The high-resolution absorption spectroscopy branch on the VUV beamline DESIRS at SOLEIL

FT-spectroscopy of the 12C18O rare isotopologue and deperturbation analysis of the A1Π(v = 3) level

Research on 12C18O was carried out using two complementary Fourier-transform methods: (1) vacuum-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, with an accuracy ca. 0.03 cm-1 on the DESIRS beamline (SOLEIL synchrotron) and (2) visible emission spectroscopy with an accuracy of about 0.005-0.007 cm-1 by means of the Bruker IFS 125HR spectrometer (University of Rzeszów). The maximum rotational quantum number of the energy levels involved in the observed spectral lines was Jmax = 54. An effective Hamiltonian and the term-value fitting approach were implemented for the precise analysis of the A1Π(v = 3) level in 12C18O. It was performed by means of the PGOPHER code. The data set consisted of 571 spectral lines belonging to the A1Π-X1Σ+(3, 0), B1Σ+-A1Π(0, 3), C1Σ+-A1Π(0, 3) bands and several lines involving states that perturb the A1Π(v = 3) level as well as to the previously analysed B1Σ+-X1Σ+(0, 0) and C1Σ+-X1Σ+(0, 0) transitions. A significantly extended quantum-mechanical description of the A1Π(v = 3) level in 12C18O was provided. It consists of the 5 new unimolecular interactions of the spin-orbit and rotation-electronic nature, which had not been taken into account previously in the literature. The ro-vibronic term values of the A1Π(v = 3, Jmax = 55), a'3Σ+(v = 13), D1Δ(v = 4) and I1Σ-(v = 5) levels were determined with precision improved by a factor of 10 relative to the previously known values.

Stark control of multiphoton ionization through Freeman resonances in alkyl iodides

Multiphoton ionization (MPI) of alkyl iodides (RI, R = CnH2n+1, n = 1-4) has been investigated with femtosecond laser pulses centered at 800 and 400 nm along with photoelectron imaging detection. In addition, the ultraviolet (UV)-vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) absorption spectra of gas-phase RIs have been measured in the photon energy range of 5-11 eV using the VUV Fourier transform spectrometer at the VUV DESIRS beamline of the synchrotron SOLEIL facility. The use of high-laser-field strengths in matter-radiation interaction generates highly non-linear phenomena, such as the Stark shift effect, which distorts the potential energy surfaces of molecules by varying both the energy of electronic and rovibrational states and their ionization energies. The Stark shift can then generate resonances between intermediate states and an integer number of laser photons of a given wavelength, which are commonly known as Freeman resonances. Here, we study how the molecular structure of linear and branched alkyl iodides affects the UV-VUV absorption spectrum, the MPI process, and the generation of Freeman resonances. The obtained results reveal a dominant resonance in the experiments at 800 nm, which counter-intuitively appears at the same photoelectron kinetic energy in the whole alkyl iodide series. The ionization pathways of this resonance strongly involve the 6p(2E3/2) Rydberg state with different degrees of vibrational excitation, revealing an energy compensation effect as the R-chain complexity increases.

Vacuum-Ultraviolet Absorption Spectrum of 3-Methoxyacrylonitrile

The high-resolution absorption spectrum of 3-methoxyacrylonitrile (3MAN) was measured between 5.27 and 12.59 eV using a synchrotron-based Fourier-transform spectrometer. It was related to an absolute absorption cross-section scale. Complementary calculations at the DFT-MRCI/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory document the vertical transition energies and oscillator strengths toward the first 19 states of both the E and Z geometrical isomers of 3MAN. Comparisons with the experimental absorption spectrum reveal the similarities and differences between 3MAN, a bifunctional molecule, with acrylonitrile and methylvinylether, where only one functional group is present. As in acrylonitrile, several broad valence transitions were observed up to the ionization limit. They are likely associated with the extended π-system induced by the nitrile group but might also involve σσ* transitions close to the ionization limit. As in methylvinylether, Rydberg series converging to the ionization limit are absent. This is attributed to a difference in neutral and cationic geometry due to a 60° rotation of the methyl group.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the 3sp(d) Rydberg States of Fenchone by Polarized Laser Resonance-Enhanced-Multiphoton-Ionization and Fourier Transform VUV Absorption Spectroscopy

