Structural aspects of displacive transformations: what can optical microscopy contribute? Dehydration of Sm2(C2O4)3·10H2O as a case study

Hydrogen-Bonded Crystalline Molecular Machines with Ultrafast Rotation and Displacive Phase Transitions

Two new crystalline rotors 1 and 2 assembled through N-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds by using halogenated carbazole as stators and 1,4-diaza[2.2.2]bicyclooctane (DABCO) as the rotator, are described. The dynamic characterization through ¹ H T₁ relaxometry experiments indicate very low rotational activation barriers (E_a ) of 0.67 kcal mol^-1 for 1 and 0.26 kcal mol^-1 for 2, indicating that DABCO can reach a THz frequency at room temperature in the latter. These E_a values are supported by solid-state density functional theory computations. Interestingly, both supramolecular rotors show a phase transition between 298 and 250 K, revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The subtle changes in the crystalline environment of these rotors that can alter the motion of an almost barrierless DABCO are discussed here.

Robust thermoelastic microactuator based on an organic molecular crystal

Mechanically responsive molecular crystals that reversibly change shape triggered by external stimuli are invaluable for the design of actuators for soft robotics, artificial muscles and microfluidic devices. However, their strong deformations usually lead to their destruction. We report a fluorenone derivative (4-DBpFO) showing a strong shear deformation upon heating due to a structural phase transition which is reproducible after more than hundred heating/cooling cycles. Molecular dynamic simulations show that the transition occurs through a nucleation-and-growth mechanism, triggered by thermally induced rotations of the phenyl rings, leading to a rearrangement of the molecular configuration. The applicability as actuator is demonstrated by displacing a micron-sized glass bead over a large distance, delivering a kinetic energy of more than 65 pJ, corresponding to a work density of 270 J kg^-1. This material can serve as a prototype structure to direct the development of new types of robust molecular actuators.

A large anisotropic plasticity of L-leucinium hydrogen maleate preserved at cryogenic temperatures

L-Leucinium hydrogen maleate crystals are very plastic at ambient conditions. Here it is shown that this plasticity is preserved at least down to 77 K. The structural changes in the temperature range 293-100 K were followed in order to rationalize the large anisotropic plasticity in this compound. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported example of an organic compound remaining so plastic at cryogenic conditions.

Tunable Mechanical Response from a Crystal Undergoing Topochemical Dimerization: Instant Explosion at a Faster Rate and Chemical Storage of a Harvestable Explosion at a Slower Rate

Strain developed in crystals in response to stimuli causes mechanical response. Methods to tune such mechanical response is important for practical applications. Crystals of a monomer having azide and alkyne units pre-organized in a ready-to-react orientation, undergo thermal topochemical dimerization and show rate-dependent mechanical response. When the reaction rate is fast, the crystals explode violently. When the reaction rate is slow, the crystals absorb water from the surroundings contemporaneously with the reaction to form the dimer-hydrate in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) manner. Crystals of the dimer-hydrate upon dehydration also undergo explosion. Thus, at slow reaction rate, the strain gets stored in crystals by hydration and the explosion can be harvested, at will, by dehydration. Use of this rate-dependent explosion in the automatic activation of a remedial electrical circuit in case of a sudden rise in temperature has been demonstrated.

Designing shape anisotropic SmCo5 particles by chemical synthesis to reveal the morphological evolution mechanism

In this work, we describe a new protocol to synthesize SmCo₅ single crystal particles with remarkable shape anisotropy (hexagonal and rodlike), which exhibit a giant coercivity of 36.6 kOe and a high M_r/M_s value of 0.95 after an alignment. On this basis, the morphological evolution mechanism is illustrated by employing the template effect.

Anisotropic lattice softening near the structural phase transition in the thermosalient crystal 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene

The thermosalient effect (crystal jumping on heating) attracts much attention as both an intriguing academic phenomenon and in relation to its potential for the development of molecular actuators but its mechanism remains unclear. 1,2,4,5-Tetrabromobenzene (TBB) is one of the most extensively studied thermosalient compounds that has been shown previously to undergo a phase transition on heating, accompanied by crystal jumping and cracking. The difference in the crystal structures and intermolecular interaction energies of the low- and high-temperature phases is, however, too small to account for the large stress that arises over the course of the transformation. The energy is released spontaneously, and crystals jump across distances that exceed the crystal size by orders of magnitude. In the present work, the anisotropy of lattice strain is followed across the phase transition by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, focusing on the structural evolution from 273 to 343 K. A pronounced lattice softening is observed close to the transition point, with the structure becoming more rigid immediately after the phase transition. The diffraction studies are further supported by theoretical analysis of pairwise intermolecular energies and zone-centre lattice vibrations. Only three modes are found to monotonically soften up to the phase transition, with complex behaviour exhibited by the remaining lattice modes. The thermosalient effect is delayed with respect to the structural transformation itself. This can originate from the martensitic mechanism of the transformation, and the accumulation of stress associated with vibrational switching across the phase transition. The finding of this study sheds more light on the nature of the thermosalient effect in 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene and can be applicable also to other thermosalient compounds.
