Tris-amidoximate uranyl complexes via η2 binding mode coordinated in aqueous solution shown by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory methods

Hierarchical Porous Amidoximated Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Uranium Extraction

With the rapid development of industry and technology, high-efficiency extraction of uranium from seawater is a research hotspot from the aspect of nuclear energy development. Herein, a new amidoximated metal-organic framework (UiO-66-DAMN-AO) constructed through a novel organic ligand of 2-diaminomaleonitrile-terephthalic acid (BDC-DAMN) is designed via one-step post-synthetic methods (PSM), which possess the merit of abundant multiaffinity sites, large specific surface area, and unique porous structure for efficient uranium extraction. Adopting one-step PSM can alleviate the destruction of structural stability and the reduction of the conversion rate of amidoxime groups. Meanwhile, introducing the BDC-DAMN ligand with abundant multiaffinity sites endow UiO-66-DAMN-AO with excellent adsorption ability (Qm  = 426.3 mg g-1 ) and selectivity. Interestingly, the UiO-66-DAMN-AO has both micropores and mesopores, which may be attributed to the partial etching of UiO-66-DAMN-AO during the amidoximation. The presence of mesopores improves the mass transfer rate of UiO-66-DAMN-AO and provides more exposed active sites, favoring the adsorption of uranium on UiO-66-DAMN-AO. Thus, this study provides a feasible strategy for modifying metal-organic framework (MOFs) with plentiful amidoxime groups and the promising prospect for MOF-based materials to adsorb uranium from ocean.

Controllable sites and high-capacity immobilization of uranium in Nd2Zr2O7 pyrochlore

As potential nuclear waste host matrices, two series of uranium-doped Nd2Zr2O7 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using an optimized molten salt method in an air atmosphere. Our combined X-ray diffraction, Raman and X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy studies reveal that uranium ions can precisely substitute the Nd site to form an Nd2-xUxZr2O7+δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) system and the Zr site to form an Nd2Zr2-yUyO7+δ (0 ≤ y ≤ 0.4) system without any impurity phase. With increasing U concentration, there is a phase transition from pyrochlore (Fd3m) to defect fluorite (Fm3m) structures in both series of U-doped Nd2Zr2O7. The XAFS analysis indicates that uranium exists in the form of high-valent U6+ in all samples. To balance the extra charge for substituting Nd3+ or Zr4+ by U6+, additional oxygen is introduced accompanied by a large structural distortion; however, the Nd2Zr1.6U0.4O7+δ sample with high U loading (20 mol%) still maintains a regular fluorite structure, indicating the good solubility of the Nd2Zr2O7 host for uranium. This study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first systematic study on U-incorporated Nd2Zr2O7 synthesized via the molten salt method and provides convincing evidence for the feasibility of accurately immobilizing U at specific sites.

Local Structure Investigations of Sequential Sorption of U and Fe on Polyacrylamide Hydroxamic Acid Resins

Uranium- and iron-containing waste simulated effluent has been treated sequentially with a novel resin, viz., polyacrylamide hydroxamic acid (PAAHA). The motivation is to investigate the competitive interactions with transition metals during the removal of radiologically and chemically toxic uranium. The sequential sorption results indicate that the resin is more Fe selective compared to U and it retains more iron. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, which comprise of both X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques, have been carried out on the PAAHA resin at the Fe K-edge and U L₃-edge to probe the change in the local coordination environment on sequential sorption of uranium and iron. EXAFS measurements conclude that the U-O distances and coordination are modified when the treatment sequences of U and Fe are interchanged, whereas the Fe local structure remains intact. The results obtained from EXAFS measurements have been verified by detail analysis of XANES data.

Investigation of the local structure of molten ThF4-LiF and ThF4-LiF-BeF2 mixtures by high-temperature X-ray absorption spectroscopy and molecular-dynamics simulation

The microscopic structures of ThF₄-LiF and ThF₄-LiF-BeF₂ molten salts have been systematically investigated by in situ high-temperature X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy combined with molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. The results reveal that the local structure of thorium ions was much more disordered in the molten state of the ThF₄-LiF-BeF₂ salt than that in ThF₄-LiF, implying that the Th and F ions were exchanged more frequently in the presence of Be ions. The structures of medium-range-ordered coordination shells (such as Th-F_2nd and Th-Th) have been emphasized by experimental and theoretical XAFS analysis, and they play a significant role in transport properties. Using MD simulations, the bonding properties in the molten ThF₄-LiF and ThF₄-LiF-BeF₂ mixtures were evaluated, confirming the above conclusion. This research is, to the best of our knowledge, the first systematic study on the ThF₄-LiF-BeF₂ molten salt via quantitative in situ XAFS analysis and MD simulations.

Structural and Computational Characterization of a Bridging Zwitterionic-Amidoxime Uranyl Complex

A bridging (μ₂) neutral zwitterionic amidoxime binding mode previously unobserved between amidoximes and uranyl is reported and compared to other uranyl amidoxime complexes. Density functional theory computations show the dinuclear complex exhibits a shallow potential energy surface allowing for facile inclusion of a nonbonding water molecule in the solid-state.

Detection and identification of solids, surfaces, and solutions of uranium using vibrational spectroscopy

The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of uranium speciation using vibrational spectroscopy methods including Raman and IR. Uranium is a naturally occurring, radioactive element that is utilized in the nuclear energy and national security sectors. Fundamental uranium chemistry is also an active area of investigation due to ongoing questions regarding the participation of 5f orbitals in bonding, variation in oxidation states and coordination environments, and unique chemical and physical properties. Importantly, uranium speciation affects fate and transportation in the environment, influences bioavailability and toxicity to human health, controls separation processes for nuclear waste, and impacts isotopic partitioning and geochronological dating. This review article provides a thorough discussion of the vibrational modes for U(IV), U(V), and U(VI) and applications of infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies in the identification and detection of both naturally occurring and synthetic uranium species in solid and solution states. The vibrational frequencies of the uranyl moiety, including both symmetric and asymmetric stretches are sensitive to the coordinating ligands and used to identify individual species in water, organic solvents, and ionic liquids or on the surface of materials. Additionally, vibrational spectroscopy allows for the in situ detection and real-time monitoring of chemical reactions involving uranium. Finally, techniques to enhance uranium species signals with vibrational modes are discussed to expand the application of vibrational spectroscopy to biological, environmental, inorganic, and materials scientists and engineers.
