Determination of the antiferroquadrupolar order parameters in UPd(3)

Observation of a critical charge mode in a strange metal

Understanding the strange metallic behavior that develops at the brink of localization in quantum materials requires probing the underlying electronic charge dynamics. Using synchrotron radiation-based Mössbauer spectroscopy, we studied the charge fluctuations of the strange metal phase of β-YbAlB₄ as a function of temperature and pressure. We found that the usual single absorption peak in the Fermi-liquid regime splits into two peaks upon entering the critical regime. We interpret this spectrum as a single nuclear transition, modulated by nearby electronic valence fluctuations whose long time scales are further enhanced by the formation of charged polarons. These critical charge fluctuations may prove to be a distinct signature of strange metals.

X-ray synchrotron radiation studies of actinide materials

By reviewing a selection of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resonant X-ray scattering (RXS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), resonant and non-resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS, NIXS), and dispersive inelastic scattering (IXS) experiments, the potential of synchrotron radiation techniques in studying lattice and electronic structure, hybridization effects, multipolar order and lattice dynamics in actinide materials is demonstrated.

The linear and non-linear magnetic response of a tri-uranium single molecule magnet

We report here low temperature magnetization isotherms for the single molecule magnet, (UO₂-L)₃. By analyzing the low temperature magnetization in terms of M  =  χ ₁ B  +  χ ₃ B ³ we extract the linear susceptibility χ ₁ and the leading order nonlinear susceptibility χ ₃. We find that χ ₁ exhibits a peak at a temperature of T ₁  =  10.4 K with χ ₃ also exhibiting a peak but at a reduced temperature T ₃  =  5 K. At the lowest temperatures the isotherms exhibit a critical field B _c  =  11.5 T marked by a clear point of inflection. A minimal Hamiltonian employing S  =  1 (pseudo) spins with only a single energy scale (successfully used to model the behavior of bulk f-electron metamagnets) is shown to provide a good description of the observed linear scaling between T ₁, T ₃ and B _c. We further show that a Heisenberg Hamiltonian previously employed by Carretta et al (2013 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 25 486001) to model this single molecule magnet gives formulas for the angle averaged susceptibilities (in the Ising limit) very similar to those of the minimal model.

Materials design for new superconductors

Since the announcement in 2011 of the Materials Genome Initiative by the Obama administration, much attention has been given to the subject of materials design to accelerate the discovery of new materials that could have technological implications. Although having its biggest impact for more applied materials like batteries, there is increasing interest in applying these ideas to predict new superconductors. This is obviously a challenge, given that superconductivity is a many body phenomenon, with whole classes of known superconductors lacking a quantitative theory. Given this caveat, various efforts to formulate materials design principles for superconductors are reviewed here, with a focus on surveying the periodic table in an attempt to identify cuprate analogues.

Magnetic properties and chiral states of a trimetallic uranium complex

The magnetic properties of the triangular molecular nanomagnet [UO2L]3 (L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate) have been investigated through electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-field magnetization and susceptibility measurements. The experimental findings are well reproduced by a microscopic model including exchange interactions and local crystal fields. These results show that [UO2L]3 is characterized by a non-magnetic ground doublet corresponding to two oppositely twisted chiral arrangements of the uranium moments. The non-axial character of single-ion crystal fields leads to quantum tunneling of the noncollinear magnetization in the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the triangle plane.

Dynamical matrix diagonalization for the calculation of dispersive excitations

The solid state exhibits a fascinating variety of phases, which can be stabilized by the variation of external parameters such as temperature, magnetic field and pressure. Until recently, numerical analysis of magnetic and/or orbital phases with collective excitations on a periodic lattice tended to be done on a case-by-case basis. Nowadays dynamical matrix diagonalization (DMD) has become an important and powerful standard method for the calculation of dispersive modes. The application of DMD to the interpretation of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data on dispersive magnetic excitations is reviewed. A methodical survey of calculations employing spin-orbit and intermediate coupling schemes is illustrated by examples. These are taken from recent work on rare earth, actinide and transition metal compounds and demonstrate the application of the formalism developed.

Antiferro-quadrupolar structures in UPd3 inferred from x-ray resonant Bragg diffraction

A systematic analysis of resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction data for UPd(3), with signal enhancement at the U M(IV) edge, including possible structural phase transitions leads to a new determination of the space groups of the material in the phases between T(0)=7.8 K and T(+1)=6.9 K, as P 222(1), and between T(-1)=6.7 K and T(2)=4.4 K, as P2(1). In addition, the quadrupolar order parameters, {Q(ab)}, inferred from diffraction data for the phase between T(-1) and T(2), are {Q(xz)} and {Q(yz)} at the (103) Bragg reflection and {Q(xy)} at the (104) reflection.

The effect of core-valence intra-atomic quadrupolar interaction in resonant x-ray scattering at the Dy M4,5 edges in DyB2C2

The dependences on energy of the resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction intensities in DyB(2)C(2) for the (00½) reflection at the Dy M(4,5) edges have been calculated with an atomic multiplet Hamiltonian including the effect of the crystal field and introducing an intra-atomic quadrupolar interaction between the 3d core and 4f valence shell. These calculations are compared with experimental results (Mulders et al 2006 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18 11195) for the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic phases of DyB(2)C(2). We reproduce all the features appearing in the (00½) reflection energy profile in the antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase, and we reproduce the behaviour of the resonant x-ray scattering intensity at different energies in the vicinity of the Dy M(5) edge when the temperature is lowered within the antiferromagnetic phase. These calculations show that a detailed description of the energy dependences of resonant x-ray scattering signals at the M edges in 4f and 5f systems with multipolar ordering may require the inclusion of an aspherical intra-atomic Coulomb interaction.

Resonant X-ray scattering study of quadrupole-strain coupling in DyB4

X-ray and neutron scattering studies were performed on DyB4 which exhibits both a quadrupolar ordering and a macroscopic lattice distortion. A forbidden reflection at 7.792 keV near the Dy L3 absorption edge is identified as a quadrupolar ordering peak, and the quadrupolar order and a monoclinic structural distortion develop concomitantly below 12.3 K as second-order-type phase transitions. Coupling between the quadrupolar order and the strain in DyB4 is directly demonstrated by observing that both order parameters are proportional to each other.
