0-pi transitions in Josephson junctions with antiferromagnetic interlayers

Finite-momentum Cooper pairing in proximitized altermagnets

Finite-momentum Cooper pairing is an unconventional form of superconductivity that is widely believed to require finite magnetization. Altermagnetism is an emerging magnetic phase with highly anisotropic spin-splitting of specific symmetries, but zero net magnetization. Here, we study Cooper pairing in metallic altermagnets connected to conventional s-wave superconductors. Remarkably, we find that the Cooper pairs induced in the altermagnets acquire a finite center-of-mass momentum, despite the zero net magnetization in the system. This anomalous Cooper-pair momentum strongly depends on the propagation direction and exhibits unusual symmetric patterns. Furthermore, it yields several unique features: (i) highly orientation-dependent oscillations in the order parameter, (ii) controllable 0-π transitions in the Josephson supercurrent, (iii) large-oblique-angle Cooper-pair transfer trajectories in junctions parallel with the direction where spin splitting vanishes, and (iv) distinct Fraunhofer patterns in junctions oriented along different directions. Finally, we discuss the implementation of our predictions in candidate materials such as RuO2 and KRu4O8.

dc Josephson Effect in Altermagnets

The ability of magnetic materials to modify superconductors is an active research area for possible applications in thermoelectricity, quantum sensing, and spintronics. We consider the fundamental properties of the Josephson effect in a class of magnetic materials that recently have attracted much attention: altermagnets. We show that despite having no net magnetization and a band structure qualitatively different from ferromagnets and from conventional antiferromagnets without spin-split bands, altermagnets induce 0-π oscillations. The decay length and oscillation period of the Josephson coupling are qualitatively different from ferromagnetic junctions and depend on the crystallographic orientation of the altermagnet. The Josephson effect in altermagnets thus serves a dual purpose: it acts as a signature that distinguishes altermagnetism from ferromagnetism and conventional antiferromagnetism and offers a way to control the supercurrent via flow direction anisotropy.

Electrically Controlled Crossed Andreev Reflection in Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

We report generic and tunable crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) in a superconductor sandwiched between two antiferromagnetic layers. We consider recent examples of two-dimensional magnets with hexagonal lattices, where gate voltages control the carrier type and density, and predict a robust signature of perfect CAR in the nonlocal differential conductance with one electron-doped and one hole-doped antiferromagnetic lead. The magnetic field-free and spin-degenerate CAR signal is electrically controlled and visible over a large voltage range, showing promise for solid-state quantum entanglement applications.

Enhanced supercurrents in Josephson junctions containing nonparallel ferromagnetic domains

π coupling may arise when a ferromagnet forms a link between two superconductors of an artificial Josephson junction. Using a trilayer Fe/Cr/Fe barrier in which the Cr thickness determines the alignment of the Fe layers, we show that the critical currents are substantially enhanced in the antiparallel configuration. The result agrees with existing superconductor-ferromagnet proximity theory according to which the phase-controlling effects of ferromagnets on Cooper pairs can be minimized by arranging their moments in a nonparallel way [Bergeret, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3140 (2001); Blanter, Phys. Rev. B 69, 024525 (2004)].

Josephson pi state in a ferromagnetic insulator

We predict anomalous atomic-scale 0-pi transitions in a Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic-insulator (FI) barrier. The ground state of such junction alternates between 0 and pi states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We find that the mechanism of the 0-pi transition can be attributed to thickness-dependent phase shifts between the wave numbers of electrons and holes in FI. Based on these results, we show that a stable pi state can be realized in junctions based on high-T{c} superconductors with a La2BaCuO5 barrier.
