaller than that of the ellipses and attract them in the homeotropic alignment. As a result, the coordination number around each impurity is mostly 5 or 4 in glassy states. We realize double glass, where both the orientations and the positions are disordered but still hold mesoscopic order. We find a strong heterogeneity in the flip motions of the ellipses, which sensitively depends on the impurity clustering. In our model, a small fraction of the ellipses still undergo flip motions relatively rapidly even at low temperatures. In contrast, the nonflip rotations (with angle changes not close to ±π) are mainly caused by the cooperative configuration changes involving many particles. Then, there arises a long-time heterogeneity in the nonflip rotations closely correlated with the dynamic heterogeneity in displacements.

Cooperative heterogeneous facilitation: multiple glassy states and glass-glass transition

The formal structure of glass singularities in the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of supercooled liquids dynamics is closely related to that appearing in the analysis of heterogeneous bootstrap percolation on Bethe lattices, random graphs, and complex networks. Starting from this observation one can build up microscopic on-lattice realizations of schematic MCT based on cooperative facilitated spin mixtures. I discuss a microscopic implementation of the F(13) schematic model including multiple glassy states and the glass-glass transition. Results suggest that our approach is flexible enough to bridge alternative theoretical descriptions of glassy matter based on the notions of quenched disorder and dynamic facilitation.

Glass transitions in quasi-two-dimensional suspensions of colloidal ellipsoids

We observed a two-step glass transition in monolayers of colloidal ellipsoids by video microscopy. The glass transition in the rotational degree of freedom was at a lower density than that in the translational degree of freedom. Between the two transitions, ellipsoids formed an orientational glass. Approaching the respective glass transitions, the rotational and translational fastest-moving particles in the supercooled liquid moved cooperatively and formed clusters with power-law size distributions. The mean cluster sizes diverge in power law as they approach the glass transitions. The clusters of translational and rotational fastest-moving ellipsoids formed mainly within pseudonematic domains and around the domain boundaries, respectively.

Activated dynamics in dense fluids of attractive nonspherical particles. I. Kinetic crossover, dynamic free energies, and the physical nature of glasses and gels

We apply the center-of-mass versions of naïve mode coupling theory and nonlinear Langevin equation theory to study how short-range attractive interactions modify the onset of localization, activated single-particle dynamics, and the physical nature of the transiently arrested state of a variety of dense nonspherical particle fluids (and the spherical analog) as a function of volume fraction and attraction strength. The form of the dynamic crossover boundary depends on particle shape, but the reentrant glass-fluid-gel phenomenon and the repulsive glass-to-attractive glass crossover always occur. Diverse functional forms of the dynamic free energy are found for all shapes including glasslike, gel-like, a glass-gel form defined by the coexistence of two localization minima and two activation barriers, and a "mixed" attractive glass characterized by a single, very short localization length but an activation barrier located at a large displacement as in repulsive-force caged glasses. For the latter state, particle trajectories are expected to be of a two-step activated form and can be accessed at high attraction strength by increasing volume fraction, or by increasing attraction strength at fixed high enough volume fraction. A new classification scheme for slow dynamics of fluids of dense attractive particles is proposed based on specification of both the nature of the localized state and the particle displacements required to restore ergodicity via activated barrier hopping. The proposed physical picture appears to be in qualitative agreement with recent computer simulations and colloid experiments.

Rotational dynamics and aging in a magnetic colloidal glass

We follow here the freezing of the orientational degrees of freedom of strongly interacting magnetic and charged nanoparticles, as the colloidal glass transition is approached. Using a magnetoinduced birefringence technique, we show that the rotational dynamics drastically slows down following a Vogel-Fulcher law. More precisely, this slowing down occurs above a volume fraction threshold phi*, the value of which depends on the range of electrostatic repulsion between nanoparticles. An interpretation in terms of effective spheres, slightly anisotropic, is proposed. The aging of the rotational dynamics of the more concentrated samples is reported on long time scales, with an exponential growth of the rotational characteristic time with the age t(w) of the sample. An attempt of age rescaling at different volume fractions leads us to introduce a phi-dependent "birth age" t(w)0(varphi) , which diverges analytically at the Vogel-Fulcher volume fraction.

