Universality of ionic criticality: size- and charge-asymmetric electrolytes

Wettability of ultra-small pores of carbon electrodes by size-asymmetric ionic fluids

Recently, we studied the phase behavior of ionic fluids under confinement using the classical density functional theory within the framework of the restricted primitive model. The theoretical results indicate that narrowing the pore size may lead to a drastic reduction in the electric double layer capacitance, while increasing the surface electrical potential would improve the ionic accessibility of micropores. In this work, we extend the theoretical investigation to systems containing size-asymmetric electrolytes that may exhibit a vapor-liquid like phase transition in the bulk phase. The effects of pore size and surface electric potential on the phase diagram and microscopic structures of the confined electrolytes were studied over a broad range of parameters. We found that decreasing the pore size or increasing the surface potential could destabilize the liquid phase in micropores, and capillary evaporation could occur regardless of the size asymmetry between cations and anions. Compared to that in a symmetric ionic system, the vapor-liquid phase separation is more likely to take place as the size asymmetry becomes more pronounced. The phase transition would alter the "accessibility" of ions to micropores and lead to coexisting micropores with different surface charge densities as identified by Monte Carlo simulation.

Molecular dynamics determination of liquid-vapor coexistence in molten alkali halides

We show by extensive molecular dynamics simulations that accurate predictions of liquid-vapor coexistence in molten alkali halides can be achieved in terms of a rigid ion potential description in which temperature-dependent ionic diameters are employed. The new ionic sizes result from the fitting of the experimental isothermal compressibilities, a condition whose physical implications and consequences are illustrated. The same diameters also allow us to formulate confident predictions for the compressibilities of salts in cases where the experimental data are lacking. The extension of the present approach to molten alkali-halide mixtures and to other classes of molten salts is discussed.

Vapor-liquid phase behavior of a size-asymmetric model of ionic fluids confined in a disordered matrix: The collective-variables-based approach

We develop a theory based on the method of collective variables to study the vapor-liquid equilibrium of asymmetric ionic fluids confined in a disordered porous matrix. The approach allows us to formulate the perturbation theory using an extension of the scaled particle theory for a description of a reference system presented as a two-component hard-sphere fluid confined in a hard-sphere matrix. Treating an ionic fluid as a size- and charge-asymmetric primitive model (PM) we derive an explicit expression for the relevant chemical potential of a confined ionic system which takes into account the third-order correlations between ions. Using this expression, the phase diagrams for a size-asymmetric PM are calculated for different matrix porosities as well as for different sizes of matrix and fluid particles. It is observed that general trends of the coexistence curves with the matrix porosity are similar to those of simple fluids under disordered confinement, i.e., the coexistence region gets narrower with a decrease of porosity and, simultaneously, the reduced critical temperature T_{c}^{*} and the critical density ρ_{i,c}^{*} become lower. At the same time, our results suggest that an increase in size asymmetry of oppositely charged ions considerably affects the vapor-liquid diagrams leading to a faster decrease of T_{c}^{*} and ρ_{i,c}^{*} and even to a disappearance of the phase transition, especially for the case of small matrix particles.

A simulation assessment of the thermodynamics of dense ion-dipole mixtures with polarization

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to ascertain the relative importance of various electrostatic interaction contributions, including induction interactions, to the thermodynamics of dense, hot ion-dipole mixtures. In the absence of polarization, we find that an MD-constrained free energy term accounting for the ion-dipole interactions, combined with well tested ionic and dipolar contributions, yields a simple, fairly accurate free energy form that may be a better option for describing the thermodynamics of such mixtures than the mean spherical approximation (MSA). Polarization contributions induced by the presence of permanent dipoles and ions are found to be additive to a good approximation, simplifying the thermodynamic modeling. We suggest simple free energy corrections that account for these two effects, based in part on standard perturbative treatments and partly on comparisons with MD simulation. Even though the proposed approximations likely need further study, they provide a first quantitative assessment of polarization contributions at high densities and temperatures and may serve as a guide for future modeling efforts.

Freeze-drying-induced changes in the properties of graphene oxides

We have characterized and evaluated changes in graphene oxide (GO) induced by means of freeze-drying. In order to evaluate these changes, we investigated the effects of freeze-drying and chemical reduction processes on the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and Raman properties of GO and reduced GO. The freeze-dried GO had a pore structure, maintaining a pored morphology even after thermal annealing. The freeze-dried samples were composed of a single folded nanosheet or a few nanosheets stacked and folded. The oxygen-containing functional groups were removed not only during the freeze-drying but also during the reduction processes, with an accompanying decrease in the average size of the sp(2) carbon domain (i.e. an increase in the ID/IG value).