The VUV absorption spectrum of fenchone is re-examined using synchrotron radiation Fourier transform spectrometry, revealing new vibrational structure. Picosecond laser (2+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy complements this, providing an alternative view of the 3spd Rydberg excitation region. These spectra display broadly similar appearance, with minor differences that are largely explained by referring to calculated one- and two-photon electronic excitation cross-sections. Both show good agreement with Franck-Condon simulations of the relevant vibrational structures. Parent ion REMPI ionization yields with both femtosecond and picosecond excitation laser pulses are studied as a function of laser polarization and intensity, the latter providing insight into the relative two-photon excitation and one-photon ionization rates. The experimental circular-linear dichroism observed in the parent ion yields varies strongly between the 3s and 3p Rydberg states, in good overall agreement with the calculated two-photon excitation circular-linear dichroism, while corroborating other evidence that the 3pz sub-state plays no more than a very minor role in the (2+1) REMPI spectrum. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are recorded with picosecond pulse duration (2+1) REMPI at selected intermediate vibrational excitations. The 3s intermediate state displays a very strong Δv=0 propensity on ionization, but the 3p intermediate evidences more complex vibronic dynamics, and we infer some 3p→3s internal conversion prior to ionization.

High-resolution vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectra of 2,3- and 2,5-dihydrofuran

Using a synchrotron-based Fourier-transform spectrometer, the high-resolution absorption spectra of the C₁-symmetric 2,3-dihydrofuran (23DHF) and C_2v-symmetric 2,5-dihydrofuran (25DHF) have been measured from 5.5 eV to 9.4 eV with an absolute absorption cross section scale. Oscillator strengths and vertical excitation energies of the lowest 18 states have been computed using the average of the second- and third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction polarization propagator method and the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster method at the level of singles and doubles model. These show that the bright valence transitions of ππ^*-character are embedded into Rydberg transitions, whose oscillator strengths are at least one order of magnitude lower. To account for intensity borrowing, the first broad valence transition between 5.5 eV and 6.8 eV was simulated using a nuclear ensemble, and the agreement between experiment and theory is excellent. Whereas 23DHF only exhibits one broad valence transition followed by d/f Rydberg series converging to the ionization energy, the absorption spectrum of 25DHF has four bands, attributed to a valence nπσ → π^*-transition, nπσ → 3p_x,z/3d_xz transitions, a second valence nπ → π^*-transition followed by d/f Rydberg series converging to the ionization energy, respectively. All Rydberg series converging to the ionization energy have been characterized in terms of their quantum defects.

Fourier-Transform VUV Spectroscopy of 14,15N and 12,13C

Accurate Fourier-transform spectroscopic absorption measurements of vacuum ultraviolet transitions in atomic nitrogen and carbon were performed at the Soleil synchrotron. For 14N, transitions from the 2s22p34S3/2 ground state and from the 2s22p32P and 2D metastable states were determined in the 95–124 nm range at an accuracy of 0.025cm−1. The combination of these results with data from previous precision laser experiments in the vacuum ultraviolet range reveals an overall and consistent offset of −0.04 cm−1 from values reported in the NIST database. The splittings of the 2s22p34S3/2 – 2s2p44PJ transitions are well-resolved for 14N and 15N and the isotope shifts determined. While excitation of a 2p valence electron yields very small isotope shifts, excitation of a 2s core electron results in large isotope shifts, in agreement with theoretical predictions. For carbon, six transitions from the ground 2s22p23PJ and 2s22p3s3PJ excited states at 165 nm are measured for both 12C and 13C isotopes.

The spin-forbidden vacuum-ultraviolet absorption spectrum of 14N15N

Photoabsorption spectra of ¹⁴N¹⁵N were recorded at high resolution with a vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-transform spectrometer fed by synchrotron radiation in the range of 81-100 nm. The combination of high column density (3 × 10¹⁷ cm^-2) and low temperature (98 K) allowed for the recording of weak spin-forbidden absorption bands' exciting levels of triplet character. The triplet states borrow intensity from ¹Π_u states of Rydberg and valence character while causing their predissociation. New predissociation linewidths and molecular constants are obtained for the states C³Π_u(v = 7, 8, 14, 15, 16, 21), G³Π_u(v = 0, 1, 4), and F³Π_u(v = 0). The positions and widths of these levels are shown to be well-predicted by a coupled-Schrödinger equation model with empirical parameters based on experimental data on ¹⁴N₂ and ¹⁵N₂ triplet levels.