Theory of coupled translational-rotational glassy dynamics in dense fluids of uniaxial particles

The naïve mode coupling theory (NMCT) for ideal kinetic arrest and the nonlinear Langevin equation theory of activated single-particle barrier hopping dynamics are generalized to treat the coupled center-of-mass (CM) translational and rotational motions of uniaxial hard objects in the glassy fluid regime. The key dynamical variables are the time-dependent displacements of the particle center-of-mass and orientational angle. The NMCT predicts a kinetic arrest diagram with three dynamical states: ergodic fluid, plastic glass, and fully nonergodic double glass, the boundaries of which meet at a "triple point" corresponding to a most difficult to vitrify diatomic of aspect ratio approximately 1.43. The relative roles of rotation and translation in determining ideal kinetic arrest are explored by examining three limits of the theory corresponding to nonrotating, pure rotation, and rotationally ergodic models. The ideal kinetic arrest boundaries represent a crossover to activated dynamics described by two coupled stochastic nonlinear Langevin equations for translational and rotational motions. The fundamental quantity is a dynamic free-energy surface, which for small aspect ratios in the high-volume fraction regime exhibits two saddle points reflecting a two-step activated dynamics where relatively rapid rotational dynamics coexists with slower CM translational motions. For large-enough aspect ratios, the dynamic free-energy surface has one saddle point which corresponds to a system-specific coordinated translation-rotation motion. The entropic barriers as a function of the relative amount of rotation versus translation are determined.

Tagged-particle dynamics in a fluid adsorbed in a disordered porous solid: interplay between the diffusion-localization and liquid-glass transitions

A mode-coupling theory for the slow single-particle dynamics in fluids adsorbed in disordered porous media is derived, which complements previous work on the collective dynamics [V. Krakoviack, Phys. Rev. E 75, 031503 (2007)]. Its equations, such as the previous ones, reflect the interplay between confinement-induced relaxation phenomena and glassy dynamics through the presence of two contributions in the slow part of the memory kernel, which are linear and quadratic in the density correlation functions, respectively. From numerical solutions for two simple models with pure hard-core interactions, it is shown that two different scenarios result for the diffusion-localization transition depending on the strength of the confinement. For weak confinement, this transition is discontinuous and coincides with the ideal glass transition, such as in one-component bulk systems, while, for strong confinement, it is continuous and occurs before the collective dynamics gets nonergodic. In the latter case, the glass transition manifests itself as a secondary transition, which can be either continuous or discontinuous, in the already arrested single-particle dynamics. The main features of the anomalous dynamics found in the vicinity of all these transitions are reviewed and illustrated with detailed computations.

Coupling and decoupling between translational and rotational dynamics in a supercooled molecular liquid

We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the coupling and decoupling between translational and rotational dynamics in a glass-forming liquid of dumbbells. We find that the coupling between the translational (tau_{q;{*}};{C}) and rotational (tau_{2}) relaxation times increases with decreasing temperature T, whereas the coupling decreases between the translational (D_{t}) and rotational (D_{r}) diffusivities. In addition, the T dependence of D_{t} decouples from that of 1/tau_{2}. We show that the decreasing coupling between D_{t} and D_{r} is only apparent due to the inadequacy of the concept of the rotational diffusion constant for describing the reorientational dynamics in the supercooled state. We also argue that the coupling between tau_{q;{*}};{C} and tau_{2} and the decoupling between D_{t} and 1/tau_{2} can be consistently understood in terms of the growing dynamic length scale.

Connections of activated hopping processes with the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation and with aspects of dynamical heterogeneities

We develop an extended version of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) for glass transition, which incorporates activated hopping processes via the dynamical theory originally formulated to describe diffusion-jump processes in crystals. The dynamical-theory approach adapted here to glass-forming liquids treats hopping as arising from vibrational fluctuations in the quasiarrested state where particles are trapped inside their cages, and the hopping rate is formulated in terms of the Debye-Waller factors characterizing the structure of the quasiarrested state. The resulting expression for the hopping rate takes an activated form, and the barrier height for the hopping is "self-generated" in the sense that it is present only in those states where the dynamics exhibits a well defined plateau. It is discussed how such a hopping rate can be incorporated into MCT so that the sharp nonergodic transition predicted by the idealized version of the theory is replaced by a rapid but smooth crossover. We then show that the developed theory accounts for the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation observed in a variety of fragile glass formers. It is also demonstrated that characteristic features of dynamical heterogeneities revealed by recent computer simulations are reproduced by the theory. More specifically, a substantial increase of the non-Gaussian parameter, double-peak structure in the probability distribution of particle displacements, and the presence of a growing dynamic length scale are predicted by the extended MCT developed here, which the idealized version of the theory failed to reproduce. These results of the theory are demonstrated for a model of the Lennard-Jones system, and are compared with related computer-simulation results and experimental data.