Gas-liquid phase coexistence and crossover behavior of binary ionic fluids with screened Coulomb interactions

We study the effects of an interaction range on the gas-liquid phase diagram and the crossover behavior of a simple model of ionic fluids: an equimolar binary mixture of equisized hard spheres interacting through screened Coulomb potentials which are repulsive between particles of the same species and attractive between particles of different species. Using the collective variables theory, we find explicit expressions for the relevant coefficients of the effective φ{4} Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian in a one-loop approximation. Within the framework of this approximation, we calculate the critical parameters and gas-liquid phase diagrams for varying inverse screening length z. Both the critical temperature scaled by the Yukawa potential contact value and the critical density rapidly decrease with an increase of the interaction range (a decrease of z) and then for z<0.05 they slowly approach the values found for a restricted primitive model (RPM). We find that gas-liquid coexistence region reduces with an increase of z and completely vanishes at z≃2.78. Our results clearly show that an increase in the interaction range leads to a decrease of the crossover temperature. For z≃0.01, the crossover temperature is the same as for the RPM.

Ginzburg criterion for ionic fluids: the effect of Coulomb interactions

The effect of the Coulomb interactions on the crossover between mean-field and Ising critical behavior in ionic fluids is studied using the Ginzburg criterion. We consider the charge-asymmetric primitive model supplemented by short-range attractive interactions in the vicinity of the gas-liquid critical point. The model without Coulomb interactions exhibiting typical Ising critical behavior is used to calibrate the Ginzburg temperature of the systems comprising electrostatic interactions. Using the collective variables method, we derive a microscopic-based effective Hamiltonian for the full model. We obtain explicit expressions for all the relevant Hamiltonian coefficients within the framework of the same approximation, i.e., the one-loop approximation. Then we consistently calculate the reduced Ginzburg temperature t(G) for both the purely Coulombic model (a restricted primitive model) and the purely nonionic model (a hard-sphere square-well model) as well as for the model parameters ranging between these two limiting cases. Contrary to the previous theoretical estimates, we obtain the reduced Ginzburg temperature for the purely Coulombic model to be about 20 times smaller than for the nonionic model. For the full model including both short-range and long-range interactions, we show that t(G) approaches the value found for the purely Coulombic model when the strength of the Coulomb interactions becomes sufficiently large. Our results suggest a key role of Coulomb interactions in the crossover behavior observed experimentally in ionic fluids as well as confirm the Ising-like criticality in the Coulomb-dominated ionic systems.

Thermodynamics and diffusion in size-symmetric and asymmetric dense electrolytes

MD simulation results for model size-symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes at high densities and temperatures (well outside the liquid-gas coexistence region) are generated and analyzed focusing on thermodynamic and diffusion properties. An extension of the mean spherical approximation for electrolytes originally derived for charged hard sphere fluids is adapted to these systems by exploiting the separation of short range and Coulomb interaction contributions intrinsic to these theoretical models and is found to perform well for predicting equation of state quantities. The diffusion coefficients of these electrolytes can also be reasonably well predicted using entropy scaling ideas suitably adapted to charged systems and mixtures. Thus, this approach may provide an avenue for studying dense electrolytes or complex molecular systems containing charged species at high pressures and temperatures.

When is a conductor not perfect? Sum rules fail under critical fluctuations

Perfect screening of all charges characterizes a conductor, a fact embodied in the Stillinger-Lovett sum rule: namely, the charge-charge correlation or structure factor, S(ZZ)(k), varies with momentum transfer k→0 as ξ(D)(2)k(2) where the Debye length ξ(D) is a universal function, √k(B)T/ρq(D)(2), of T and the ion density ρ, with a scaled charge q(D). For a charge-symmetric hard-sphere electrolyte our grand canonical simulations, with a new finite-size scaling device, confirm the Stillinger-Lovett rule except, contrary to current theory, for its failure at criticality. Furthermore, the k(4) term in the S(ZZ)(k) expansion is found to diverge like the compressibility when T→T(c) at ρ(c).

