Addressing chemical diversity by employing the energy landscape concept

Energy landscapes of perfect and defective solids: from structure prediction to ion conduction

The energy landscape concept is increasingly valuable in understanding and unifying the structural, thermodynamic and dynamic properties of inorganic solids. We present a range of examples which include (i) structure prediction of new bulk phases including carbon nitrides, phosphorus carbides, LiMgF3 and low-density, ultra-flexible polymorphs of B2O3, (ii) prediction of graphene and related forms of ZnO, ZnS and other compounds which crystallise in the bulk with the wurtzite structure, (iii) solid solutions, (iv) understanding grossly non-stoichiometric oxides including the superionic phases of δ-Bi2O3 and BIMEVOX and the consequences for the mechanisms of ion transport in these fast ion conductors. In general, examination of the energy landscapes of disordered materials highlights the importance of local structural environments, rather than sole consideration of the average structure.

Free-energy landscape of polymer-crystal polymorphism

Polymorphism rationalizes how processing can control the final structure of a material. The rugged free-energy landscape and exceedingly slow kinetics in the solid state have so far hampered computational investigations. We report for the first time the free-energy landscape of a polymorphic crystalline polymer, syndiotactic polystyrene. Coarse-grained metadynamics simulations allow us to efficiently sample the landscape at large. The free-energy difference between the two main polymorphs, α and β, is further investigated by quantum-chemical calculations. The results of the two methods are in line with experimental observations: they predict β as the more stable polymorph under standard conditions. Critically, the free-energy landscape suggests how the α polymorph may lead to experimentally observed kinetic traps. The combination of multiscale modeling, enhanced sampling, and quantum-chemical calculations offers an appealing strategy to uncover complex free-energy landscapes with polymorphic behavior.

Barium Sulfide under Pressure: Discovery of Metastable Polymorphs and Investigation of Electronic Properties on ab Initio Level

Barium sulfide (BaS) is an important precursor to other barium compounds with applications from ceramics and flame retardants to luminous paints and additives, and recent research shows potential technological applications in electrical and optical devices. Under normal conditions, BaS crystallizes in the NaCl type of structure, and with the increase in pressure BaS undergoes a structural phase transition to a CsCl type modification. This study presents modeling of barium sulfide under pressure with special focus on structural aspects and electronic properties. We predict metastable BaS polymorphs which have not yet been observed in the experiment or in previous calculations, and we investigated their vibrational and thermodynamical properties. Furthermore, we investigate the electronic properties of experimentally known structures as well as novel predicted modifications of BaS on ab initio level using Hartree-Fock, GGA-PBE, and the hybrid B3LYP functional. In this way, we address new possibilities of synthesizing BaS and possible band gap tuning which can have great applications in optoelectrical technologies.

Conceptual inorganic materials discovery - a road map

Synthesis of novel solids, which is a pivotal starting point in innovative materials research, is markedly impeded by the lack of predictability. A conception is presented that enables syntheses of new materials to be rationally planned. The approach is based on the atomic configuration space, and the potential energies associated to the atomic arrangements. Each minimum of the respective hyperspace of potential energy corresponds to a chemical compound capable of existence. Thus the whole realm of known and not-yet-known chemical compounds is represented in virtuo on that energy landscape. From this view it follows further that the full sets of the corresponding materials' properties are pre-determined. Within the scope of the "Energy Landscape Concept of Chemical Matter" presented, targets for synthesis are identified in a rational manner by searching the underlying potential energy landscapes for (meta)stable candidates computationally. Subsequently, the gained information are transferred to finite temperatures, which enables phase diagrams to be calculated, including metastable manifestations of matter, from first principles. The subsequent steps in materials discovery, e.g., assessing the properties and the impact of defects on the performance of the solids predicted are addressed briefly. The approach presented is complete and physically consistent; its feasibility has been proven and validated experimentally.

Sterically active electron pairs in lead sulfide? An investigation of the electronic and vibrational properties of PbS in the transition region between the rock salt and the α-GeTe-type modifications

Recently, we have investigated the energy landscape of PbS for many different pressures on the ab initio level by using Hartree-Fock and density functional theory to globally search for possible thermodynamically stable and metastable structures. The perhaps most fascinating observation was that besides the experimentally known modification exhibiting the rock salt structure a second minimum exists close-by on the landscape showing the low-temperature α-GeTe-type structure. In the present study, we investigate the possible reasons for the existence of this metastable modification; in particular we address the question, whether the α-GeTe-type modification might be stabilized (and conversely the rock salt modification destabilized) by steric effects of the non-bonding electron pair.

Uncovering molecular processes in crystal nucleation and growth by using molecular simulation

Exploring nucleation processes by molecular simulation provides a mechanistic understanding at the atomic level and also enables kinetic and thermodynamic quantities to be estimated. However, whilst the potential for modeling crystal nucleation and growth processes is immense, there are specific technical challenges to modeling. In general, rare events, such as nucleation cannot be simulated using a direct "brute force" molecular dynamics approach. The limited time and length scales that are accessible by conventional molecular dynamics simulations have inspired a number of advances to tackle problems that were considered outside the scope of molecular simulation. While general insights and features could be explored from efficient generic models, new methods paved the way to realistic crystal nucleation scenarios. The association of single ions in solvent environments, the mechanisms of motif formation, ripening reactions, and the self-organization of nanocrystals can now be investigated at the molecular level. The analysis of interactions with growth-controlling additives gives a new understanding of functionalized nanocrystals and the precipitation of composite materials.