Glassy dynamics and kinetic vitrification of isotropic suspensions of hard rods

A nonlinear Langevin equation (NLE) theory for the translational center-of-mass dynamics of hard nonspherical objects has been applied to isotropic fluids of rigid rods. The ideal kinetic glass transition volume fraction is predicted to be a monotonically decreasing function beyond an aspect ratio of two. The functional form of the decrease is weaker than the inverse aspect ratio. Vitrification occurs at lower volume fractions for corrugated tangent bead rods compared to their smooth spherocylinder analogs. The ideal glass transition signals a crossover to activated dynamics, which is estimated to be observable before the nematic phase boundary is encountered if the aspect ratio is less than roughly 25. Calculations of the glassy elastic shear modulus and absolute yield stress reveal a roughly exponential growth with volume fraction. The dependence of entropic barriers and mean barrier hopping times on concentration for rods of variable aspect ratios can be collapsed quite well based on a difference volume fraction variable that quantifies the distance from the ideal glass boundary. Full numerical solution of the NLE theory via stochastic trajectory simulation was performed for tangent bead rods, and the results were compared to their hard sphere analogs. With increasing shape anisotropy the characteristic length scales of the nonequilibrium free energy increase and the magnitude of the localization well and entropic barrier curvatures decreases. These changes result in a significant aspect ratio dependence of dynamical properties and time correlation functions including weaker intermediate time subdiffusive transport, stronger two-step decay of the incoherent dynamic structure factor, longer mean alpha relaxation time, and stronger wavevector-dependent decoupling of relaxation times and the self-diffusion constant. The theoretical results are potentially testable via computer simulation, confocal microscopy, and dynamic light scattering.

Ideal vitrification, barrier hopping, and jamming in fluids of modestly anisotropic hard objects

Our recent theory for the glassy dynamics of fluids and suspensions of hard nonspherical objects is applied to several modestly anisotropic shapes. The role of bond length and aspect ratio is studied for diatomics, triatomics, and spherocylinders. As spherical symmetry is broken the ideal kinetic glass transition volume fraction of all objects increases linearly with aspect ratio with the same slope, in surprising agreement with the jamming phase diagram of hard granular ellipsoids. The ideal glass boundary of all shapes is a nonmonotonic function of aspect ratio which is also in qualitative accord with the jamming behavior of spherocylinders and ellipsoids. The maximum glass volume fraction shifts to higher values, and larger aspect ratios, as the object becomes smoother. Suggestions for why the nonequilibrium jamming and kinetic ideal glass formation (dynamical crossover) boundaries are similar are advanced. Beyond the ideal glass volume fraction the nonequilibrium free energy acquires a localization well and entropic barrier. Although its form is highly nonuniversal, if different shapes are compared at constant barrier height then a good collapse is found. Collapse of the volume fraction dependence of the barrier height for different shapes is also predicted for modest shape anisotropy, but increasingly fails as the aspect ratio exceeds 2. For a given volume fraction the mean barrier hopping times are nonmonotonic functions of aspect ratio. The functional form of this dependence, and order of magnitude variation with aspect ratio, is distinct for each object.

Dynamics of uniaxial hard ellipsoids

We study the dynamics of monodisperse hard ellipsoids via a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm as a function of volume fraction phi and aspect ratio X0. We evaluate the translational D(trans) and the rotational D(rot) diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi-X0 plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the D(trans) and D(rot) isodiffusivity lines. While the self-intermediate scattering function exhibits stretched relaxation, i.e., glassy dynamics, only for large phi and X(0) approximately 1, the second order orientational correlator C2(t) shows stretching only for large and small X0 values. We discuss these findings in the context of a possible prenematic order driven glass transition.