Gas-liquid critical parameters of asymmetric models of ionic fluids

The effects of size and charge asymmetry on the gas-liquid critical parameters of a primitive model (PM) of ionic fluids are studied within the framework of the statistical field theory based on the collective variables method. Recently, this approach has enabled us to obtain the correct trends of the both critical parameters of the equisize charge-asymmetric PM without assuming ionic association. In this paper, we focus on the general case of an asymmetric PM characterized by the two parameters: hard-sphere diameter, lambda=sigma+/sigma-, and charge, z=q+/|q-|, ratios of the two ionic species. We derive an explicit expression for the chemical potential conjugate to the order parameter which includes the effects of correlations up to the third order. Based on this expression we consider the three versions of PM: a monovalent size-asymmetric PM (lambda not equal 1, z=1) , an equisize charge-asymmetric PM (lambda=1, z not equal 1) and a size- and charge-asymmetric PM (lambda not equal 1, z=2) . Similar to simulations, our theory predicts that the critical temperature and the critical density decrease with the increase in size asymmetry. Regarding the effects of charge asymmetry, we obtain the correct trend of the critical temperature with z , while the trend of the critical density obtained in this approximation is inconsistent with simulations, as well as with our previous results found in the higher-order approximation. We expect that the consideration of the higher-order correlations will lead to the correct trend of the critical density with charge asymmetry.

Critical behavior on approaching a special critical point in a complex fluid

The critical behavior of osmotic susceptibility is investigated in the re-entrant complex mixture 1-propanol (P)+water (W)+potassium chloride (KCl) through light-scattering measurements. The measurements are performed on approaching a special critical point [i.e., the double critical point (DCP)] in this mixture, along the line of upper critical solution temperatures (T(U)'s), by varying t from the high temperature one-phase region. The light-scattering data analysis emphasizes the need for corrections to the asymptotic Ising behavior and yields very large magnitudes for the correction-to-scaling amplitudes A(1) and A(2), with the first-correction amplitude A(1) being negative, signifying a nonmonotonic crossover behavior of the susceptibility exponent in this mixture. For the T(U) closest to the DCP, the effective susceptibility exponent gamma(eff) displays a nonmonotonic crossover from its nearly doubled three dimensional (3D)-Ising value toward its nearly double mean-field value with an increase in t. While for that far away from the DCP, it displays a nonmonotonic crossover from its single-limit Ising value toward a value slightly lower than its mean-field value of 1 with an increase in t. This feature of the effective susceptibility exponent is interpreted in terms of the possibility of a nonmonotonic crossover to the mean-field value from lower values in the nonasymptotic high t region. The renormalized Ising regime extends over a larger t range for the sample (or T(U)) closest to the DCP when compared to that far away from it. The in-between T(U)'s display a trend toward shrinkage in the renormalized Ising regime as T(U) shifts away from the DCP. Nevertheless, the crossover to the mean-field behavior is completed only beyond t>10(-2) for the T(U)'s studied. The observed crossover behavior is attributed to the presence of strong ion-induced clustering in this mixture, as revealed by various structure probing techniques, while the observed unique trend in the crossover behavior is discussed in terms of the varying influence of the DCP on the critical behavior along the T(U) line. The crossover behavior for the T(U)'s is pronounced and more sharp compared to the T(L)'s (lower critical solution temperatures) [U. K. Pradeep, J. Chem. Phys. 129, 134506 (2008)] in this mixture, although there exists no difference in the growth of the mesoscale clusters in the lower and upper one-phase regions in this mixture. Our observations suggest the need to look at the crossover behavior probably from two perspectives, namely, the dielectric effect and the clustering effect. The effective susceptibility exponent as a function of the field variable t(UL), instead of the conventional variable t, displays a sharp nonmonotonic crossover from its asymptotic 3D-Ising value ( approximately 1.24) toward a value slightly lower than its nonasymptotic mean-field value of 1, as that observed in the t analysis for the T(U) far away from the influence of the DCP.

Simulation of symmetric tricritical behavior in electrolytes

Despite extensive experimental, theoretical, and simulation efforts, a unified description of ionic phase transitions and criticality has not yet emerged. In this work, we investigate the phase behavior of the restricted primitive model of electrolyte solutions on the simple cubic lattice using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling techniques. The phase diagram of the system is distinctly different from its continuum-space analog. We find order-disorder transitions for reduced temperatures T* < or approximately 0.51, where the ordered structures resemble those of the NaCl crystal. The order-disorder transition is continuous for 0.15 < or approximately T* < or approximately 0.51 and becomes first order at lower temperatures. The line of first-order transitions is a line of three-phase coexistence between a disordered and two ordered phases. The line of continuous, second-order transitions meets this line of triple points at a tricritical point at T* approximately equal to 0.1475. We locate the line of continuous transitions, and the line of triple points using finite-size scaling techniques. The tricritical temperature is estimated by extrapolation of the size-dependent tricritical temperatures obtained from a sixth-order Landau expansion of the free energy. Our calculated phase diagram is in qualitative agreement with mean-field theories.

