Proton momentum distribution in a protein hydration shell

Atomic momentum distributions in polyatomic molecules in rotational-vibrational eigenstates

We report a quantum mechanical method for calculating the momentum distributions of constituent atoms of polyatomic molecules in rotational-vibrational eigenstates. Application of the present theory to triatomic molecules in the rovibrational ground state revealed that oscillatory changes appear on the proton momentum distribution in the nonlinear H2O molecule, while no such modulation is present in the case of an oxygen atom in the linear CO2 molecule. The atomic momentum distributions were analyzed in detail by means of a rigid rotor model, and it was found that the oscillation originates from the quantum-mechanical delocalization of the target atom with respect to the other atoms.

Anisotropy of the Proton Kinetic Energy as a Tool for Capturing Structural Transition in Water Confined in a Graphene Nanoslit Pore

The proton dynamics of a 2D water monolayer confined inside a graphene slit pore is studied in Cartesian and molecular frames of reference using molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational density of states of the proton was calculated versus temperature and was further used to deduce the mean kinetic energy of the hydrogen atoms, Ke(H), in both frames of reference. The directional components of Ke(H) are in good agreement with experimental observations for bulk as well as nanoconfined water. Nonetheless, while in the molecular frame of reference the effect of temperature on the anisotropy ratios of Ke(H) (the ratio between its directional components) are practically invariant between the 2D and 3D cases, those in the Cartesian frame of reference reveal a rather notable reduction across 200 K, indicating the occurrence of an order-disorder transition. This result is further supported by the calculated entropy and enthalpy of the confined water molecules. Overall, it is shown that Ke(H) anisotropy ratios may serve as a valuable order parameter for detecting structural transformations in hydrogen bonds containing molecular systems.

Anomalous Intrinsic Fluorescence of HCl and NaOH Aqueous Solutions

The unique properties of liquid water mainly arise from its hydrogen bond network. The geometry and dynamics of this network play a key role in shaping the characteristics of soft matter, from simple solutions to biosystems. Here we report an anomalous intrinsic fluorescence of HCl and NaOH aqueous solutions at room temperature that shows important differences in the excitation and emission bands between the two solutes. From ab initio time-dependent density functional theory modeling we propose that fluorescence emission could originate from hydrated ion species contained in transient cavities of the bulk solvent. These cavities, which are characterized by a stiff surface, could provide an environment that, upon trapping the excited state, suppresses the fast nonradiative decay and allows the slower radiative channel to become a possible decay pathway.

Excitations in the quantum liquid 4He: A review

Progress made in measuring and interpreting the elementary excitations of superfluid and normal liquid [Formula: see text] in the past 25 years is reviewed. The goal is to bring up to date the data, calculations and our understanding of the excitations since the books and reviews of the early 1990s. Only bulk liquid [Formula: see text] is considered. Reference to liquid [Formula: see text], mixtures, reduced dimensions (films and confined helium) is made where useful to enhance interpretation. The focus is on the excitations as measured by inelastic neutron scattering methods. The review covers the dynamical response of liquid [Formula: see text] from the collective excitations at low energy and long wavelength (i.e. phonon-roton modes) to the single particle excitations at high energy from which the atomic momentum distribution and Bose-Einstein condensate fraction are determined. A goal is to show the interplay of these excitations with other spectacular properties such as superfluidity and the test of fundamental calculations of quantum liquids that is possible. The role of Bose-Einstein condensation in determining the nature of the [Formula: see text] mode and particularly it's temperature dependence is emphasized. The similarity of normal liquid [Formula: see text] with other quantum and classical liquids is discussed.

Anomalous ground state of the electrons in nanoconfined water

Water confined on the scale of 20 Å, is known to have different transport and thermodynamic properties from that of bulk water, and the proton momentum distribution has recently been shown to have qualitatively different properties from that exhibited in bulk water. The electronic ground state of nanoconfined water must be responsible for these anomalies but has so far not been investigated. We show here for the first time, using x-ray Compton scattering and a computational model, that the ground state configuration of the valence electrons in a particular nanoconfined water system, Nafion, is so different from that of bulk water that the weakly electrostatically interacting molecule model of water is clearly inapplicable. We argue that this is a generic property of nanoconfinement. The present results demonstrate that the electrons, and hence the protons as well, of nanoconfined water are in a distinctly different quantum state from that of bulk water. Biological cell function must make use of the properties of this state and cannot be expected to be described correctly by empirical models based on the weakly interacting molecules model.

More than one dynamic crossover in protein hydration water

Studies of liquid water in its supercooled region have helped us better understand the structure and behavior of water. Bulk water freezes at its homogeneous nucleation temperature (approximately 235 K), but protein hydration water avoids this crystallization because each water molecule binds to a protein. Here, we study the dynamics of the hydrogen bond (HB) network of a percolating layer of water molecules and compare the measurements of a hydrated globular protein with the results of a coarse-grained model that successfully reproduces the properties of hydration water. Using dielectric spectroscopy, we measure the temperature dependence of the relaxation time of proton charge fluctuations. These fluctuations are associated with the dynamics of the HB network of water molecules adsorbed on the protein surface. Using Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field calculations, we study the dynamics and thermodynamics of the model. Both experimental and model analyses are consistent with the interesting possibility of two dynamic crossovers, (i) at approximately 252 K and (ii) at approximately 181 K. Because the experiments agree with the model, we can relate the two crossovers to the presence at ambient pressure of two specific heat maxima. The first is caused by fluctuations in the HB formation, and the second, at a lower temperature, is due to the cooperative reordering of the HB network.

Isotope quantum effects on the water proton mean kinetic energy

A deep inelastic neutron scattering experiment, performed on D(2)O in the stable and metastable liquid phases, provides evidence for isotope quantum effects in the proton or deuteron single particle dynamics along the hydrogen bond. The deuteron mean kinetic energy extracted from the experimental data in the metastable supercooled phase (T = 276.15 K) exceeds the zero point energy and scales as sqrt[2] with that of protons in supercooled light water, at T = 269.15 K. The present data support the suggestion that even small changes in the short range environment of a deuteron or proton have a strong influence on its quantum behavior.

Quantum behavior of water protons in protein hydration shell

Quantum effects on the water proton dynamics over the surface of a hydrated protein are measured by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy and deep inelastic neutron scattering. Dielectric spectroscopy indicates a reduced energy barrier for a hydrogenated protein sample compared to a deuterated one, along with a large and temperature-dependent isotopic ratio, in good agreement with theoretical studies. Recent deep inelastic neutron scattering data have been reanalyzed, and now show that the momentum distribution of water protons reflects a characteristic delocalization at ambient temperatures. These experimental findings might have far-reaching implications for enzymatic catalysis involving proton transfer processes, as in the case of the lysozyme protein studied in this report.

Excess of proton mean kinetic energy in supercooled water

We find, by means of a deep inelastic neutron scattering experiment, a significant excess of proton mean kinetic energy E_(k) in supercooled water, compared with that measured in stable liquid and solid phases. The measured values of E_(k) at moderate degrees of supercooling do not fit the predicted linear increase with temperature observed for the water stable phases. This anomalous behavior is confirmed by the shape of the measured momentum distribution, thus supporting a likely occurrence of ground-state quantum delocalization of a proton between the O atoms of two neighboring molecules. These results strongly suggest a transition from a single-well to a double-well potential felt by the delocalized proton, with a reduced first neighbor O-O distance, in the supercooled state, as compared to ambient condition.