Ideal glass transitions, shear modulus, activated dynamics, and yielding in fluids of nonspherical objects

An extension of naive ideal mode coupling theory (MCT) and its generalization to treat activated barrier hopping and glassy dynamics in fluids and suspensions composed of nonspherical hard core objects is proposed. An effective center-of-mass description is adopted. It corresponds to a specific type of pre-averaging of the dynamical consequences of orientational degrees of freedom. The simplest case of particles composed of symmetry-equivalent interaction sites is considered. The theory is implemented for a homonuclear diatomic shape of variable bond length. The naive MCT glass transition boundary is predicted to be a nonmonotonic function of the length-to-width or aspect ratio and occurs at a nearly unique value of the dimensionless compressibility. The latter quantifies the amplitude of long wavelength thermal density fluctuations, thereby (empirically) suggesting a tight connection between the onset of localization and thermodynamics. Localization lengths and elastic shear moduli for different aspect ratio and volume fraction systems approximately collapse onto master curves based on a reduced volume fraction variable that quantifies the distance from the ideal glass transition. Calculations of the entropic barrier height and hopping time, maximum restoring force, and absolute yield stress and strain as a function of diatomic aspect ratio and volume fraction have been performed. Strong correlations of these properties with the dimensionless compressibility are also found, and nearly universal dependences have been numerically identified based on property-specific nondimensionalizations. Generalization of the approach to rigid rods, disks, and variable shaped molecules is possible, including oriented liquid crystalline phases.

Relaxation scenarios in a mixture of large and small spheres: Dependence on the size disparity

We present a computational investigation on the slow dynamics of a mixture of large and small soft spheres. By varying the size disparity at a moderate fixed composition different relaxation scenarios are observed for the small particles. For small disparity density-density correlators exhibit moderate stretching. Only small quantitative differences are observed between dynamic features for large and small particles. On the contrary, large disparity induces a clear time scale separation between the large and small particles. Density-density correlators for the small particles become extremely stretched and display logarithmic relaxation by properly tuning the temperature or the wave vector. Self-correlators decay much faster than density-density correlators. For very large size disparity, a complete separation between self- and collective dynamics is observed for the small particles. Self-correlators decay to zero at temperatures where density-density correlations are frozen. The dynamic picture obtained by varying the size disparity resembles features associated with mode coupling transition lines of the types B and A at, respectively, small and very large size disparities. Both lines might merge, at some intermediate disparity, at a higher-order point, to which logarithmic relaxation would be associated. This picture resembles predictions of a recent mode coupling theory for fluids confined in matrices with interconnected voids [V. Krakoviack, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 065703 (2005)].

Dynamic arrest in a liquid of symmetric dumbbells: Reorientational hopping for small molecular elongations

We present extensive equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium molecular-dynamics simulations of a liquid of symmetric dumbbell molecules, for constant packing fraction, as a function of temperature and molecular elongation. We compute diffusion constants as well as odd and even orientational correlators. The notations odd and even refer to the parity of the order l of the corresponding Legendre l polynomial, evaluated for the orientation of the molecular axis relative to its initial position. Rotational degrees of freedom of order l are arrested if, in the long-time limit, the corresponding orientational l correlator does not decay to zero. It is found that for large elongations translational and rotational degrees of freedom freeze at the same temperature. For small elongations only the even rotational degrees of freedom remain coupled to translational motions and arrest at a finite common temperature. On the contrary, the odd rotational degrees of freedom remain ergodic at all investigated temperatures. Hence, in the translationally arrested state, each molecule remains trapped in the cage formed by its neighboring molecules, but is able to perform 180 degrees rotations, which lead to relaxation only for the odd orientational correlators. The temperature dependence of the characteristic time of these residual rotations is well described by an Arrhenius law. Finally, we discuss the evidence in favor of the presence of the type-A transition for the odd rotational degrees of freedom, as predicted by mode-coupling theory for small molecular elongations. This transition is distinct from the type-B transition, associated with the arrest of the translational and even rotational degrees of freedom for small elongations, and with all degrees of freedom for large elongations. Odd orientational correlators are computed for small elongations at very low temperatures in the translationally arrested state. The obtained results suggest that hopping events restore the ergodicity of the odd rotational degrees of freedom at temperatures far below the A transition.