Ion-induced multiply reentrant liquid-liquid transitions and the nature of criticality in ethanol-water mixture

We report a quite unusual feature of four liquid-liquid reentrant transitions in ethanol (E)+water (W)+ammonium sulfate mixture by meticulous tuning of the ammonium sulfate concentration in a narrow range, as a function of temperature, at atmospheric pressure. Detailed exploration of the intricate phase behavior in terms of E/W sections shows that the range of triple reentrance shrinks with increasing E/W. The behavior of osmotic susceptibility is investigated by light scattering, near the critical point, in the one-phase region by varying the temperature at fixed concentration of the components, in a particular E/W section. The critical exponent of susceptibility (gamma) and correlation length (nu) are observed to have Fisher renormalized Ising values [Phys. Rev. 176, 237 (1968)], with gamma(r)=1.41 and nu(r)=0.718. The effective susceptibility exponent, gamma(eff), exhibits a sharp, nonmonotonic crossover from Ising to mean-field critical behavior, which is completed outside the critical regime. The amplitude of the correlation length, xi(o)(=21.2+/-0.4 A), deduced from light scattering experiment, is an order of magnitude larger than the typical values in usual aqueous electrolyte systems. This value of xi(o) is further verified from small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments and found to be consistent. SAXS experiments on the critical sample reveal the presence of long-ranged intermolecular correlations, leading to supramolecular structuring, at a temperature far away from the critical point. These results convincingly demonstrate that the finite length scale arising due to the structuring competes with the diverging correlation length of critical concentration fluctuations, which influences the nonasymptotic critical behavior in this aqueous electrolyte system. The sulphate ions play a dominant role in both structuring and the complex phase behavior.

Static and dynamic critical behavior of a symmetrical binary fluid: A computer simulation

A symmetrical binary, A+B Lennard-Jones mixture is studied by a combination of semi-grand-canonical Monte Carlo (SGMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods near a liquid-liquid critical temperature T(c). Choosing equal chemical potentials for the two species, the SGMC switches identities (A-->B-->A) to generate well-equilibrated configurations of the system on the coexistence curve for T<T(c) and at the critical concentration, x(c)=12, for T>T(c). A finite-size scaling analysis of the concentration susceptibility above T(c) and of the order parameter below T(c) is performed, varying the number of particles from N=400 to 12 800. The data are fully compatible with the expected critical exponents of the three-dimensional Ising universality class. The equilibrium configurations from the SGMC runs are used as initial states for microcanonical MD runs, from which transport coefficients are extracted. Self-diffusion coefficients are obtained from the Einstein relation, while the interdiffusion coefficient and the shear viscosity are estimated from Green-Kubo expressions. As expected, the self-diffusion constant does not display a detectable critical anomaly. With appropriate finite-size scaling analysis, we show that the simulation data for the shear viscosity and the mutual diffusion constant are quite consistent both with the theoretically predicted behavior, including the critical exponents and amplitudes, and with the most accurate experimental evidence.

Local molecular field theory for effective attractions between like charged objects in systems with strong Coulomb interactions

Strong, short-ranged positional correlations involving counterions can induce a net attractive force between negatively charged strands of DNA and lead to the formation of ion pairs in dilute ionic solutions. However, the long range of the Coulomb interactions impedes the development of a simple local picture. We address this general problem by mapping the properties of a nonuniform system with Coulomb interactions onto those of a simpler system with short-ranged intermolecular interactions in an effective external field that accounts for the averaged effects of appropriately chosen long-ranged and slowly varying components of the Coulomb interactions. The remaining short-ranged components combine with the other molecular core interactions and strongly affect pair correlations in dense or strongly coupled systems. We show that pair correlation functions in the effective short-ranged system closely resemble those in the uniform primitive model of ionic solutions and illustrate the formation of ion pairs and clusters at low densities. The theory accurately describes detailed features of the effective attraction between two equally charged walls at strong coupling and intermediate separations of the walls. Analytical results for the minimal coupling strength needed to get any attraction and for the separation at which the attractive force is a maximum are presented.
