The structural stability of Mn3Sn Heusler compound under high pressure

Pressure engineering has attracted growing interest in the understanding of structural changes and structure-property relations of layered materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of Mn3Sn.In-situhigh-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments revealed that Mn3Sn maintained hexagonal lattice symmetry within the pressure range of ambient to 50.4 GPa. The ratio of lattice constantsc/ais almost independent of the pressure and remains constant at 0.80, indicating a stable cell shape. Density functional theory calculations revealed the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the localization ofdelectrons. The Mn3Sn has been found in flat energy bands near the Fermi level, exhibiting a large density of states (DOS) primarily contributed by thedelectrons. This large DOS near the Fermi level increases the energy barrier for a phase transition, making the transition from the hexagonal phase to the tetragonal phase challenging. Our results confirm the structural stability of Mn3Sn under high pressure, which is beneficial to the robustness of spintronic devices.

Path-Dependent Preparation of Complex Micelle Packings of a Hydrated Diblock Oligomer

Small-angle X-ray scattering analyses reveal that the hydrated diblock oligomer n-C₁₆H₂₃(OCH₂CH₂)₂₀-OH (C₁₆E₂₀ or Brij 58) forms lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) exhibiting face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), Frank-Kasper (FK) A15, and cylindrical (H_I) morphologies over the concentration range 30-65 wt % amphiphile. Heating LLCs comprising 54-59 wt % C₁₆E₂₀ drives the temperature-dependent phase transition sequence: A15 → BCC → H_I. However, rapidly quenching the resulting H_I phase from 70 to 25 °C initially forms a BCC phase that isothermally transforms into a complex, tetragonal FK σ phase comprising 30 quasispherical micelles. The metastability of this micellar σ phase is shown to depend on the sample cooling rate, thermal quench depth, and isothermal annealing temperature. We rationalize the preference for the A15 structure at 25 °C in terms of minimizing unfavorable water/hydrophobic contacts, while maximizing local particle sphericity. The symmetry breaking transition kinetics in these micellar LLCs apparently stem from the temperature-dependent activation barriers for phase nucleation and growth, which are intimately coupled to the time scales for micelle reconfiguration by amphiphile chain exchange and their spatial rearrangement. These findings highlight how thermal processing influences nucleation and growth of the self-assembled morphologies of intrinsically reconfigurable, soft spherical particles.

Stable Lithium Argon compounds under high pressure

High pressure can fundamentally alter the bonding patterns of chemical elements. Its effects include stimulating elements thought to be “inactive” to form unexpectedly stable compounds with unusual chemical and physical properties. Here, using an unbiased structure search method based on CALYPSO methodology and density functional total energy calculations, the phase stabilities and crystal structures of Li−Ar compounds are systematically investigated at high pressure up to 300 GPa. Two unexpected Li_mAr_n compounds (LiAr and Li₃Ar) are predicted to be stable above 112 GPa and 119 GPa, respectively. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure of LiAr and Li₃Ar shows that Ar in these compounds attracts electrons and thus behaves as an oxidizing agent. This is markedly different from the hitherto established chemical reactivity of Ar. Moreover, we predict that the P4/mmm phase of Li₃Ar has a superconducting transition temperature of 17.6 K at 120 GPa.
