Wannier-based definition of layer polarizations in perovskite superlattices

Strain engineering of ferroelectric KNbO3 for bulk photovoltaic applications: an insight from density functional theory calculations

A large ferroelectric (FE) polarization and low bandgap are essential to improving the bulk photovoltaic response which is the generation of photocurrent in the polar non-centrosymmetric materials such as FE perovskite oxides. Among various perovskite oxides, Potassium Niobate (KNbO₃, KNO) is a promising FE material for bulk photovoltaic applications as its bandgap and polarization can be tuned effectively by strain, doping, or by applying an electric field. In this work, using the density functional theory calculations, we present an insight into the strain engineering of polarization, band structure, and optical properties of the cubic (C), tetragonal (T), and orthorhombic (O) structures of KNO. The tensile and compressive strain under the triaxial, biaxial, and uniaxial conditions are applied along the direction parallel and perpendicular to the polar axis of KNO structures. We find that the bandgap decreases along with a substantial increment of polarization on the application of tensile strain along the direction parallel to the polar axis. In T (O) phase at  +2% strain, the polarization increases by 18 µC cm^-2 (14 µC cm^-2) in triaxial, 26 µC cm^-2 (16 µC cm^-2) in biaxial, and 29 µC cm^-2 (29 µC cm^-2) in uniaxial conditions with a considerable decreasing of bandgap with respect to zero strain condition. Therefore, wisely applying the tensile strain along the direction parallel to the polar axis, the photovoltaic efficiency of KNO can be improved.

Screening mechanisms at polar oxide heterointerfaces

The interfaces of polar oxide heterostructures can display electronic properties unique from the oxides they border, as they require screening from either internal or external sources of charge. The screening mechanism depends on a variety of factors, including the band structure at the interface, the presence of point defects or adsorbates, whether or not the oxide is ferroelectric, and whether or not an external field is applied. In this review, we discuss both theoretical and experimental aspects of different screening mechanisms, giving special emphasis to ways in which the mechanism can be altered to provide novel or tunable functionalities. We begin with a theoretical introduction to the problem and highlight recent progress in understanding the impact of point defects on polar interfaces. Different case studies are then discussed, for both the high thickness regime, where interfaces must be screened and each interface can be considered separately, and the low thickness regime, where the degree and nature of screening can be manipulated and the interfaces are close enough to interact. We end with a brief outlook toward new developments in this rapidly progressing field.

Adiabatic pumping of Chern-Simons axion coupling

We study the adiabatic pumping of the Chern-Simons axion (CSA) coupling along a parametric loop characterized by a nonzero second Chern number C^{(2)} from the viewpoint of the hybrid Wannier representation, in which the Wannier charge centers are visualized as sheets defined over a projected 2D Brillouin zone. We derive a new formula for the CSA coupling, expressing it as an integral involving Berry curvatures and potentials defined on the Wannier charge center sheets. We show that a loop characterized by a nonzero C^{(2)} requires a series of sheet-touching events at which 2π quanta of Berry curvature are passed from sheet to sheet, in such a way that e^{2}/h units of CSA coupling are pumped by a lattice vector by the end of the cycle. We illustrate these behaviors via explicit calculations on a model tight-binding Hamiltonian and discuss their implications.

First-principles modeling of electrostatically doped perovskite systems

Macroscopically, confined electron gases at polar oxide interfaces are rationalized within the simple "polar catastrophe" model. At the microscopic level, however, many other effects such as electric fields, structural distortions and quantum-mechanical interactions enter into play. Here, we show how to bridge the gap between these two length scales, by combining the accuracy of first-principles methods with the conceptual simplicity of model Hamiltonian approaches. To demonstrate our strategy, we address the equilibrium distribution of the compensating free carriers at polar LaAlO(3)/SrTiO(3) interfaces. Remarkably, a model including only calculated bulk properties of SrTiO(3) and no adjustable parameters accurately reproduces our full first-principles results. Our strategy provides a unified description of charge compensation mechanisms in SrTiO(3)-based systems.

Onset of ferrielectricity and the hidden nature of nanoscale polarization in ferroelectric thin films

Using calculations from first principles and the concept of layer polarization, we have elucidated the nanoscale organization and local polarization in ferroelectric thin films between metallic contacts. The profile of the local polarization for different film thicknesses unveils a peculiar spatial pattern of atomic layers with uncompensated dipoles in what was originally thought to be a ferroelectric domain. This effectively ferrielectric behavior is induced by the dominant roles of the interfaces at such reduced dimensionality and can be interpreted using a simple classical model where the latter are explicitly taken into account.

Predicting polarization and nonlinear dielectric response of arbitrary perovskite superlattice sequences

We carry out first-principles calculations of the nonlinear dielectric response of short-period ferroelectric superlattices. We compute and store not only the total polarization, but also the Wannier-based polarizations of individual atomic layers, as a function of the electric displacement field, and use this information to construct a model capable of predicting the nonlinear dielectric response of an arbitrary superlattice sequence. We demonstrate the successful application of our approach to superlattices composed of SrTiO3, CaTiO3, and BaTiO3 layers.