Development of an experimental set-up for low-temperature spectroscopic studies of matrix-isolated molecules and molecular ices using synchrotron radiation

An experimental set-up for studying photophysics and photochemistry of molecules in an inert gas medium (matrix-isolated) and in the ice phase at low temperatures has been developed and commissioned at the Photophysics beamline, Indus-1 synchrotron radiation source. This end-station uses an in-house-developed closed-cycle cryostat for achieving cryo-temperatures (∼10 K). Synchrotron radiation from the Photophysics beamline is used as the source of UV-VUV photons and the system is equipped with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for characterization of the molecular species formed at low temperature. Various individual components of the end-station like closed-cycle cryostat, experimental chamber, gas mixing and deposition systems are tested to ascertain that the desired performance criteria are satisfied. The performance of the composite system after integration with the Photophysics beamline is evaluated by recording IR and UV-VUV photoabsorption spectra of sulfur dioxide at low temperatures (10 K), both in the ice phase as well as isolated in argon matrices. Results obtained are in good agreement with earlier literature, thus validating the satisfactory performance of the system. As an off-shoot of the study, the VUV absorption spectrum of matrix-isolated SO₂ in argon matrix up to 10.2 eV is reported here for the first time. This experimental end-station will provide new opportunities to study photon-induced reactions in molecules of environmental, astrochemical and industrial importance. Details of the design, development and initial experimental results obtained are presented.

Fourier-transform-spectroscopic photoabsorption cross sections and oscillator strengths for the S2 BΣu-3-XΣg-3 system

Photoabsorption cross sections and oscillator strengths for the strong, predissociating vibrational bands, v ≥ 11, in the S₂ BΣu-3-XΣg-3(v,0) system are reported. Absorption measurements were undertaken on S₂ vapor produced by a radio-frequency discharge through H₂S seeded in helium, and also in a two-temperature sulfur furnace, at temperatures of 370 K and 823 K, respectively. S₂ column densities were determined in each source by combining experimental line strengths in low-v non-predissociating B - X bands (v < 7) with calculated line f-values based on measured radiative lifetimes and calculated branching ratios. The broad-band capabilities of two vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-transform spectrometers, used with instrumental resolutions of 0.22 cm^-1 and 0.12 cm^-1, respectively, allowed for simultaneous recordings of both non-predissociating and predissociating bands, thus placing the predissociating-band cross sections on a common absolute scale. Uncertainties in the final cross section datasets are estimated to be 15% for the 370-K vapor and 10% for the 823-K vapor. The experimental cross sections are used to inform a detailed predissociation model of the B(v) levels in Paper II [Lewis et al., J. Chem. Phys. 148, 244303 (2018)]. For astrophysical and other applications, this model can be adjusted simply to provide isotopologue-specific cross sections for a range of relevant temperatures.

Evaluation of hydrogen absorption cells for observations of the planetary coronas

Newly designed Lyman-alpha absorption cells for imaging hydrogen planetary corona were characterized using an ultra high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer installed on the DESIRS (Dichroïsme Et Spectroscopie par Interaction avec le Rayonnement Synchrotron) beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL in France. The early absorption cell installed in the Japanese Mars orbiter NOZOMI launched in 1998 had not been sufficiently optimized due to its short development time. The new absorption cells are equipped with the ability to change various parameters, such as filament shape, applied power, H₂ gas pressure, and geometrical configuration. We found that the optical thickness of the new absorption cell was ∼4 times higher than the earlier one at the center wavelength of Lyman-alpha absorption, by optimizing the condition to promote thermal dissociation of H₂ molecules into two H atoms on a hot tungsten filament. The Doppler temperature of planetary coronas could be determined with an accuracy better than 100 K with the performance of the newly developed absorption cell.
