Nonlocal composite spin-lattice polarons in high temperature superconductors

Fermi blockade of the strong electron-phonon interaction in modelled optimally doped high temperature superconductors

We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo method. We show that the strong electron-phonon interaction, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong electron-phonon interaction fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high temperature superconductors.

Witnessing the formation and relaxation of dressed quasi-particles in a strongly correlated electron system

The non-equilibrium approach to correlated electron systems is often based on the paradigm that different degrees of freedom interact on different timescales. In this context, photo-excitation is treated as an impulsive injection of electronic energy that is transferred to other degrees of freedom only at later times. Here, by studying the ultrafast dynamics of quasi-particles in an archetypal strongly correlated charge-transfer insulator (La2CuO(4+δ)), we show that the interaction between electrons and bosons manifests itself directly in the photo-excitation processes of a correlated material. With the aid of a general theoretical framework (Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian), we reveal that sub-gap excitation pilots the formation of itinerant quasi-particles, which are suddenly dressed by an ultrafast reaction of the bosonic field.

Quantum dynamics of the Hubbard-Holstein model in equilibrium and nonequilibrium: application to pump-probe phenomena

The spectral response and physical features of the 2D Hubbard-Holstein model are calculated both in equilibrium at zero and low chemical dopings, and after an ultrashort powerful light pulse, in undoped systems. At equilibrium and at strong charge-lattice couplings, the optical conductivity reveals a three-peak structure in agreement with experimental observations. After an ultrashort pulse and at nonzero electron-phonon interaction, phonon and spin subsystems oscillate with the phonon period T(ph)≈80 fs. The decay time of the phonon oscillations is about 150-200 fs, similar to the relaxation time of the charge system. We propose a criterion for observing these oscillations in high T(c) compounds: the time span of the pump light pulse τ(pump) has to be shorter than the phonon oscillation period T(ph).

Bipolaron in the t-J model coupled to longitudinal and transverse quantum lattice vibrations

We explore the influence of two different polarizations of quantum oxygen vibrations on the spacial symmetry of the bound magnetic bipolaron in the context of the t-J model by using exact diagonalization within a limited functional space. Linear as well as quadratic electron-phonon coupling to transverse polarization stabilize d-wave symmetry. The existence of a magnetic background is essential for the formation of a d-wave bipolaron state. With increasing linear electron-phonon coupling to longitudinal polarization the symmetry of a d-wave bipolaron state changes to a p wave. Bipolaron develops a large anisotropic effective mass.

Far-infrared absorption and the metal-to-insulator transition in hole-doped cuprates

By studying the optical conductivity of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6) and Y(0.97)Ca(0.03)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(6), we show that the metal-to-insulator transition in these hole-doped cuprates is driven by the opening of a small gap at low T in the far infrared. Its width is consistent with the observations of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in other cuprates, along the nodal line of the k space. The gap forms as the Drude term turns into a far-infrared absorption, whose peak frequency can be approximately predicted on the basis of a Mott-like transition. Another band in the midinfrared softens with doping but is less sensitive to the metal-to-insulator transition.
